Sons of Guns, puhleeese
Ok I was watching last nite (hey I just got my new to me K-32 and had taken it to the range with its K-22 and K-38 brothers so I was in a gun mood) and a guy brings a pristene Japanese Arisaka (sp?) rifle in that hasn't been shot in forever to be checked out and cleaned up for shooting. The head guy give one of his employees the task of getting some 6.5 ammo for the thing. They make it sound like trying to get the holy grail and come up with a whopping 12 rounds. Sportsmans guide has all you want. I don't mind a little dramatization for TV, but come on.

I bet they'd have a conniption trying to find some 6.5 Bergman rounds.
Those guys aren't gunsmiths, but I guess they appeal to certain people. Watching a talented gunsmith at work would make most people go to sleep, because it's slow work.

Well, it depends. Did they get him some currently made sporting ammunition - the availibility of which can be sporadic at times for old military calibers (there was a shortage of .30-40 Krag a few months back) - or did they hunt down some original surplus rounds?

They just dug up what they could find around the shop- likely Norma manufacture. I guess they didn't want to order any because it'd cut in on their bottom line. The point is, they gave the perception that it isn't available anywhere, for any amount of money- it's sickening.

He showed is ignorance of Jap rifles when he told his 'smith, "careful, there is no safety on these Jap rifles." They often make incorrect statements on that show.

A local gun shop failed the audition because the people didn't create enough drama. I'm glad because I'd hate to have to stop going there. The business focus there is changing and they are moving to a place with a smaller showroom and larger work, and warehouse space to reflect the change to internet sales.

It took me about 5 minutes of watching one of their early shows to decide that the show wasn't worth my time.
Reports like this thread confirm that my decision was correct....

Found it interesting the customer was so excited to only pay $150.00 to have his rifle cleaned.Wonder if the ammo was extra? BTW I have a pretty rare 6.5 with a saftey, wonder what its worth? This show is the pits.

The only thing interesting about that show was the daughter. Quit watching it quite a while back.

How?
Did you folks catch the episode where they made a shotgun gatling gun? It initially blew up a bit on them. Then when I saw that thing in action, I wanted to hide behind some concrete. I couldn't believe how they spun up those loaded mags. I kept waiting on one to leave the area. That would immediately cause the whole contraption to become un-balanced. Very ugly.
I watch it from time to time when I need a laugh. I do like the daughter. BTW, the drama on this episode was the guy that likes the daughter and wants to officially date her asked Will if he would mind. Will succintly said: "It's her or your job. You decide."

Go to co-ar15 general discussion and search Gunsmoke, might want to make some popcorn and grab a couple beers before you do it.

I watched it last night. It looks like one of the tattooed gunsmiths is attempting to hook up with the daughter. Old Will doesn't seem to happy about it.

I watched about 15 minutes of one episode, sized the crew up as tinhorns (staged or otherwise) and have never bothered with it again.

Seen enough to think it should be renamed Larry, Darrell and Darrell with firearms.

Not real impressed when the owner says you don't need a depth gage to chamber rifles.

This show cast gun owners in a bad light.
I have serious reservations on the legal aspects of the things they do on this show. The so called 'restorations' of dwat NFA firearms, if legal, would produce an non-transferable item. Not legal for ownership by a private citizen.
Who are the customers for these things? That's what will cause the sheep to scream for stronger laws.
It is only a low grade soap opera but it's going to come back and bite us in the butt.
