Thumbs up Trying out a new device

Hello, I have been a member of this forum for quite a while and I have always wanted to respond to people's comments and opinions. However I can't type very well and it has always limited me to typing short notes and not being able to say exactly what I wanted to say because I got so tired hunting and pecking. So I have installed on my computer a device called Dragon that allows me to type as I speak. You probably have seen this advertised on TV. I'm using this Dragon device now and it has allowed me to put all this down on this thread in a matter of 30 seconds. I'm just now trying this out to see if this work and it looks like it's working well. Now I will post this and go back to the lounge area and see if this is on there as I had hoped. Thank you I'll be seeing you later, Jim

Voice-recognition has really gotten much better; none of us will be typing in 15 years. I had an early version of Dragon back in the mid-'90s, and it was pretty much a giant PITA.

Default Dragon

Yes I just got this installed on my computer this morning and this is the first time of trying it out, so far so good and for a guy like me that doesn't know much about computers and technology it seems easy to use at this point I'm going to keep playing around with it but so far it makes things a lot easier than having to type it all out. Now if I can just learn to post pictures that will be another step for me, Jim

I bought that program for my wife a year or two ago. Her computer crashed and she lost the program. She never really played with it enough to get proficent. A week ago I asked her about it, (didnt know she had lost it). She dug out the box, I called the help line and as usual, got someone on the other side of the planet. The woman said she was sending a E-mail with the code or whatever. As usual, never did get the E-mail. Guess I have to go through the process again.

Yikes! I wouldn't last a week here, if just blurting out comments was enough to post them ... at least the process of manually typing in text slows down the process, providing some time for reconsideration. Doe this Dragon software erase what you've spoken if you repeat "backspace" "backspace" "backspace" ?

I learned touch typing in the days of manual typewriters. So these little computer keyboards are no big deal. However, a while back I sustained serious burns in a gas fire. It was a long time before I could use my left-hand, etc. Dragon would have been a very welcome program for me when I was trying to use the keyboard. I can easily see how this will be very popular and very helpful to many people.

Misty, that was cold. Probably appropriate though.

What I see so far is really great. If it isn't a pain to use sounds like you have what you need! I learned typing in high school, and probably has saved me hours and hours over the years. On a manual typewriter doing greater than 35 wpm with less than 6 errors was needed to pass. I think I actually type better now than I did in 1959.

Looks to me like it works great. Glad it works for you and as someone else said, we probably wont need to type manually in the near future.

I am very interested! Which model did you get? I checked out their website and there are many choices.

Hummmmmm?
I do like to think thru and edit my responses---aside from the speed angle, I like typing--as slow as I type it helps me compose better.
Heck-fire---I don't have much to say anyway.
The reason folks in the South speak slowly and with a drawl is because of culture---there were not a lot of folks nearby in the early days and when someone wandered by they didn't have much to say in the way of news and such and they wanted the conversations to last as long as possible.
See--my post is a good examle. I have typed out at least two paragraphs, said nothing, given no information but have had a good conversation, if, with no one else, me.
Blessings

I've been a touch typist for almost 50 yrs and just can't get used to Dragon.

Touch typists are taught not to look at the keys, of course, so unless I'm re-typing something, I look at the words on the screen as I type them.

As a result, I get extremely frustrated speaking into the dragon mike and waiting for words to catch up on the screen in clumps. There is a definite time lag (perfectly understandable) of few seconds while the program is converting voice into text. That delay infuriates me because I'm watching the screen waiting for it.

I've tried twice now, and just can't adjust to the time lag.

For someone without my problem, it's probably a Godsend.

The idiot woman on the ONStar in my wife's vehicle can't understand a thing either of us says. It is really frustrating when trying to give her a name or telephone number. "Pardon?"
