Blown away (by a S&W 500 Mag that is)
I shoot some reasonable recoil guns and yes I shoot some ported handguns so I guess what goes around comes around but I got mine today.
I was banging away on the last 15 yrd bench when in the open 25 yrd bench next to me a family sets up. I figure this is odd becasue there are 3 more empty 25 yrd benches so I figured they must have more coming otherwise, why snuggle up next to me.
I was not really watching when BOOOOOMMMM!!! and all I can feel was concussion. Needless to say my little 10mm was not on target right now. I glance over and this guy next to me has a 500 S&W Mag in stainless and is thumbing back another round BOOOOOMMMMM!!!!! and it happens again. I start thinking dang, I need to move but I figured that they would not shoot it that much. So I wait out his six and go back to banging away. I catch movement out of the eye and BOOOOMMMMMM!!!! the wife is there banging away with the 500 again.
GEEZZZE this thing makes some concussion with the compensator! They were shooting factory and it was impressive.
Well, I take some time while they bang away to load some mags (I had 25 with me) clean the firing pin channel of a 1911 that was a bit sticky and finally after a cease fire, they slow up enough that I can bang away a box of ammo between each session of 6 500's.
So, my lesson is I know now what my 357 Maximum does to the neighbors and I have a deep respect for the 500 Mag!

I fired my 500 once. I will fire it again when things come together like I win the Powerball lottery, I can walk on water and Loni Anderson calls me to ask for a date.
Your getting a visual on a lady shooting the 500 should make those that claim the recoil on a 1911 is too sharp feel puny.

What's the big deal? It is a shooting range after all......
BUT, if I were the party firing the 500, I would offer a friendly "heads up" to my neighbors next to me on the line before lighting it off....

Of course it is a firing range and it's going to be noisy.
However, there were other firing positions available which were not directly next to anyone else. The polite thing would have been to locate oneself at the far end of the range and let the OP know, "We're going to crank this baby off and it is LOUD."
How happy would you be if I sat down next to your position and touched off a big Weatherby in your ear without warning? I've had that happen and was less than pleased.
Nothing wrong with a little courtesy even in the macho world of firearms, IMHO.

I own and shoot a 500 w/ 8 3/8 barrel. After shooting some factory rounds I bought the makin's and handloaded some mild stuff.
I watched a guy at our range shoot at least 20 rounds w/o ear protection...maybe after the first one you don't hear the rest at all!? I saw him once in the grocery store quite a while after and he never heard me say HI!

Whenever I take my 8 3/8 500 to the range I always tell everybody what I have and I try to stay as far from them as possible. I had a couple of friends shoot mine once and standing next to it was worse than firing the thing.

I really hate being "that guy" on the range. When I need to test some rockin' loads, I try to time my strings not to interfere with other shooters, or pick a far table if I can. Unfortunately few shooters show me the same respect. Getting blasted by comped ARs and ultra compact .40s is enough to make me walk away from the line and take a break.

Perhaps his hearing is so bad that he doesn't need hearing protection instead of the other way around.

Sorry guys. It was a 5 shot. I just instinctively typed 6 when I was complaining about it.
