Default Bulk AR-15 ammo

where's the cheapest place to pick up a thousand rounds of quality ammo. Not match grade stuff, but not steel cases either. Checked Cheape Than Dirt and found several offers of $290/1000 and seems to be Federal/American Eagle.

Is this a good value package?

tks in advance,
SC

You want 223 or 5.56 loadings?

The best deal on 5.56 loading is the Israeli IMI offered by one of the larger reloading suppliers.

edit to add: they still have it

Georgia Arms sells reloads. The OP was quoting new manufacture ammo prices.

When you can buy top quality new ammo for 27 cents a round (IMI price I mentioned), why consider reloads for the same or higher price?

The IMI is good stuff but some batches have extremely hard primers. As in slamming hammer guns (AR's, mini 14 etc) will set them off but my Mini MkX bolt gun will not. YMMV. Joe

Check Wideners, Sportsman Guide, Midway, and Graf & Sons - then compare to CTD. See who's got the best deal.

You'll need to decide whether you want M855/GI Green tip/"SS109" 62 grain FMJs or if you want 55gr M193 type ball. The former is generally a bit more expensive.

If you're in SC, the Palmetto State Armory location off 278 on the way from Beaufort to HHI has ammo cans of the stuff just sitting there ready to go.

Im not sure where everyone is finding these great deals on IMI cause I've searched high and low and the best I can find on IMI is $180.00 per 500. If someone could post a link that would be awesome.

I usually buy from SportsmansSupply on GB. Usually between $300-325 per 1000 shipped.

Be sure to check the shipping costs too. Ammoman includes shipping in their price so you have to look at the shipped cost to see what the best deal is. Then calculate the average cost per round since some deals are 420 rounds and some are 500.

I just ordered a can (420 rounds) of the Federal (Lake City) .62gr green tip stuff from Brownell's tonight. This is the same ammo used by our military. Paid $149.95, plus $12.95 shipping (including a shell feeder plate for my LnL case feeder, and a set of Brownell's screwdrivers...).

I thought this was a pretty good deal for the good stuff. LGS has the same can for $179.95. I think Midway has it as well, on sale for the $150 price, but I have been staying away from them lately because I'm tired of them bumping the shipping charges up to cover more profit for them. The .62gr is a little more pricey than the .55gr Federal ammo, but this is my Zombie defense stash; steel rod core...! I also have a stash of .55gr for general plinking. I don't/won't run steel case ammo in my ARs.

I agree that the IMI ammo is good ammo. I got a bunch a few years ago for $4.50/box of 20 (.55gr fmj). Bought that at LGS. I should have bought all they had, it is very good quality, and shoots great.

Natchez usually has good prices on 5.56/.223 ammo. I was going to order from them this time, but they did not have the other items I needed... I've also had good luck with Wideners and Powder Valley.

Walmart also is carrying the 420 round can of LC 62 gr stuff at many of their locations. It might pay to check their price (it varies by store).

I seem to remember that CTD got very proud of their ammo during the panic and their prices doubled or tripled overnight.

Black Hills or ASYM (from Stan Chen). I've gone through a few K of the BH, and seen a lot more. Good stuff.

I use Ammoman.com.

These are now $159 / can of 420 rounds on strippers and this price includes a clip guide/can and shipping.

I'm not sure about CTD's shipping prices but last time I looked they had Federal 55gr. for just over 300 per 1k.
If you don't mind reloaded (and I don't because I don't have the space for a good set up) Georgia Arms sells good stuff. Every time they're at a gun show I pick up 500 9mm FMJ, 100 .41mag (shoots great, last show it was $22 per 50 which is under half price of my LGS), and 500-1k 5.56 .
I emailed PSA about bulk and they said it should be back in the next week or two. Apparently a lot of people go ammo for Christmas.

