This might have been asked before, just wondering what you like,it can be a rifle or handgun caliber and if you want give the model of our favorite weapon. I think my favorite is the 44 magnum and my S&W 29-2 with 8 3/8'' bbl. Merry Christmas

As the screen name suggests , when it comes to sixguns , it's the .41 Remington Magnum. It's the name I picked when I joined the old Sixgunner forum.

1.) .22lr
It's cheap, readily available , easy to shoot, and fun.
2.) .38 spl / .357 Magnum
Easy to reload, very accurate, a lot of data out there for going from mild to wild.
3.) .30-06
Unmatched versatility for the reloader, the ability to take any game in North America, available at any back water podunk bait store.

.22 LR in my Thompson Machine Operative B or my old Browning Buckmark with a TM Zephyr suppressor

12 ga. in my Browning A-5 Light Twelve

.30-06 in my SIG SHR970 or my 1944 Garand. Two rifles; same great caliber.

.45 ACP in the SIG P220 or 9mm in the Glock 19. I know that is two guns and two calibers but I refuse to choose between them because I wouldn't want to hurt either one of their feelings

My favorite changes over the years and will probably keep changing as long as I shoot. It started out as 32 Long then went to 32 WCF. Then it progressed to 45 Colt and 45 ACP until I picked up my first 41 Mag in the early 80s. Last few years I find I load a lot of 38 Special which I ignored for a LONG time because ammo was cheap and easy to find. However now I'm back to 32 Long and 32 WCF.

So my favorite calibers are 22 LR, 30-06 and 16ga. With the exception of my military time I can and have done everything I need to do with a firearm with one of those calibers. Though 30-06 and 16ga is close enough to 7.62 Nato and 12 ga as to be moot.

I like .45 Colt caliber. Most accurate wheel gun I've seen is my Model 1955 in that caliber. Punches great big holes in the paper, easy to see with my old eyes from 25 yards away. Great on iron targets at 50 yards too. A blast to shoot one handed on the pneumatic shooting range at 15 yards.

For some reason the same gun with its 45ACP cylinder / ammo is not as accurate. I plan to try it again with 45 Auto Rim brass to see if it works better than ACP brass. Might try to use .455" bullets in Auto Rim brass. Anyone tried that?

Hands down the .22 but if I had to list, I would adopy our esteemed moderator's list and reasonings in their entirity. I would also add 12ga for the exact same reasons.

Try the mom and pop store in Bumphouque Louisiana and ask for a box of .357 sig, some 7mm-08 and a box of .28 gauge spreader loads and see where that gets ya!

I am not opinionated but, every rifle caliber since the 30-06 and pistol calibers since the .357 has been a waste of time. Larry

.357 Magnum, but largely because I can also use .38 ammo for lesser needs.

Favorite gun is probably the S&W M-66-3 with four inch barrel and Pachmayr Presentation grips.

But I fire more .357 ammo from a prized Ruger GP-100, which is larger and better designed for those pressures on a frequent basis.

There are calibers I like and calibers I shoot most. They aren't the same thing.

I just have a never-ending respect for the .44 Special. Its magnum cousin seems like an overkill round to me, and one that carries more oomph than is needed in almost every situation. If I would only shoot soft loads in a .44 magnum, why not just rely on the parent round? From 1908 to 1955 it was THE cartridge in the S&W world, and only a few guys with long distances around their houses and a perceived need to drop deer with a wheelgun at 600 yards thought otherwise.

But when I buy guns for my collection, I really seem to load up on .38s and .22s. So I'd have to go with .38 Special and .22 LR for basic shooting.

I'll just observe in passing that these rounds perform best for me in prewar and postwar transitional revolvers.

As a footnote, I really like general shooting with .32 Long, .38 S&W, and .45 ACP (in a 1917), but they don't count as favorites.

300 Savage in my Remington 700 BDL amd Savage 99; .45 Colt in my S&W 25-5 (with BullseyeSmith trigger job; and .357 Mag. in my S&W 66-6 3" (again with a BullseyeSmith trigger job). BullseyeSmith trigger jobs are unbelieveably smooth.

Mine hands down is the 45 Colt. My favorite guns to shoot are single actions in 45 Colt. It's also good as a dual purpose round, as there are plenty of rifles in that caliber too.

Next would be the 357.

Without a doubt, the 44 Special is my favorite. After that any caliber with a four as the first numerial in it's designation is right up there, also.

There's just something very comforting about a wheelgun (or an auto, for that matter) that can spit out a chunk o' lead that weighs 200 grains or better at 850+ fps. It dosen't hurt a thing that most of this class of cartridge is capable of shooting the apple off of someone's head without messing up their "do".

