Default Did You Used To Watch "Northern Exposure" On TV?

My late parents loved this show in the 90's. I finally watched the shows my dad taped and love the characters. I thought about it for quite some time and bought the entire box set and am watching them in order. The town DJ, philisopher, and "minister" Chris is my favorite TV character of all time. Adam Arkin as "Adam" is great, too. The show is a little "new agey" but not political. It's just a crazy weird little show like no other.

I used to watch Janeane Turner. I hear there was something going on about Alaska or something, but that distracted from my watching Janeane Turner...

Northern Exposure is my all time favorite TV series, although it got a little off track toward the end. What I particularly like was the way they dealt with serious and important issues in such subtle and and amusing ways. My favorite example was the theoretical physicist who dropped out and became a magician. He wanted to get into something more concrete and believable.

Great show. Great characters. Great actors. Great writing.
Funny, I kinda had the feeling that the Jeanine Turner character
was kinda "liberal" and look at her now, today, in real life.

There, actually, were a lot of quasi-"famous" actors in that cast.

Great show, and we have the DVD set as well. Nifty packaging in the little down jackets, eh?

One of my favorite episodes is when they launch a deceased community member with a trebuchet, per his dying wish!

I saw a couple whith a new doctor and his wife in it and felt the show was losing something around that period. I am going to cheat and find the episode where the northern lights makes people have each other's dreams. One of the gay guys has another guys dreams and finds out he has a fetish for high heeled shoes. My second favorite episode.

My favorite from Season 1 was the episode where Chris's black half-brother shows up on a Harley. "Aurora Borealis" was the name. The dream sequence where Chris and Bernard end up in a truck, driven by Carl Jung, is awesome.

One of my all time favorite TV series.

Great characters and a whimsical touch.

Missed it when it ended.

This is my favorite episode, too. Because of Chris' brother part and it introduced Adam as a gormet chef Bigfoot. But the whole Chris/Bernard storyline with that dream is the best TV I ever watched. I basically bought the box set because of this episode.

In the US, Northern Exposure is not currently airing. The Hallmark Channel owns the syndication rights. Contact Hallmark to show your support online or email them [email protected].
In Canada, Viewers can find Northern Exposure up to three times a day (!) on the digital cable channel Country Canada.

Yep, one of my favorite show at the time. I liked the episode where the pontificating DJ was hurling objects with a trebuchet. Ended up hurling a grand piano.

Definitely in my top 5 all time favorites.

I liked the way the most absurd situations or personal quirks were just kind of accepted as part of everyday life.

Could have done without the New York doctor. Ugh. THE most annoying character on a TV show.

Yup, quirky little town where all the characters are kinda off plumb but don't realize it, and the new big-city guy is the only one who is rational and normal.

Wait, wasn't that Green Acres?

I had given up on watching TV by the time that show came around.
But a couple of years ago I bought a box of books, VHS tapes, and DVDs at an auction. One of the DVD sets was the second season of Northern Exposure.
I`ve got to admit that for modern TV, it`s not too bad. Liked it well enough that when I ran across the 1st season DVDs at Walmart I bought them as well.
Like I said, for modern tv, it`s not bad. At least it is funny. Most of the things that are supposed to be comedies today are not even remotely funny.
It`s kind of like a modern "Green Acres". Except that the Dr. isn`t bright enough to want to be where he is.

Wouldn't miss it!, Great show.

John Corbett (Chris) was just on the new mystery movie series on TV.
Homicide Detective in Ricochet.

I liked the show, and J Turner of course.

But my other favorite character was the retired astronaut.

But I like him in what ever show he is in.

I really liked Northern Exposure and so did my now departed dad.

The show had characters with real character which kept things interesting.

Another plus to NE- stupid people didn't watch the show because they couldn't follow it. One less topic for the office moron to 'engage' you in conversation.

It was one of my only favorite shows. Been thinking of it lately.

Not long after it ended, there was a really quirky show centered in Nevada somehow tied in to a supposed real-life game show that didn't ever quite appear.....Pahrump Nv was involved, and it lasted maybe 6-8 episodes.

Who remembers "Cop Rock"?

I found and flaunted proudly my 'Northern Exposer' t-shirt.

An excellent show. My favorite started with a French tricolor floating downstream. Who knew?
The New York doctor was needed to offset and contrast the actions of these down to earth normal people and their normal daily lives.

