Wisconsin Car Stop
Here is a car stop initiated in Wisconsin. The news video is dated May 5, 2011. You never know what is going to happen, when you pull someone over.

The guy apparently was not playing with a full deck, or not the brightest bulb etc, etc.

I think the cop(s) were lucky that he jumped out and fired, rather than letting the cop(s) approach the vehicle and then shoot at a closer distance.

Ditto, could have been ugly for someone just doing their job. Glad it turned out this way than the other. I'm thankful that this perp opted for the cheaper route for the tax-paying citizens. I personally think we need less people in prison, and this is a great way to start towards my thought. Sorry I'm not PC and "sensitive" to peoples' pity-me stories. Man-up and grow-up or suffer severe consequences. Congratulations and a big thanks to the fine officer or officers doing a days work!!!

Thank God it turned out the way it did. The Officer is safe and the perp is gone. The way it should be. Well done, Officer and when you get a chance clean that duty weapon.

Let me guess, he was a good boy who loved is mom and was just starting to turn his life around. No need for that mean old officer to shoot him down like a dog, was there?

If we could look at this person's past, only 28 years, we would see some very negative interactions with authority figures, possibly LEO's, and unfortunately, these officers were put in the position to have to kill this man because of previous events, despite where the fault for them might lie. His acts of violence were calm and deliberate, and he looked as though he had anticipated this confrontation, knowing it would happen, and as a result, these actions were premeditated from his standpoint, even though he didn't know time, or place, or the other human beings involved. He was motivated by deep seated resentment, and "sitting on ready" as the saying goes. That's what I saw. Flapjack.

Well, based on the video shortly before he got back in the pickup, I would venture to say he died with his pants down! He definitely got what he deserved, hope neither of the officers were injured (looks like it was a 2 man squad (to use a Wisconism), as the perp fired toward the right side of the car, then transitioned to the left side. It does demonstrate the folly of spray and pray shooting, as well as leaving the vehicle in gear if you think you may want to "remount."

I do not nuderstand how this could have happened. The man has a list of felony convictions that is fairly long. He spent four years in a FL prison. He had several arrests & convictions for armed burglary.
How did he get a handgun? I thought the law would have kept him from getting a gun. We need laws to protect the public so people with felony convictions cannot get guns.
And the officer that was shot by the man needing 12 weeks off work and on crutches must have provoked the guy some way.

That's Tomah, Wisconsin where Chicago meets Minneapolis & St Paul. Now you just wait for the start of deer season!
The truck is going to need more than a wax job. The shooter got his.

The reason for the stop was because the officers suspected the driver of being involved in an earlier drive-by shooting, so I'm guessing they didn't plan on just wandering up the driver to say howdy. The vid title "Routine Police Stop" in the link you provided is somewhat misleading.

I see it now. I guess they didnt have the later info from officer.com when they put that vid out? Intitial reports are always sketchy.

Interesting.
What weapons and calibers were involved?
Doesn't appear that any of the LEO's rounds were deflected by the window glass or truck body.

No idea what cal. I guess with flat glass in back window, round wasn't deflected. The steel on newer cars are not all that thick.
I feel bad for the family of the perp. One or both of his parents were probably enablers. They were probably tortured for the last 15 years by his conduct. The family now has to deal with a loss. I am grateful that the cop's families do not have to deal with a loss though.
Years ago, from what I was told by cop's that were on the scene of my incident was that the mother of my perp was a vile, nasty woman who felt her son could do no wrong, while the father asked if I was shot and if I was ok. The father was apparently mild mannered and grief stricken.

Was Commander of Criminal Investigations when I received a phone call from the mother of a really bad guy shot to death by officers. (This was a "routine" traffic stop...speed, only. Yes, I do realize there are no "routine" traffic stops.)
She inquired why the officers shot her son. I advised her that he shot an officer at point blank range, initially.
She replied: "But the officer was wearing a bullet proof vest."
The conversation did not last long after that point.
Be safe.

You often hear about the lack of training (shooting resources) a lot of agencies suffer from.
The officer(s) in this instance put rounds on target under stress. Pretty impressive.
I wonder if they were using handguns or already had a rifle out because of the nature of the stop?
Anyway, I don't see how you peace officers do it. Shoot, if somebody starts shootin' at me with a rubber band much less a gun I scream like a little girl and run!

The last thing to go through his head, other than a few of the cop's bullets, was probably "I should have put it in park".

Not being critical here but I have watched the video several times. While it does not show the two officers, it does show the idiot shooting at them. His gun always appears to be aimed high as if going for their windshield or torso hits.
The problem is I read two articles about the shooting and the officers involved. Both said one of the officers was struck in the foot. This may have been a ricochet but that would have been in a downward direction. My question is what position was the officer in that would allow him to be hit in the foot? We each learn from such videos and I try to learn as much as I can and second quess what is not shown.
I will say I admire the officers for their determination and courage in the face of fire. They remained focused on the task at hand and did the job well.

Monroe County District Attorney Dan Cary said the video shows officers were justified in firing back, fatally wounding the suspect.
"These officers performed admirably and did their duty. We should all be very proud of what they did. Although it was sad that Mr. McCloskey lost his life, these officers did what they needed to do," Cary said.
Wrong again, moosebreath. It was NOT sad that McCloskey lost his life; it was sad that he wasn't killed a lot sooner. Even the briefest review of the facts reveals that. I don't necessarily advise that a DA say publicly what I just said, but if he can't say it, he should avoid the subject. How about more sympathy for the wounded policeman and McCloskey's prior victims, and less for the piece of garbage that got taken out a bit late?

I'm the new guy, joined today, and I live 7 miles from Tomah. Officer wounded had been on the force a few years, riding with a new female partner just off her probationary period. Both fired rounds, never revealed who hit him, or maybe more like hit him the most. Smoke was from tires as pointed out, truck was stuck against pole and dead foot on gas pedal. Not only were they looking for the truck for a drive by but it was also stolen (from Ohio if I recall correctly). Local PDs all carry 40s, not sure which flavor. This is NOT normal for this area, have been here 20 years and this is only the second time the Tomah PD had a shooting, last one about 15 years ago was in a local motel, Officers went to door (on a warrant I think) and victim came out armed and pointed his weapon at the police. He was shot once and died at scene.
The Tomah PD is a good group, will help you when you need help, fair and honest; but if you do something stupid like this guy did they will shoot back, and they have a rep as good shots.
