Default Whats with this new terminology....."my gun runs fine"?

I know that for the last 40 or 60 years the term "runs" usually refered to
a motorized vehicle, boat, or plane. Or it can pertain to an animal in a race.
Now I see posts that talk about a gun being fired as "running".

Is this supposed to be like....really cool.. or what?

I've seen the term used most often in regard to full auto guns. When they "run" they might sound like a loud engine running.

Just means it shoots awe-rite.

Like the fellow who asked in a thread if I liked the images. I said, "You mean them pitchers?"

Take a look any video showing a GE Mini-Gun being fired at night for a whole other perspective on a gun "running" --- I think you can find some footage from the Big Sandy Shoot with a Google search.

A gun running is not be confused with the inept, illegal, unadmitted, gun running, as conducted by AG Eric Holder's Justice Department...

It's like "Have a good day!" Everyone says it, aren't sure what it really means and nobody really gives a hoot anyway. My watch runs fine...I don't always run fine and my dog runs much too fine.

It's a machine, it either "runs" or it don't.

Recently I've heard the slide on a 1911 referred to as the "upper".

I try to be tolerant about these things but that one just drove me nuts.

Maybe these terms are regional and I'm late hearing them.

I've been instructing all disiplines of firearms for almost 30 years and this term has not been used except to describe full autos until recently.
I now see people posting things like, "Is anyone running a certain site on their gun?" Or, does your gun "run with oil or dry"

And now all my firearms are machines and they "run". Interesting.

If the weather is nice tomorrow, I may "run" my deer rifles and check the zeros. Do we still say zeros?

Actually, I think this is more generational than regional.

It may be regional and/or generational, but to quote the dictionary definition of "runs"
"A continuous period of operation, especially of a machine or factory."

I think it is the proper use of the word....although, everyone may not use it...

Tacticool buzzword nonsense. "Run" used in this way actually really annoys me, but I try to bite my tongue so I don't come off sounding like a jerk on the forum. Well, more than usual anyway.

Pretentious lingo.

I hate asking somebody what kind of optic they have on their AR, only to have the guy say...."Oh, I run an Aimpoint Comp4" or similar BS. It's a pet peeve.

Runs. You know, like "runs like a sewing machine".

It's the un-politicaly correct word for "operates correctly".

So using the new lingo, when do we start saying things like "my gun needs a tune up" or "my gun needs an oil change"? Do we need to start calling gunsmiths mechanics?

Well, I guess when we allowed the manufacturers sell us plastic guns, tactical gear, light rails and all the stuff you can install on them...Well we need to talk the jargon that fits.

For me, I will just keep putting one in, skip one and load four.

Hmmm..I've been thinking about it...and earliest I remember using the term was in the 1980's in the National Guard..

If it's running..means your gun's working...if it ain't running..it ain't working...really quite a simple concept

Guns that 'run'(or not) would include anything self-feeding...from a .25 auto pistol..to a 20mm aircraft cannon or bigger...

So just suppose...my 10/22 stops running...er..ah..I mean stops working. I fix it..what should I say?

I have been hearing that for years in USPSA and IDPA competition circles. Nothing new. I use the phrase when my guns are operating as they should. If you tune guns such as a 1911 it makes good sense to me. If you were a recent competitor say in the last 10 years or so you most likely would hear it often.

I noticed it with trucks. Guys where I live call a pickup truck a "rig" and they all talk about how their ARs "run".
I remind them that my TRUCK is the thing that RUNS fine and my RIG is the leather stuff that my handgun and reloads ride in.

Hi Dog doc,
I'd say it and some of the others mentioned here have been used in IPSC/USPSA circles for the last thirty years.
I can't imagine anyone being offended or confused by it.
I go along with SheriffOconee and think the circumstance fits the description.
Thanks
Mike

I try not to be a curmudgeon, but I think its funny when somebody says "I'm running Hydra-Shoks in my 1911."

I also think you "press" an elevator button, not a trigger. Press is a motion away from you, so unless you have your gun turned around and its pointed toward your face, you're pulling the trigger.

The old "booger hook/bang switch" thing is played out.

I also don't "present" my gun from the holster. If I present a gun, it is a present (as in gift).

But I don't really mind - I'm not the word police. I'd still rather talk guns than anything else, even if the newer terminology seems kind of silly.

Well I tried not to get into this one...But, i jest can't help myself.

