Default I have lost a gun!

At least it seems so. I put a Model 15-2 up for sale yesterday and had a member PM me asking for the serial number. So,I went to the safe and went through everything, which is no small matter, believe me. No gun. Attributing this to oversight and fatigue,I promised to look again today. Went through every rug, box, sock and sleeve one-by-one. NO GUN! Now,I realize I'm getting on up there, but I ain't in my dotage yet. I had the gun out a couple of months ago showing it to a potential buyer but he selected another gun instead. I felt certain that I put it back in the safe. Man,that really torques me off!

I have a friend that is 10 years older than me. I am 70. He lives in another state. Besides being my best friend we worked together. We call each other. He mentioned he owns a model 60. I said bill, I never knew you had one. When did you get it? He said, dont you remember? I bought it the same day and place you bought yours! I am super positive he didnt, that was 40 years ago and at the time I bought it he cussed me out and said he seen it first! We were closer than twin brothers and besides working together we did everything together every day when off duty! But I will say he always was a world class BSer!

Don't feel bad, Tom its called CRS syndrome. (Can't Remember Squat) I lost a 1915 DWM Luger that had been in the family since it was liberated in WWII. Looked high and low. 6 MONTHS later, my wife decides to rearrange furniture, and there it was behind the roll top desk. I'd set it on the desk, and for whatever reason, it fell back behind. It was in a rug, so there was no damage except to my pride. Oh, I'm only in my mid 40's.

Suggest to your wife that the furiture needs cleaning and moving.
Mine finds all kinds of "Jimmy's Stuff" when she does this.

When we moved about 10 years ago, I found 2 rifles I didn't know I owned. My favorite Case pocketknife...I have no memory whatever of ever buying it or having it given to me. Carry it daily though.

So who would keep looking after they found what they were seeking? Of course its in the last place you look because that's where you found it.

OK, we all lose guns from time to time. If you don't, its because you don't own enough guns. Another hint from an older guy who hates losing stuff is to keep an inventory of all your guns. You know all the normal stuff, serial number make and model of the gun (notice I didn't say model number, because I hate the "new fashioned" guns with numbers.) And some other notes like if its got its box, and if you've got a letter with it.

But put in one last notation. Where it was the last time you saw it! I'm serious. If you've got more than one safe, put which one! Then take at least an annual count. Just print your sheets out, take a magic marker or highlighter and when you get your grubby hands on each, mark it off.

Oh, one last thing. Don' t number them, or put the same number on a page. Got to keep alive the idea that when someone asks how many you've got, you don't know. Its none of anyone's business. And I can very honestly say I haven't a clue.

RBurg, I think you have to be a Hoosier to appreciate this logic. Sorry - leaves you out.

Good luck finding the 15, F.T. As others have said, I bet it will show up, sooner or later.

How many guns were you showing the buyer? If you didn't know him, any chance he pocketed it when you weren't looking? Are you sure you had it after the sale was completed?

Most guns don't grow legs and leave of their own accord. They usually need an accomplice to aid in their escape.

Just looking at all the possibilities.

Heck, I been looking for my keys to the suburban for three months. Don't have a clue where they're at but the trucks in the garage at night and occasionally the wife will let me use her keys but she meets me at the door with her hand out so I don't lose hers. We'll all find our stuff somewhere. Just don't quite know where that's at right now.

Heck, I lost one in my range bag. I took 6 or 7 pistols out to the range for a new shooter. They were all in socks or compartments with all kinds of gear. I must have gone thru that bag 15 times trying to find a 30-1. It was there when I got home. Whew

I feel for you. It'll show up eventually. I lost a Model 57-1 for 5 years. Turns out the guy I bought it from brought me a Presentation Case for the gun about 6 months after I bought the gun from him. I put the gun in it so I'd always know where it was.... I promptly forgot about it until I bought a new gun safe and said...huh? Why are there TWO presentation cases there?

What a GREAT thread. It made get off the computer and do a search for my keys. All through the garage, all through my coat pockets. All through my coveralls and penny jar. I found them right where my wife left them so I'd find them. I did get a bunch of cleaning and organizing done. THANKS!

I have a Chicom Tokarev pistol that a friend sold me. He had picked it up from the body of a NVA lieutenant, killed in an Arc Light strike in the Parrot's beak area. The MACV capture papeer was with it. I kept the paper out for a few years but it was getting yellow and wrinkled. so I put it away for safe keeping. It's safe all right: that was 15 years ago and no matter how hard I look for it, I haven't found it yet.

my brother hid a bond arms derringer in the garage before he headed out for basic training in 2008. Last week i was cleaning out the garage and noticed a old computer desk that was sitting there collecting dust. i decided to clean it up & bring it inside the house to use as a workbench for my enfield restoration. while cleaning out the drawers i found a little black case, and there it was. i brought it to him and he totally forgotten about it. i was hoping he'd let me have it. he didn't let me have it.

look everywhere but the place you think you lost it from, sometimes the mind has a tendancy to forget you put something just beyond where you thought it was.

