Buy American - But is it really American?

Are you now messing w/. me cause I'm new. S&W makes parts that go in a Harley?!?

A lesson S&W learned from Ruger is to diversify. They use their metal working expertise and manufacturing capacity and equipment for a lot more than just firearms.

There was a magazine put out a few years ago for an (I forget which) S&W Anniversary , and on the cover were several guns , raw forgings and other machined parts , a few of which were the shift forks with the H-D logo forged in.

Of course he didn't drive the rest of the DOW down. When GM went public the DOW was at 11,000. That's about where it is now. However, GM is down 40% during the same time period.
My point being that Dow has been up & down lately and is down over 600 points in three days. Stuff happens in the market & to individual stocks. Attributing the downturn in GM stock price to Akerson is based on what exactly? Insider information? The fact that the company is finally making and selling decent cars again?
The truth is that they've been in sore need of leadership for many years now - leadership that will concentrate on getting back into the business of making automobiles, as opposed to in Roger Smith's view that GM was in the business of making profits.
What do you think of GM CEO calling for you to pay an additional $1 per gallon Federal gas tax so he can sell more of his small and fuel efficient cars? Now THAT, I have a beef with.
His small and fuel efficient cars? "According to the Detroit News: 'A government-imposed tax hike, Akerson believes, will prompt more people to buy small cars and do more good for the environment than forcing automakers to comply with higher gas-mileage standards.'" GM makes a boatload more money on Suburbans than it does on Cruzes. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that all the Japanese automakers outsell GM in that market - a market they actually ceded to the imports 20 years or so ago. I remember very well being in a meeting (as an hourly grunt) when management told us this very thing.
Us tax payers were already paying $7,500 to try to bribe people into buying the Chevy Volt. Since that hasn't worked so well, I guess we are supposed to all be punished into buying these type cars? I consider these type tactics socialist and quite relevant in a thread about buying American.
Please drop the whole socialist rant, OK? Japan, Germany, France, Italy, Korea and other auto producing nations back their car companies because they recognize the importance of a strong industry to the nation's economy. In The US it's socialist??? This is the sorriest bunch of clap-trap I've heard in years...

Pointing to other nations, especially European, socialist programs as rationale for America to follow suit is nothing new. I could not disagree more with this type of thinking, but I'll leave it at that.

Is there a "sort of like" icon here?

Cars is not the only thing that effects the economy or American workers.

Some members of GT insist on only buying products made in the USA. I think that it is funny that these same people drink foreign beer, carry Glock and Sig pistols, look at foreign made televisions, have computers that are made overseas, and wear clothes made overseas. The truth is that many foreign manufactured productd are really high quality and cheaper than "made in the USA" products. Don"t get me wrong, I like products made in america too, but it is getting harder to find things that are made in the USA. The world is not the same place that it was 50 years ago. I won't go into why this is true because you know the answer.

Not without another silly "socialist" comment though...
Just wondering: is it socialist when you apply for Social Secutity, Medicare or Medicaid? Or is it only when it comes to companies and/or programs that threaten huge "profit taking" opportunities?
This really is a side topic only tangentally related to the "buy American" theme of this thread, so I'll leave it here also if you'll drop the whole socialism rhetoric. Deal?
I also doubt I could ever convince you to buy a GM product, even if that was my goal. These attacks on one company that, through a number of various contributing factors, needed to borrow money from the government, are totally unfair. If you had a problem with their products, fine. So have I. If you think their styling sucks, well that's all a matter of taste. (But it sure did, IMO!) These cliche-filled jabs have no real value or information though, really.

P.S. - to correct a minor bit of misinformation from an earlier post by on the prowl: "GM bailout by current admin." is incorrect. GWB began the bailout program. Just FYI... ;)

I would think that it's just as *socialist* to use your Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance instead of paying cash for that triple by-pass as it is applying for SSI. I paid my SSI premiums with a cut of EVERY paycheck that I ever worked for in the last 40 years, but only had BCBS insurance for 20.

Welfare is socialism at work. Social Security is an insurance program. The fact that *they* let people that never paid into it draw from it is pathetic. Try that with Prudential, or BCBS and see how far you get...

Many doctors are now going to work for hospitals or medical corporations for a set salary rather than have to do billing, hire staff, pay malpractice insurance and such.

My internist did just that for exactly those reasons + ridiculous Medicare reimbursements.

Well, I try and do my part. The sight tools I make for Russian rifles, here in Missouri, out of aluminum from Ohio and bolts made in North Carolina, shipped in recycled mailers made in Michigan.

And the profits go to Japan.

I would rather have my 2008 Toyota Corrola, whiuch was made in Stockton, California by UAW workers. Than an "American" car made in Mexico or Korea. Some of the profits may go to Japan BUT it was American workers putting food on their tables and a roof over their heads making and assembling my car.