See the man and gun running from the convenience store,
Johnny and his gun is running and robbing,

I call out to Johnny to stop his gun running,
Johnny does stop running with his gun,

Jest long enough to shoot at me, I can see his gun is running fine,
I send a 230 grain running along to catch up with Johnny's running & gunning',

Now Johnny has a sore hip from all his gun running fun,

Johnny does not like his green ham & eggs.

Su Amigo,
Dave

With all the "bench racing" that goes on in the gun world these days from general "tactics" to the goofy hypothetical scenarios that you'd "better have" thought over before you buy a gun, throwing in car lingo was only a matter of time...."Race gun" anyone? I always thought a "race gun" was a fake pearl-handled Raven or an old Springfield 45-70 with tacks driven into the stock in a Native American pattern. Some gun rag writer probably came up with the concept of "running" because he didn't have anything original to say.

I can't stand "reach out to" instead of just "call". They use it at my wife's place of employment all the time as in: "Reach out to Bob Smith and find out who's attending the meeting." First time I heard that was on "NYPD Blue". Stupid expression when you can use the word "call" instead. I guess now that we have communications options like email, the person to do the "reaching out" can decide whether to call or email or text...it's still a stupid expression...

the world just keeps on changing

Quote:
"The word 'running' in 'running water' or 'running car' is still a verb, the water is 'running', the car is 'running'. The activity called 'running' would be an example of metonymy, where one word that relates to the concept is used to represent the concept as a whole, but in terms of whther it is a verb, adjective or noun, it is a verb acting as a noun.
Depending on its use it can be a noun, an adjective, a verb, or an adverb. It's a magical word that can be 4 out of the 8 parts of speech."

English degree student...

Next edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (expected in 2037)

"Mr. Gilliver has finally calculated that there are for the verb-form alone of “run” no fewer than 645 meanings. A record."

When I first got into NFA items back in the 80's, I only heard that term in reference to FA guns, as others have mentioned. Especially in advertisements for the MGs. "Runs good", as in you can run a belt through this gun without issues, lol. Now, I hear it at the range when some guy is shooting his tricked out AR at 25 yards off the bench....

Whatever, I just try to ignore them. Or bring out something that actually does "run good" - the way I learned it!

Simply put it is the use of improper nomenclature.

Personally I think it is just another part of our younger generation always wanting to change what dad said, or did, or used. And honestly have no respect for the English language as well.

Lots of words are either being made up, or simply used wrongly.

For example. They call a rifle a "stick". What a terrible thing to cal a nice rifle.

Or they say caliber when they are referring to a cartridge.

Or they say pistol when they are referring to a revolver.

Just add the name "Tactical" or "Special Ops." and you can increase the price 100%. And they will pay it!!

IMO it is just a complete lack of respect. And another sign of our declining and decaying society. Just my opinion. Tom.

I have a couple others.

A shotgun is not a "shotty".

Firearms are not "platforms".

Mini-rant over, thank you for your time.

It's a machine with a defined process. It "runs" just means that it completes the mechanical process without any problems or issues.

Didn't they have "pistoleros" long before they had auto-loaders?

pistol Look up pistol at Dictionary.com
"small hand-held firearm," c.1570, from M.Fr. pistole "short firearm" (1566), of uncertain origin, sometimes said to be from Ger. Pistole, from Czech pis'tala "firearm," lit. "tube, pipe," from pisteti "to whistle," of imitative origin, related to Rus. pischal "shepherd's pipe." But earlier form pistolet (1550) is from M.Fr. pistolet "a small firearm," also "a small dagger," which may be the literal sense; though some connect this word with It. pistolese, in reference to Pistoia, town in Tuscany noted for gunsmithing. Pistol-whip is first recorded 1942.

An article was written for American Rifleman this year about how to clean guns and keep them running smoothly. Revolvers and semi-autos were also described as machines. Among other things, the author has a degree in technical communications and is an NRA Instructor.

In a world where brother has become bro and then bra, I think there are bigger fish to fry.

Yeah, it's a good thing nobody mentioned the "clip" versus "magazine" arguement.

Apparently if you're someone's best friend, you're their "real n-word". If you're just a regular friend, you're merely "cool". Note how this Scottish gentleman was questioned by his friend to determine their level of friendship:

Quote:
McDuffie testified that hours before the shooting, Clark texted him while at the club in Hamtramck, asking him: "Are you my real n----- or are we just cool?" Clark then wrote that he believed Hicks was the one who set Clark up to be robbed when he was buying a car and carrying a lot of cash.

The gun is the primary "tool" you are using for your competition goals. Just as a race driver has his car. A competitor would remark that his primary tool is "running" fine it is operating smoothly with no malfunctions.