When I lose something my wife always asks me "where did you have it last?" If I knew where I had it last it wouldn't be lost for cryin' out loud Gawd I hate it when she asks questions like that.
Back to the matter at hand, where you have to start worrying is when you have so many guns that you don't notice that one is missing

I recently misplaced my used 2nd generation glock 17 I later found in its pistol rug on the floor and in back of the gun closet.

I couldn't find my Model 48 for the longest, about seven years.
Found it in one of my Big Gun Safes this last summer.
I'm 63 and sometimes I forget where I put things.

I still haven't found the barrel to a Winchester 73, 32wcf. That was 20 years ago.

I believe you can still report the firearm 'lost' (NOT stolen) to a police agency and it will be entered into NCIC that way.
It does protect you in the event it ever turns up somewhere other than your possession for what ever reason.
If & when you do find it, simply recontact the agency that takes the report and they can cancel the NCIC entry.

We used to do a fair number of those entrys. Most were people that hid guns to keep them safe (while on vacation or from children) and forget about them. Then couldn't locate them later.

I couldn't find a Ruger Montado that I had recently bought new. About a week later I was in the wife's pantry; not in my normal travels thru the house. There it was sitting in plain sight on a shelf next to the baked beans! Then it all came flooding back. I had it in the living room and was on the way back to my gun room with it when the wife asked for something in the pantry. I needed two hands to find it for her and set the gun down. I delivered what she had asked for to her and then went on to the gun room. A week later when I went to the safe for the Ruger it wasn't in the safe where it belonged and the search was on.

Bobby, Didja ask your boys? I have that same issue from time to time only to find the long lost pistola (or DVD, or Book, or can of powder, or case of primers, or reloading dies, or...) in either DJ's or Ryan's gun cabinet or on their loading bench... funny thing though... I don't lose hunting jackets or shirts anymore since they turned about 15 and grew to be over 6 feet....

Come on, Lee. You can tell us that in all the years and with all the guns you've had, you haven't lost one or two. Maybe not permanently, but for long enough it worried you.

Back to the discussion. Those of you who find something in the bottom or back of your safe need to adopt a new procedure. You need to completely empty each safe at least once a year. Every last item out on the floor. Its OK to then put it back in (but don't be surprised if it doesn't all fit.)

I've told the story before about my lost M60. I got it back in the early 1970s when they were really hard to find. A very good friend (now dead) needed money fast, and he knew of my lust for his M60. So I paid up (what he'd paid for it with his police discount, $150.) It wasn't like I was a bad guy, he found the unobtainable M66 2 1/2 that everyone wanted. So I kept the M60. But in 1978 we did have a home burglary. I knew I saw it after that, but over time I started to wonder. I bought a safe in the mid 1980s, and it never made it to the safe.

Then in 1995 we bought a new house. I didn't get around to selling the old one until the next year. We'd moved out and were "cleaning" as much as we could. I had to turn over the keys in a few days and was up at the house, just walking thru with a trash bag. We'd been out over a full year by then. Standing in the master bedroom, I thought I could see something on the top closet shelf. So I took down a curtain rod and used it as a hook to go fishing. Sure enough, in an old sweat sock, there was the M60. Probably where it'd been for 17 or so years. Its missing wasn't because I didn't look, I just couldn't find it.

So I did the obvious. I had it for maybe 25 or so years, and It'd been lost for most of that time. I didn't need it, so I gave it away! I'm not all that generous, I gave it to my oldest son. He new the cop that sold it to me years before. In fact, Mike Lemon, the cop, had gone with me and the son when he was a baby for his first piece of Strawberry pie. The kid liked it. But then everyone should assume he would.

Over the last few years I've been giving a lot of guns away. Son's need them more than me.

My wife moved one of the "night stand" guns, I did not miss it for months until I made a rare trip to the range. Fess up and ask the wife. Check with your gunsmith, friends, FFL to see when anyone else saw/shot or were with you when you shot it.

I lose guns all the time! I usually have several out, either for CCW or cleaning or house duty or whatever, and when I leave for work I'll shove them under a blanket, between some magazines, put them in a drawer or on a shelf out of sight, then forget I did it. (Evil geniuses are easily distracted ) Sometimes it takes a few days before I remember where I put them, though one Model 64 disappeared for three months before I discovered it under a rifle case in a back room. I blamed the cats for that one.
