I'm a fan also, but I had to record it so I could watch the Cards whip the Brewers.

Wouldn't miss it. Good epp tonight. Important lesson: always be able to reassemble your weapon in moments, or don't disassemble your weapon unless you've got another ready.

Never saw an episode last year but I watched the premiere tonight since I went right by where they filmed the car wreck scene several times. Not bad but I'll have to see more before I say I'm a fan.

The DVD of Season 1 has been out for a little while; pick it up and give it a look.

Grown men talking about a zombie show - good grief! The Vikings were on at the same time. Of course, I wouldn't miss it. I had Amazon put me on the pre-release for the BluRay disc season one compendium... Zombie brains splattered in detail - yum. Great start last night.

How'd the Vikings do?

Did anyone catch the snubnose square-butt the guy in the tent did himself in with?

I don't have Tivo, so I couldn't pause for proper identification.

Anyone else?

I like the way they are expanding the "redneck" character into a more responsible, balanced person ... as opposed to his brother.

Watched it even though it conflicted with my Bears stomping the Vikings. Looks like its going to be another great season.

The "Redneck character" is Norman Reedus, who played one of the McManus brothers in "Boondock Saints" and "Boondock Saints 2-All Saint's Day". They enjoy quite a cult following, I recommend renting them. Be aware, lots of cursing and gratuitous violence, but hilarious as well.
Did they ever find the Redneck's brother, who disappeared in season one?

They found his hand... last season!

The suicide revolver last night was recovered by the redneck - later given to Laurie, the deputy's wife. Grown men watching zombie shows, indeed!

Gads, I am hooked... and badly. I like 'Man, Woman, Survive', too... glad there aren't any more 'Twin Peaks' reruns now. Naw, that needed an interpreter.

Da Bears won. Vikings should have invited Favre back...

I'm pretty sure it was an older model Colt Detective Special.

Great start to the new season. I loved the wandering herd of zombies, and the post-mortem in the woods.

I'm really starting to dislike the old fart who drives the bus. I'm glad blondie gave him a reality check.

Can't wait for next week.

I watched all the first season and I'll watch all of this one. That said, there's a voice in the back of my head that tells me I allow this show more slack than it probably deserves.

I don't mind it not being a free-for-all zombie-slaying affair. In fact, I like that they're saying it's more of a drama than a shoot-em-up. Unfortunately, if you're going to stake your zombie project on drama...you'd better have good drama. I'm not seeing it so far.

Last night's episode was a solid twenty minutes crammed into a ninety-minute block. The whole scene on the highway was great (reminded me of a bunch of old war movies where you've got a submarine waiting out a depth charge attack). But after that it went off the rails into daytime soap territory and stayed there. Aside from the redneck with the crossbow and the old RV dude there's really no one at this point I'd hate to see get eaten.

That, and commercials every five minutes.

But I'm going to keep watching anyway in hopes they can shake out some kind of decent plotline and some characters who don't think like sheltered suburbanites.

The "migrating" zombies was an interesting twist. The group has just enough members with real life skills to keep them going. It's kind of fun to watch the suburbanites try to grasp the gravity of their situation, rationalize it and adapt to it. The old guy should have let blondie off herself. I believe that the snubbie was a Colt, judging by it's shape and the hammer.

they fired the entire writing staff from season one and have started over in that dept. they just need to realize that these people are surrounded by resources and they walk along ignoring all manner of plot opportunities.

that rv breaking down has gotten so old, just get a brand new one for goodness sake! this is still early on in the disaster, but they've been doing this long enough to have developed some automatic responses to the situation. they need to pay some serious attention to what they write or this show will go under quickly! the audience for this sort of show has a degree of sophistication with the subject matter that will turn them off to foolishness quickly!

My Wife and I have been reeled in since last year, I only wish I could run and shoot a handgun as accurately as some in the movie.
My Son is a firearms instructer and asked me why the sherriff's deputy didn't choose a semi-auto instead of the Colt he carries?
I am a revolver fan and don't have a problem.

Aloha,

Sorry, but, the Wife and I don't watch it.

Her because it's not her kinda show.

Me, because I think it's pretty Stupid.

Because of the stupid things they do or don't do.

Isn't Georgia a Class III state? Full auto and supressors are legal?

