Steeler's Polamalu fined for calling his wife...
He did break the NFL rules last week when he called his wife to tell her he was okay after a head injury removed him from the game. No electronic communications for 90 minutes before to the end of a game is permitted on the sidelines. The fine? $10,000. Look at all of the cheap shots, late hits, etc that don't cost the offenders - and they fine him for calling his wife. What jerks! I know, he probably makes more than that whenever a 'Head & Shoulders' advert airs. Still - it aint right!

I think that the rule is there for a reason.
He made his choice.

Its a fine line, I think. Its a rule. These guys make so much money, the rules don't apply to them. He could have asked someone to call her and saved the 10 grand. Just another way to look at it.

Betcha Dick Butkus and Ray Nitschke and Bubba Smith and Mike Ditka and Mike Singletary, et alia, never felt the need to call their wives whilst on the field.
Be safe.

I was thinking the rule is there to prevent cheating, like calling someone on the opposing team's 'unscrupulous' staff for play calling signals. But there should be a system in place that notifies family members if the player is hurt.

Must be there for a reason. The Bunny Ranch have the same rule. But I doubt they ever had to enforce it.

Rules...we don't have no stickin' rules. We are professional ball players, the most highly trained athletes, we are the elite of all people. Fine me, big deal, I make millions. How much do you make? I'm still an important person and a revered favorite of all you who pay to watch me play. You'll still cheer and scream for me in every game. I am the best. Never forget that. Besides, rules are for the middle class to follow.

He SAYS he was callin his wife. Coulda been calling his bookie to double up on the second half.
Say what you want, but the NFL is the most successful league I know of when it comes to protecting the brand. He knew the rules-pay the fine. period.

When one works for any business or organization, that person must abide by the rules that were made as a condition of employment.
Virtually every policy in any large organization is written AFTER someone does something stoo-pid, or does something that costs the organization money.
In this case, here's a college-educated professional athlete who makes millions of dollars a year. If he doesn't take time to pay attention to his classes on the organization's rules and regulations, and thus ends up losing five figure money . . . he's a fool.

I also am assuming he knew the rules, but who knows? In my almost 20 tears of officiating football I can count on one thumb the number of coaches who really knew the rulebook. Let alone a player. The one coach? Former NFL quarterback.
There is a valid reason for the no electronic communication rule, and it isn't just a pro rule. It goes all the way down to peewee football. I've tossed coaches for cell phone use during a game.
