Russian Navy takes on Somalian pirates
Prediction: Russian ships will no longer be 'bothered' by the Somalian pirates. Watch the video.
RUSSIAN NAVY CAPTURES SOMALI PIRATES
How about that - The Russians captured the Pirates, tied them up, put them on their boats, set explosives on them all - puff no more Pirates!
This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. This is after the Euro Union Navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties.
All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat". All conversations between the commandos are in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves.
The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives and then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it.
The commandos sank the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hung.
I would think from now on, Russian ships will not be targets for Somali pirates.

I applaud the Russians for doing what needed to be done. There's only one place for pirates, the bottom of the sea.

What! They blew them up! I don't believe it - how terrible does it get!!
The Pirates fine - but all those guns blown to smithereens. . .
How callous.

We turned some pirates loose a while back, and then called the Russians and gave them a location. I cannot confirm the destruction of the pirate vessel, but I will tell you there was a distinct pillar of smoke in that direction.

A brilliant piece of propaganda. I see no definitive evidence that the pirates were on board when the ship was blown up. I would be fine with it if they were, but I don't see evidence of it in the video. It is implied that it happened that way. Even though I don't see the evidence I do believe however that the Russians would kill the pirates and rightfully so.
Our gutless government should let our forces kill pirates on the spot. That pirates are allowed to operate is ridiculous. I can not believe that the modern navies of the world can not stop this. We should allow our Navy Seals to use the waters off Somolia as a live fire training area.
My $.02 worth.
Merry Christmas

Did I see a Tokarev amongst the captured weapons?
Or, do all the Eastern Bloc guns share a basic design?
Just wondering... Pirates? What pirates?

Ya could tell from the comps that the Russians were carrying AK-74 or AKMs in 5.45 cal. Probably tossed the pirates AKs in the water , or kept them to sell on the black market. Our troops are underpaid no doubt , but I'd bet the Russians make less in a year than an E-1 makes in a month.

Interesting video, but I didn't see anything on there supporting the fact that they were left on the boat or handcuffed to the rails. If that is infact, what happened, I don't guess they will be cutting any future hostages any slack. Too bad, actually.

Maybe, you can't get as much for a dead hostage.
I think they should play a real rough game with them, sink the boats and let them swim 50 miles back to shore. You don't have to be a genius to understand the skinny guys didn't come back.

Excellent idea. It would save the cost of using a decommissioned US vessel at taxpayer cost, it's a realistic training environment, and it would help teach these maggots that there is a price to pay for High Crimes at sea. It would also add a little badly-needed chlorine to the gene pool!

I don't believe they wasted handcuffs on these vermin. I think they must've cut up some fishing line or fishing nets and used the line to tie the pirates to the railing.
What? No fishing line or fishing nets?

In the mid-late 70's piracy was a problem in the anchorage at the port of Lagos, Nigeria.
Some swashbucklers made the mistake of targeting a Soviet freighter one night. Gunfire was heard from the direction of the Soviet ship, it then picked up anchor, steamed out of port, radioing the authorities there appeared to be some bodies in the water.
This was in the old days when the Soviet Merchant Marine was pretty much an extension of the navy.

What a shame! They should have been given a comfortable cell with all the tv and reading material they want want. A fully equipped gym with weights and aparatus to become perfect physical specimens to better overcome the general public when released. 3 square meals a day and any type mind altering drugs their heart desires. The ACLU to help them harass innocents on the outside with lawsuits and the such.
Our American system of justice is so much better in re-habilitating the lawless and cold hearted killer types. Just look at the evidence. We are much more civilized and our streets are much safer as a result. NOT!!! Just one more aspect of Government failure.

If the owners of these freighters wanted to stop piracy all they need do is hire a couple of guys to live on board when traveling in these waters. They could be armed with light machine guns and orders to shoot anything threatening the ship. But that's expensive and not pc.

I see no indication that there were LIVE pirates on board when the ship was skuttled. I'd be more willing to believe that the pirates were executed, the bodies placed on the ship, the ship scuttled. What did the Russians have to gain by keeping the pirates alive?

Why merchant ships unarmed?!
I wish an expert in maritime rules and regulations would tell us why. Is it to protect pirates from harm or are ship owners afraid of mutiny. I have visited some oil tankers and the crews are, shall we say, a bit rough-looking.

When did they stop with "Walk the plank". That would be a a good video, too. Back in the late 90's early 2000 time period, GEMKEY magazine wrote an article about drug traders in an area in SE Asia. The gov't deemed the area unsafe for gem traders because of the narcotics trade. The gov't (Burma?) grabbed every drug dealer, manufacturer, they could get their hands on and executed them on live TV. End of problem.

Good for smoking pirates, pretty poor for chasing subs.