As a cop, he should know that. Knowning that, I'd make for the nearest

PD armory and clean them out of suppressed ARs with all the Good stuff

I can stuff into the PD's APC and equipment van/trailer.

Upgrading vehicles as we go along. Or even busting open military bases

stock of Goodies, weapons and vehicles.

But, that's me and the Wife. Or is it to much common sense and there

wouldn't be a show??

I am into it, lots of drama but with a different slant since it is life or death with flesh eating zombies.

Way too many commercials, Thank the lord for TIVO. Record it Sunday, watch it Monday.

I was wondering how much Gerber paid the have their bag-o-knives being made to be the new silent zombie killer weapons.

Like the revolver presence on the show. Glad they all do not have Glocks.

Time to go get a new RV and some new SUV's.

Just a few thoughts, K

I saw most of it till the wife turned the channel to watch Pan Am. I was curious as to why since popping zombies in the head is the only way to kill them why .22s are not more popular? A .22 like a Marlin Mod 60 is plenty accurate to hit em in the head and out of a rifle should be powerful enough to punch through the skull. Also you could be able to carry thousands of rounds of ammo.

I think Rick Grimes is more than a little old-school. The cowboy boots, hat, revolver, and "gunfighter"-style holster. His deputy, Shane, has a Glock, black nylon gear, and combat boots, and is a bit more tacti-cool than Rick.

I am a big fan of the show, along with "Breaking Bad". Other than watching a movie or "Top Gear" on BBC America, there isn't a reason to watch tv anymore.

For the poster who mentioned "Twin Peaks" reruns, that show is coming back, only it's called "The Killing", also on AMC. Not really, but they borrowed VERY heavily from David Lynch on that show. I watched about 10 minutes of the pilot episode and decided it wasn't my thing..

Yeah the accuracy of their handgun firing is "interesting". The thing which killed me was in the first episode of season 1, Rick(The Colt carrying deputy) tells a fell deputy to make sure his safety is off.....the problem is, its a Glock! They added a little click sound! Still a great show.

I think it could go either way. I'm waiting to see.

Re: The Killing: Going on too long. Likely won't re-up when it starts again.

These long breaks make it hard to follow. Getting too many good series: Game of Thrones, True Blood (Staring to look like it's gonna be a soap opera), Boardwalk Empire, Sons of Anarchy. Nip Tuck turned into a soapie! Didn't watch the last two seasons. Should do like the British do, let a series run its course and then end it.

That wouldn't be the American Way with regard to our shows, now would it? The American Way is to squeeze every drop of profit out of a show until it becomes a mockery of itself, then run it two or three more seasons, just to make sure the corpse is cold. "Miami Vice", "Two and a Half Men", "Twin Peaks", anyone???

I laughed out loud when i read this because:
1. it's true and
2. it's ZOMBIES!

i like the show, watched all of season 1 and liked the opener last night, but it WILL become a soap opera, like every other show.....

Im a huge fan of the graphic novels the shows based on and I was blown away by season 1 and season 2s premier didnt let me down. The suicide tent guys revolver looked to me like a Colt. The character of Andrea carries a S&W 3913 Ladysmith. Saw it for a brief second last night, more highlighted in season 1

I took the season one Glock safety jibe to be making fun of the deputy for not knowing about guns, ie he paused and checked for the safety instead of knowing that there wasn't one.

The local PD armory was heavily cleaned out by the time Rick got there, 30 days or so into things, in Season One. He took what arms and ammunition remained, but it was mostly pump shotguns and deer rifles. along with boxes of Prvi Partisan ammunition.

the only thing that I didn't like;

In season 1, Rick and the Asain had to smear dead body parts all over them so that they didn't 'smell fresh', so that they could walk by the zombies.
Now in season 2, they hide under cars and the zombies don't 'smell' them??

I didn't fault this too much, as it was still early in their learning curve, as they had mostly been evading, or outright destroying the zeds up until that point. i think that the smell idea was just a theory that "seemed" to work for them.

Later they realized from more exposure, that the smell wasn't a real factor. of course i could be full of **** and it was just a writing mistake!

The whole "it's a grave yard" line when they started scavenging the cars on the road. Come on give me a break!

