Default John Dillinger - Public Enemy No. 1!

I thought y'all might like to see this.

I've often wondered where I got or who I inherited my "need to collect" from but I recently found out. I have been cleaning out a house where two of my aunts have lived for many years now and where many family treasures are hidden away. One aunt in particular must have saved everything she has ever touched (you should see her W.W. II scrapbook - unreal!). Here's a front page from a local newspaper I found dated Monday, July 23, 1934. I just had to get a frame and put it in !

I was looking at the other items on that front page. It certainly seems to prove the adage of "if it bleeds, it leads."

Looks like a pretty violent day in that town.

I like old newspaper stories. I've got a few myself scattered here and there.

BTW, I see they had weird news back then too.

Great old newspaper. You are fortunate to have it. I would frame it also.

Now that's a real piece of history. Definitely worth keeping and displaying. Thanks for the post!

That's really cool. I have a house to clean out, too. I've been mostly dreading it, but I know there will be literally hundreds of treasures in there. Thanks for sharing!

That is a great find! Baldeagle 1313 sure pointed out the extent of the violence on the front page, as well, quite interesting.

On a lighter note, I had a front page from a small-town newspaper for many years that I always thought hilarious. My aunt gave me a subscription to the local newspaper from the small town in Wisconsin which we moved from many years ago. In order to set themselves apart from the "big-time" paper from Milwaukee, they used several ploys (I'm pretty sure the misspelling and poor grammar were not intentional), including a "double headline." In every edition (weekly, as I recall), the paper ran a major headline in very large, bold print, and, right beneath that, in a slightly smaller, but bold, font, a second headline for another story. As you may imagine, it must have been difficult to scare up enough news to support that practice in a small town, but they always came up with something. One week, the paper had the first headline as follows: MERTON HORSE BARN BURNS. Centered immediately below it, again in bold, but a slightly smaller font, the second headline read: "BARK RIVER SCHOOL HOT LUNCH MENU CHANGED. Honestly, those were the headlines exactly as they were printed. When I received the paper, I laughed until I couldn't stand up any more. The funniest part is that the editor never noticed what they actually printed, and never thought how the two headlines could be interpreted as, well, related. I kept that paper for many years, unfortunately, it disappeared during a move. I always felt it would have been perfect to send to Johnny Carson for his bizarre headline skit, but it was long gone before he started it. In another edition, the paper was advertising for a "poofreader." Since I didn't fit the "poof" portion of the job description, I did not consider applying for the job and moving back. Ah, small town papers can be interesting.

I got a kick out of the other article title regarding two folks 'scalding to death' at the MADHOUSE.

Ah, for those politically incorrect times!

Imagine referring to a 'mental health institution' as a madhouse?

Great find!

That picture of Dillinger bears a striking resemblance to Humphrey Bogart. Or vice versa.

That is a great front page. I'm half way done reading "Public Enemies" right now (better than that movie). My dad had some newspaper, too. I took these pics a while back since I own those papers now. One was the wedding of the stuttering king from the movie "The King's Speech". Anf the World's Fair at S.F. in 1939. Here's a few with guns from the eras the papers came out.