I always enjoyed watching it. They filmed the outdoor scenes in Roslyn, just outside Cle Elum. Some of the scenes were filmed at a friend of mines place near Lake Cle Elum. The cast and crew left a good reputation behind with the locals, none of them thought they were too good to be talked to by folks in the area. The Chris character (can't remember his real name) is still around here some. I used to like recognizing the places they shot.

Had its moments. I recall it was shot in Oregon?

It's Janine Turner, BTW. She's a Republican, also BTW. Seems the best looking female celebrities are conservative.

Lost me when Chris threw his Harley off a cliff to make a chick happy.

Also lost me when characters started changing. Maggie started out as a high school grad and suddenly, I imagine to placate feminists complaining about the male domination, she is said to have a masters degree.

Smack dab in the middle of Washington. And I got tired of it by the third season. It kind of lost it's momentum by then.

I watched it fairly regularly at the time. I mostly liked the scenery and settings, probably because I'd like to live up north in a small country town ... although some of the philosophical rantings were a little over the top, or too avant garde for me.

When the reruns came to our cable network a couple of years ago, I was a little excited, but when I tried to watch a couple of them, I wondered how in the heck I had liked it so much before. I guess that ship sailed for me, but good thread, I had forgotten about most of the characters until you all mentioned them.

Janine Turner, big thumbs up, especially after she let her hair grow out.

Some of you bring up episodes I remember most. Saxon, I was at my parents house when that episode was on when he threw his Harley off the cliff. That guy would never do that. He did it because he accidently killed his "girlfreinds" bird or something. This character Chris is too fate, kharma, and destiny oriented to do something so contrived as dumping his motorcycle like that. And they had such a positive outlook on the show about the inevitability of death and the way they dealt with it that I just didn't buy that bike thing. Hope I made sense there.
Besides Janine turner being a conservative radio host somewhere, I read somewhere that John Corbett (Chris) is a born again Christian and his girlfreind is Bo Derek. Janine Turner also mentioned praying to God a lot in an interview so maybe she became a christian, too.

It was filmed in Roslyn, Washington-about 6-8 miles west of Cle Elum. The bar is there and draws a lot of tourist (aka "westies") traffic, especially weekend bikers. Serves a GREAT burger. A couple of good local beers (Roslyn and Brookside). Roslyn was a coal mining town. had a couple of famous cave-ins and the cemetery was/is real interesting to wander through. Area has lots of elk and wild turkeys.

Corbett is also a musician and isn't half bad. I'm not much on mainstream country, but his first country album is pretty good.

Thanks for bringing this up, Wyatt. Now I have to go out and buy the box set. I watched almost every episode when it was on, but that's been a while. As I remember, it was a great show. I'm pretty sure most of it would be new to me now.

If'n I remember correctly...This may have been the small town that inspired the setting of 'Cicely' for the show.

Anyhows this thread needs pictures!

Is that Maggie leaving the store there?

Amen! Someone finally said it. Loved the show, but hated the whiney Dr.

Didn't care for the Adam character either...But a great, quirky show overall.

Maggie was snake bit - her boyfriends died in weird ways - hit by returning satelite parts! Great show... but I am enamored by Alaskan shows.Neat seeing 'Bullwinkle' stroll through town at the lead-in. A current Alaskan show - Jim Teto and his cute gals - what an Alaskan family business - Air Alaska! Several years ago, a short run TV show - 'Men in Trees' - was a no-miss for my wife and I - quirky characters. Ann Heche was another displaced NY-er in Alaska on that show. I always liked her...

One of my favorite shows from 'up north' was the CBC/Alliance production 'North of 60'. It was Canada's top show - and still couldn't get funding. When it died, they came out with a few movies. I don't believe either are available in DVD. The native actress who played the local mountie later became a parliament member. It was carried on DIRECTV years ago on the Trio channel, which had other interesting fare.It highlighted native problems - from sniffing gasoline to selling illegal booze. Lots of native American actors & actresses, too. Low budget, on one episode, their USAF pilots flew a UH1D with the Canadian maple leaf barely visible under the US Star - and called each other 'leftenant'. Still, I looked forward to that show - filmed in snowy BC, Canada.

Gotta find that box set for NE...

I really enjoyed it.

I remember one episode where Chris and the bar owner guy took the doctor bird hunting--the doc wings a grouse and next scene is them wheeling the bird into the clinic on a stretcher. He tries unsuccessfully to save it.

At the end of the show they are all at a big dinner and the doc asks what ever happened to the bird. Everybody gets quiet and Chris says, "Well, you're eating it..."

The doc looks down, shrugs, says "Pretty Good!" and digs back in.