Having said all that my second choice would be the classic 45 ACP. It still amazes me that back when I was a kid this round was considered a very powerful, big kicker that was hard to master due to the recoil and power level ??? I've got a couple of very nice 1911's but the real sleeper is the 625-2. It's a serious accurate gun that really shines at the range, especially in double action. I know why ole' Jerry M. chose this one for speed/accuracy shooting double action. That extra weight of the full length lug underneath the barrel makes this gun immediately settle right back down to the right spot, making it easy to concentrate on your next shot. I'm not as fast as him but I certainly can amuse myself with this good revolver. It makes me smile and that's what counts !

Then there's the 41 Magnum. Actually, there should have been a 41 Special. I know, there is one, but it got out of sequence, somehow. If it had come first, instead of the magnum version this would have been the most popular magnum caliber instead of the 44 Mag. I've got 2 model 57 no dash guns, one an S number gun with 4 inch tube and beautiful diamond targets and a N numbered 6 inch that will amaze any good shooter at 100 yards.

It's just too hard to name a favorite caliber with so many good one's out there.

I cast my vote along these same lines too.
Hard to beat the .22... Bang, bang, bang for cheap..
38/.357 hard to beat.. Super versatile.
And a 30-06 good for most any game critters, and it's easy
to find nearly anywhere.
And few burglars want to get their front end aligned with a .12 gauge,
and has been known to catch a bird or two when not busy watching
the house.

But.. my most used pistol these days is a .40 S&W... I like that
it's a fairly wide load, and my artificial plastic pistol holds a lot of em.. :|
They always say, safety in numbers..
If I can't hit it with the first five shots, I've got twice that still to go. :\

I'm with DeadAye on this one.... 50cal BMG.

Especially enjoy shooting the M1 incendiary rounds with my Boys AT rifle rebarreled in .50 cal. Incredibly accurate even with iron sights. Love the "flash - bang" on impact.

However probably shoot more .38 special target loads than anything else. Never go the range without my K-38 or Colt OMM.

Although im a better shot with .38's, I have my gun with me in a lot of woods/camping scenarios and feel a lot more prepared with .357's on me. So, for that reason I choose .357 magnum. I mean I was a boy scout. It's all about preparation. Other than that I have a lot of fun and feel very prepared with a 12ga

I would have to say the .357 mag because of it's versatility and .30-06 for it's big bang for the buck.

The arsenal is loaded with 22, 9mm, 45mm ACP, 38 Special, and 357; so it must be one, or all, of those.

While I usually take .22, 9mm, 40S&W, and .45acp to the range with me, I tend to shoot more .40S&W then other calibers. The .40 is probably followed by .22lr, .45acp and lastly 9mm.

As far as cartridge unloaders go it's generally; a Beretta 92FS that converts from 9mm to .22lr and .40S&W, a SIG P226R that does the same and a S&W 1911 & 4506-1 for .45acp. My S&W blued revolvers go less often but are the same calibers, subsituting .38 spec. for the .40S&W.

I do reload all my centerfire calibers.

Used to be the .45 ACP. Now I find that the .38 Special fills all my handgun needs. In rifles, I like the .303 Brit, just because.

Never thought about a "favorite". All my guns have a use and purpose, so I guess my favorite is the one I'm using at the time. 38/357 and .22 get the most use.

In centerfire handguns, Seems I've morphed from my longtime favorite .45 Auto, to the 38 Special. Based on the numbers of guns in my safe.

In centerfire rifles, there's only one. The 30-06. In my case, its in my 1944 M1.

But never forget the .22LR!

Believe it or not the .38 Special has become a favorite of mine as well! It does its job without a lot of fuss and I don't have to hunt for brass in the weeds anymore!
Rifle: 7.62x54R, it's just wicked cool, especially out of a Model 44 carbine.
Shotgun: 12 Gauge, and you know why.
But I hafta give both the .41 Magnum and .44 Special honorable mention. They do occupy my imagination from time to time! Dale

I go for .45colt. I really do like to shoot my old Uberti Schofield. This revolver gives me much first and second prices at a shooting match with handloaded ammo.

But, when my life depents on it, I go for the allround .38 special.
It fits in my S&W model 681, model 15, model 48, model 60, Military and Police, Colt Python, Colt Peacekeeper, Mateba MTR 8, Unica 6, Colt official police, Model 10 and some others.
So when big problems occur I dont have to look to far for a revolver and the proper ammo.

10mm Auto. 22lr in rifle.

I have an affection for all my calibers, except for the 40 S&W. Got some 44 mags, 9mms, and 45acps. The 357 Sigs sometimes threaten the 10mm for top spot.

3.) .30-06
Unmatched versatility for the reloader, the ability to take any game in North America, available at any back water podunk bait store.
I know the OP only asked for one caliber, but I think you have to look outside of that box and add a few. I would have to agree with Smith357.....these 3(4) are probably some of the most universally available and versatile rounds you can find. You can cover every conceviable need with these 3 calibers IMO.

45 acp. I can't decide if I like it better in revolver or auto.

Well, after thinking about it, I'm sure it is best served from a round gun.
