Default Local shooting tonight

Earlier tonight, 12/23, a friend of a friends son, burgled a local store. While in side, officers responded. The punk fired at an officer striking him in a leg, that officer and others returned fire killing suspect.
I know people effected on both sides of this situation, and it bothers me that some of the deceased family are raging that their "poor boy" didn't deserve to die for a B&E. I did say he shot first, if he had left it at B&E, no gun, he would have been home for Christmas. Stupid.
I am sorry for their loss, but it sounds like a righteous shoot for Blue.
And am glad that officer gets to see Christmas.

I have seen more than a few Officer Involved Shootings. In this case the decedent tragically chose to move his crime from burglary to attempted murder of a police officer. As much as his family may not accept it right now, it is a justified shooting.

My thoughts are with the injured officer. I hope he fully recovers and is back on duty soon.

The perp does not deserve any consideration. He brought his sentence on himself and he hurt his family in the process.

Here's a story of local talent. He tried to run down a trooper. I get Chicago news and this kind of stuff happens a lot. Police pull over a car after a chase. Perpetrator tries to ram his way out and take some police with him. Perpetrator gets shot full of holes. Mama says "he was A GOOD BOY, he dint have no gun". Are these people born without a brain?"

The burglar started it; the cops finished it. It was a public service killing.

I was taught by my first training officer that if you're forced into a deadly force situation, try to make it a shooting instead of a "gun fight".

Good job for the good guys. The perp made the decision. The cops reacted to that decision.

No brain and an entitlement heart! Government checks probably had all run out and the poor Momma's boy just needed some more freebies.

Ends up, it wasn't a B&E, it was a StrongArm, that turned to Armed Robbery when the perp took a gun from the store owner.

"Are these people born without a brain?"

Apparently so... I'm surprised it wasn't reported how the perp was "turning his life around" and was going to continue the work of Mother Teresa.

My concern is more with the police officers who had to respond and how they, and their families, are handling things.

The strangest I've been involved in is when the son of a friend broke into another friends house - they didn't know each other. The homeowner's son shot the invader and killed him, after repeated warnings to the invader.

I know both parents very well, and it was hell for both of them. The son of the homeowner was arrested by a zealous DA, and eventually charges were dropped, but not before they had an up close and personal view of the legal system. The mother of the deceased still hasn't accepted that it was a justified self-defense shooting or that her son was a thug. It kinda destroyed her life as well.

It's a tale of two middle-class suburban families that I knew fairly well. I've listened to both talk about how it affected them and tried to console both. How often do you know personally both sides of a justified shooting - who didn't know one another?

It is a sad situation. I hope the best for the policeman, and feel sorry for the parents of the deceased - they did lose someone they loved, even if he was a dirtbag.

I'm sorry that this happened, but as so many others have posted, the actor made his decision and left the officer with only one course of action.

You see this sort of thing a lot more lately. Folks from good family that grow up and become dirtbags. Some of it is faulty parenting and some of it is drugs. I would guess the perp either needed a quick fix for some crack or he was just waking up from a meth binge. Either way, nobody forced him to do it. It could be PCP behavior but I haven't seen a lot of that lately. Roll Tide!

Plainly, another example of the failure of our educational system to have inculcated this young man with the rudimentary concept of a cost/benefit equation. In this instance: cost= several years of incarceration or probation/benefit = fistful of dollars from market till; cost = death at the hands of a trained professional/benefit = several years of incarceration or probation. Darwin's theory reaffirmed...

Very sad.
Life lost.
Family loses son.
Officer hurt.
Officer forced to kill.
Officer must deal with having taken a life, even though justified.

How does a parent justify that their little Johnnie Angel was really on the straight and narrow when he was in somebody else's home or business uninvited and with ill intent? How does shooting at the police make you a victim?

I don't know what makes folks think that stealing and robbing and pillaging and general mayhem does not have consequences. The only thing I can attribute this to is a lot of people without any moral fiber because they are not exposed to morality at home, in school, or even on TV anymore. Even the 10 Commandments are not welcome in public places anymore, and what can be wrong reminding people that lieing and stealing and murder is wrong, and honor your parents?

They usually post a pic of the perp with his cap and gown on, like he's the next Einstein.

A society that makes war against its Police had better learn to make friends with its criminals.

I got a phone call about this a few hours after it happened. I grew up in that community, went to high school with the perps parents, and know some of the deputies and police officers. Some of the initial information I received turned out to not be perfectly factual, but it was close enough.
That was a good place to grow up 40 years ago, but then the near city annexed it and a housing project got built then the main two employers went bust, and the old main street turned into a "Ghost Town". Boarded up stores and the Post Office shuttered. The last time I was there for a high school home coming game, I walked across the parking lot as far as the stadium gate and turned back to the car, left and haven't been back.

Blame the parents, blame the scools, blame society---when does personal responsibility come into the equasion?
I don't know when we will learn that folks just do strange things they know better than doing.

the cop did what he had to do, it is sad the way people try to put the blame on everyone but the one that needs it. glad the cop went home safe!

A little update on this; I thought it interseting. I would especially draw attention to the text discription beneath the video frame.

I'm well known here as a harsh critic of the police. That being said:
  1. Don't be a burglar.
  2. Don't shoot at the police (or anyone else not committing a deadly force crime against you).
The kid was stupid and it cost him his life. I've got no sympathy for him at all. I expect the police to obey the law. Defending themselves from people trying to murder them doesn't contravene that in any way.

Bad choices = bad results.

Some people can recover from a bad upbringing. A lot can't.

The family's reaction tells me all I need to know about how he was raised, and with (or without) what values.

We had a little moron around here named Arthur Buford get shot by somebody whom Artie tried to rob on the victim's own lawn. His mutant family and "posse" had the same reaction.

The Comanches were taught from childhood that it was their right to commit theft, rape, torture and murder against anybody who wasn't a Comanche. Would you expect the average Comanche child to have an epiphany out of the blue that somehow that was wrong?

A lot of kids are being raised (or not raised, as the case may be) to have no more introspection regarding how they treat others than a Comanche warrior. I've seen it in poor kids from the inner city. I've seen it in wealthy frat boys whose fathers were business executives.

If you raise your kids to believe that their whim is law, they're probably going to act on it.

Don't whine when somebody says "no"... at gunpoint if necessary.