They blew a great opportunity with the church scenes. They should of had a zombie preacher in there in full vestments.

The little girl needs to be zombified and eat her mother.

It's a good show. The characters are not too smart. With all those vehicles to pick from, why drive broken down RV?

Graphic novels = comic books? The author, on the 30 minute 'Talking Dead' show late Sunday, thank you DVR, said he had written 89 'episodes' (comic books).

Sure beats watching shows on politics, the economy, anything on MSNBC and most of the new batch of fall offerings on the major networks although it will never be nominated for any awards or if your looking for something more sophisticated. Sarah Wayne Callies needs to fatten up a little bit though. She is looking anorexic and the blonde looks sleep deprived.

haha, not exactly, although I think the term graphic novel is thrown around a bit too liberally. Graphic novels develop their characters just as deeply as a novel, both through text and through the concept that "A picture is worth 1000 words." The Walking Dead graphic novels are much more intense than the show, and are quite a bit different plot wise. V for Vendetta is another example of a successful graphic novel.

The comics are superior to the show, especially in terms of plot and character depth. Give them a try, if you can get over your old fart mentality that they are just "comics."

I bought my kid the bound edition of the graphic novel, which was the first 80 or so issues. Once I got past the ninety buck sticker shock I really enjoyed it, though I did have to reprogram my "old fart" brain a little. Very well done.

Question

I watched it last season, and saw most of the first season 2 episode. I too often wondered why they don't trade in that old RV, and acquire the best of everything else too. Did the two LE guys collect up most all of everybody else's guns and give them edged camping tools for defense ? I think one of them said they didn't need everybody running around with guns, or something similar, but perhaps I misunderstood the situation. I didn't know they had new writers this season. If so, the whole tenor of the show may change...

What does everyone find so great about this show? I love Sci Fy, classic horror movies and the like, but this show to me is just plan boring. I mean how many Zombies do you need to see get their heads blown off. I take some Stephen King flick over this.

Apples and oranges. King is generally more psychological, good zombie movies generally are used as a precautionary tale. In Dawn of the Dead(1978), Romero was waxing about consumerism taking over our country. A lot of people think the original was about the red scare.

They also hit on our society being fragile. What happens if the bird flu went pandemic? Think about the Great Plague, it wiped out easily 1/3 of the population. What would our response to some global catastrophe?

The problem is with sucess comes parody. Look at Halloween, dozen if not hundreds, of slasher movies were made following it.

They were initially worried about the blonde blowing her brains out, Shane went along with the old man and used the training idea as an excuse. Later they handed out all the Gerber edged weapons (product placement, they even had one of the Bear Grylls models...) in order to maintain fire discipline more than anything else. They were afraid that errant shots would give away their position to a nearby zombie herd. It was plausible enough. Plus the writers likely felt that killing zombies with edged weapons was more interesting and needed a reason.

The only one who's gun was really collected was the blonde, the pizza man didn't seem to have his own, but always used a borrowed one.

Sorry for resurrecting (pun intended) this thread but there was an interesting clip on the news last night. Seems that they were shooting some scenes down in Senoia, GA today and were closing down the intersection of two roads. There is a subdivision nearby and there are only two roads in and out of it. The bridge is out on one of the roads and the other is the one being closed for the TV people. Oops. Sheriff's deputies will be there and will let people through in between takes.

Great excuse for being late for work though. "Sorry boss but the exit to my subdivision was just crawling with zombies and it took me a while to get through."

AMC needs to get some of the writers from Mad Men or Breaking Bad to work on this though. It just seems so disjointed.

I tried watching it but gave up half way in. I just don't get the whole Zombie craze...the enemy is very one dimensional...zombies lack character and depth.

I forced myself to try again and watched it last night. At least there was more of a plot trying to save the Sheriffs kid and not just Zombie bashing.

My question is this: With the survivors scattered and separated and looking for medicine and supplies why in the heck don't they all have guns. lots of guns??

One guy with a crossbow and the Sheriff has his revolver.??

They can't find more guns in cars, stores, homes etc???

Well, after seeing this thread and hearing on the news last week that the season premier got something like 9 million viewers, I decided to give it a try. Started watching the first season on Netflix the other night. Gotta say, not a bad show. Im about to watch the last episode of season one in a few here.....
