Default US drone down in Iran

U.S. sureveillance drone down in Iran. This has been in the news for a while now, aparently it landed without tearing apart. It is "packed with super secret technology". You would think they would have had some sort of self destruct mechanism on board. I'm thinking the Iranians will be able to do some serious barganing with our enemies on this one.

Oh come on, even kids cartoons have the 'little red button' now why in the heck didn't we install this on top secret technology?

That sucks. But every country has it's "secret agencies" and know how to get certain information... so we should never(!) underestimate others!

Not a problem. Our friends the Israelis will be going over there pretty soon on a mission of their own, we'll just ask them to either pick it up for us, or else blow it to smithereens ....

Maybe it's all part of a super-secret deception plan to mess with their minds and make them think...um...something else of some sort that will make them give up whatever it is they're doing that we don't like and...

Hell, nobody could be that stupid as to "lose" the damn thing. COULD THEY?

I don't think I really want to know...

Could it be intentional? Maybe there's a surprise inside for our Iranian friends.

There was a big article in one of the international news sites a couple of days ago. The article said that the U.S. did not loose the drone, it was HACKED . The Iranians took control by hacking the electronic commands. This is going to be interesting. David

Sounds like a job for another drone.

Either that or send in Obi Wan Kenobi. He can do that arm wave thing and tell them, "This is not the drone you are looking for...."

I agree. An exterior operator had to have taken control and landed the thing. I have no reason to believe that Iranian techies are not smart enough to do this by themselves, but given the interest of the Russians and the Chinese in interfering with the US military command and control structure, you have to wonder if they had a hand in it.

If we can believe what sources are saying, this was a CIA bird rather than one run by the military. I wonder what we could conclude from that.

I think it would be a great time to try out one of those new bunker buster bombs delivered by a stelth unmanned drone and pretend it never happened.

What explosion? Maybe one of your techs dropped a screwdriver in the unobtanium reservoir and it had a chemical reaction or something.

But have no worries, fearless leader will fix this too. Yeah right.

If we are flying spy planes of any type over Iran - a sovereign nation - then they'd actually have every right to bring down any such aircraft via any means necessary. The same as we'd want the Air Force to hack, shoot down, or otherwise force down Iranian spy craft flying over America.

Howdy,
I don't know but what I read. I saw that if these things develop a problem that they land themselves. If so, not a very well thought out idea.
I would entomb it in a mile and a half square of molten glass and call it secured.
I guess there is someone who would make a poorer choice for president ,me.
Thanks
Mike

Actually, if they develop a problem, such as the loss of a command/data link, they are programmed to return to the launch base. The drone displayed by the Iranian media has damage consistent with a wheels up landing, not a hard crash as would occur with a loss of control or thrust. Could Iran have jammed the command link, it's possible, but it could also have been a number of other reasons. The real concern is the selling of the technology to other countries (Russia and China) and the possibility of reverse engineering.

I'm am just a simple fellow that could not begin to comprehend the intecracies (sp?) of a flying gizmo like the one involved. One would think though that "Murphy's Law applies" would be the first line in CAPS on the blackboard when the genius's design this junk.

there should be a destruct button. after all there was one that could be used on the space shuttle if it started going somewhere other than the normal launch path

Nuke 'em huh? You guys need to read Hiroshima, it's in the military history section of most bookstores. Very eye-opening. If you've got netflix, look up Trinity and Beyond. Film of sailors carrying dead animals off nuked ships with nothing to protect them from the radiation is scary stuff to me.

True enough. But don't think for a minute Iran's nuclear program is dedicated to baking cookie snacks for their Camels. They intend to use that tech to bake our cookies. So who's on first?

Those people are crazy. We do need to keep any weaponized material out of their hands. However, capturing a drone shouldn't cause irrational reaction. We lost a U2 to Russia in the late 50's early 60's, and came up with the Blackbird. This gives military industry a reason to expand technology, create new jobs, and give the bad guys a winged middle finger.

Iran has had a string of bad luck with their nuclear program. Computer viruses, explosions at various nuclear and missile facilities, key scientists driving exploding cars...

Not hard to imagine when the component parts and labor, just like your commercial aircraft, are provided by the lowest bidder, maybe an Indian, Afghan or Pakastani firm.

That drone is probably on its way to China already, the reverse engineering capital of the world. Joe

Personally, I wouldn't worry about reverse engineering. Russia doesn't have the equipment. China does but to reverse engineer down to chip level, it would be easier to start from scratch. Chip manufacturers will normally print specs on their product with low level commands (instructions). A programmer (embedded) will write code then compile it to machine code and 'burn' or write it on the chip. Once the code is compiled, its very very hard to make sense of it. If someone wants to steal the code, they would have to get access to the original code. What they do is write their own code which 'emulates' the original code.

Its the very similar process of 'upgrading' firmware on any device. Its much easier to write your own code and design your own device then to try to write firmware for someone else's device. It is done sometimes, vehicle chips is one example but it usually calls for chip replacement.

What would alarm me is if the drone was stealth but it wasn't. The Chinese could always build their own drone but I guess they are not willing to put the funds into it.

They have already been asked, and refused. Oh, well, we should have planned for something like this. Like I said earlier, why don't we have self-destruct devices in all of our sensitive equipment?

Response should be, Iran, give us our drone back NOW, or we bomb your oil refineries. You have 30 minutes".

But since we have lost a backbone, we will just accept that the Chineese will end up with it.

Absolutely. I'm sure we would do whatever it took.
If you fly in the other guy's air, be prepared for hostility. That's the nature of the game.

Why? We sent an aircraft over another country's airspace. Would we send back a spy plane captured over U. S. airspace? Of course not. This is an instance where Iran should be laughing their butts off over us. Us bombing their refineries? You going to join up and fight in the upcoming war you would have us in?

Probably not. Our govt. screwed up here.

IMO the very concept of :
A.) The gov't. asking for it back, and
B.) Actually thinking that their GIVING it back is a possibility,
is beyond absurd.

Back in WWII, if a V1 hit the ground in England but didn't explode and the german govt. asked the british to give it back, is it a big stretch to predict the outcome?

Is anyone else reminded of the (albeit remote) parallels to the U2 crashing in Russia back in the early '60's?
In that instance, Khruschev played Eisenhower like a two-dollar fiddle. I'm very curious to see how this one plays out.

I don't think anybody expects Iran to return it. I would hope the request would be so we can say "Well, I tried asking nicely", before the next step, which in a perfect world would make them regret not returning it upon request.

It appears that they now have figured out a way to override our controls, and control it themselves. If that's the case, and it is entirely possible, we should test the theory by loading one up with enough explosive to level a large city, and fly it along the border. If they get control, and fly it to their territory, then everyone will have a blast with the results. The more killed, the better.
