How to safely dispose of a broken gun?
Can't sell it at the GS, I'm a Boy Scout. It's an old Iver Johnson Sealed Eight .22, not worth putting the cash into getting it up and running. I guess I'll check with the Sheriff and see if they'll take it for destruction. It has a pretty knurled one piece walnut handgrip. I will keep that and sell/give it away.

See the other thread here in the Lounge about a gun buy back. If you can find one that doesn't specify "working" gun, you're golden. Trade it in and get a gift certificate, and the gun gets melted or chopped. Everyone wins. The buy back people can feel good, and you get what you want.

Gun parts businesses will buy it from ya. Send it to Bob's or Numrich. They'll send ya a few bucks. Problem is it might cost more to send it than it'll fetch.

The more guns they buy the bigger success they have and they can push their agenda even further. Don

Wish you were in KY. I have one of those and could use parts.
Numerich will buy broken guns. Don't know about the costs of shipping.
I'd keep it. Just as soon as you get rid of it, another will show up needing just the parts you have.

You could stick it barrel first in a bucket of wet cement, tie a rope to the grip, and have the coolest boat anchor in town!

Could it be de-milled (cut frame) and then just send the parts to Mike?
Makes more sense than turning over to the sheriff. When I was ordered to destroy a weapon while a deputy sheriff, I used to just clamp it in a vice and hit with a 4 pound hammer breaking the frame, then tossing in a trash can. No further records were kept on them past that. The Coast Guard at Base Miami Beach used to just cut the frame/receiver with an torch, and then toss in the scrap metal pile. Some good parts could be scavenged there.

Either sell it for parts or have some function critical part or cut and mount it on a plaque for a conversation piece.

Guess you guys didn't read the post on National Gun Day a few weeks ago. I told GF if he came, I'd give him a 19-4. Remember, he's an Indiana Resident. But he showed up to claim his 19=4, nickel even. Only a minor issue with it. It'd been a crime gun, and the agency it came from demilled it. Cut the poor thing, right thru the action. GF posted a picture of it.
Its now a pen holder, but the nickel is still nice... The gun shop that cut it in half was careful to first remove the pin and barrel, then the crane and cylinder. Also the sideplate, and all the internal works. I never saw the grips, but I assume they went with the internals. What it amounts to is the gunsmith harvested a lot of good parts (M19 barrels are sought). The cost of destroying the gun is small (they seem to have used a metal saw). I could probably afford to demill a bunch of guns if I got to keep the spare parts!
The OP should keep the gun. Someday it may become valuable, or you'll just decide you don't like the idea of disposing of it.
National Gun Day - no chatter here?

How old is old? If it is pre 1899, you can ship it to someone directly without need of an FFL since it is a non gun under the GCA'68.
There's a couple VA members in your area that take on project guns and orphans too.

Strip the revolver completely of it's parts. Every last pin & screw.
Sell that 'parts set' including the barrel and cylinder but less the frame. You can sell that w/o an FFL involved.
Destroy the frame if you don't want to mess around with it. Either cut it into 3 or more pieces or torch cut.
You probably won't get an awful lot for a Sealed 8, but it's better than handing it over for disposal in my opinion.
Some people make a business of selling stripped out parts sets like that. They often sell the bbls, cylinders, grips etc separately trying for better prices.
Then take the small parts like springs, pins, screws and the like and sell them as one lot for each gun.

Shadow box it with a couple other period miscellaneous pieces - if it has good wood, should make a neat display.

Thanks for the ideas, folks. I'd rather part it out to the forum for postage than trash it or send it to Numrich's.

What I do for gun disposal, is, clean assiduously ,carefully wipe off all prints, inside and out (helps to wear gloves...), grind off serial numbers, torch or bandsaw gun into small parts, distribute parts randomly in rivers, canals, ditches, etc. Thus, no "part" can be traced back to it's credibly deniable origin. This has thus far been a successful strategy....

Take it to your local gunsmith and tell him he can have it for parts.
Next time you need a little work done on a gun, he will likely remember this and may give you a break on what he charges for his work.

I stripped my RG14 down to the frame and sent the parts to Numrich, they sent me a check for $25. The frame's a paperweight now.

Careful, it's illegal to tamper with a SN. Hammering the frame is OK.
I fixed 2 AR's for one gun shop, some savvy fellas used a file on the trigger and sear thinking they could improve it's rate of fire. When they discovered they also could not stop it from firing until it was empty they traded it in to the LGS. I put those parts in the bottom of the Lake.

NCIS would find all of those parts in a one hour episode.

What do you know about anchors. You live in New Mexico.
And it don't count unless it's SALT water

You could have a Karma and have it only open to FFL holders.

I just like Iver Johnson guns. They were the Taurus of their day. Can't get no respect, and for the most part don't deserve much.