I recently bought a case of 855 with penetrator for Approx $345 and about 20 for shipping. This is a 1200 round case. Not the 1000 you get from federal that says "not for duty" on the can. Some cans have it some don't. 40 boxes 30 rounds each. I've shot this in my match H-Bar and it runs great. Frank

For shooting/targets, etc. I've been pleased with the Remington 55 gr. MC (FMJ) loads. I've also had very good results with the Ga. Arms "Canned Heat" 55 gr. FMJ ammo. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

You'll see links posted to answer specific questions like this.
OK:
Someone asks where to buy bulk 5.56??
Someone answers Widener's Reloading and Shooting Supply INC
No harm, no foul.

What we don't like:
Blatant self promotion of websites-
"Hi! I (or my buddy) just opened a website! This is a big forum with lots of traffic, so I thought I'd advertise here for free without even asking!

Indexing bare (or nearly bare) links of every video on Youtube-

We figure if people want to watch 20 shooting vids, they probably know where Youtube is and might even be capable of using the search function.
We figure if people can read, they can probably find the news sites.
We figure if people are shopping for Glocks, they might be able to find some......

I have posted links to sites that show a specific gun that I own as a response to someone asking questions about that type of gun. I have also posted links to sites that I have done business with if they sell something that someone is trying to find. I have not been advised not to do so and I think that these are examples of acceptable links as described by Lee.

.223 is loaded to lower pressure specs than 5.56. You can shoot .223 out of a 5.56 upper but it's not generally considered safe practice to put 5.56 out of .223 unless it's a .223 wylde chamber.
.223 chambers are also a bit tighter and depending on what you read and who you talk to, are inherently more accurate than
5.56, especially if you're putting .223 down range with a 5.56.

For plinking and varmint within 150 yards I like the 62 gr. Brown Bear. It's not under powered like TulAmmo and Wolf and costs about .25 more per box.

I like the Silver Bear 62 gr HP and bought quite a lot of it from CTD. I've been shooting it in a piston carbine I built myself. I'm very happy with it.

Yeah, I seem to remember then advertising $700 for a 1000 round case for 5.56 ammo. They are high on a lot of their ammo. I shop around trying to get the best deals for my ammo money. I expect them to start raising prices as the election draws near and panic buying starts taking place. Its already starting with powder, primers, certain types of magazines not being available. You get the picture. Frank

I think the free bore before the rifling starts on 5.56 is longer for longer heavyer bullets. .223 Rem free bore is less for varmint bullet styles. Check your barrel what caliber does it say? Better off not trying 5.56 in .223 less docter visits.

I got a flyer from Cheaper than Dirt this week with an ad for Lake City 5.56 XM855 420 rounds for $159.97. I paid $150 recently for it. When I called to order some yesterday I was informed the price went up $30.00. I declined.
Brownells is out of stock on same ammo today. I think the price increases and availability have started.

The stuff with an X designator is rejects. While that used to be cosmetic flaws, in the pre-2001 days, now you will find that the X often means rejected for over-pressure. In XM193 I have heard of lots that are at or above proof levels. Cheap is the not the same as inexpensive. Saving a few cents a round and blowing up my BCM is not what I would call a good deal, so I generally stick to Black Hills reloads, and might try some of Chen's ASYM ammo.

I'm not sure where you get that info about X being rejects as I understand from a Federal rep that they only sell rejects to employees and mark their boxes in that manner. I've seen those boxes BTW.
The Federal XM855 I have bought from Brownells is claimed to be new first run ammo. I'd think if they were rejects Brownells would state so if nothing more than to protect their reputation.
If you have differing information I'd be interested to hear about it as I have many rounds of the stuff.

From Federal's web site:

• XM193 product is first run, first quality product manufactured at Lake City Army Ammunition Plant for Federal Cartridge and is made to Federal specifications typical for commercial ammunition.

• All XM193 product is the same regardless of the sku or part number. (ie. XM193C is the same as XM193F, XM193CBP and etc…) The only difference is the package configuration.

**********

No ammo company these days will sell rejected ammo to the public, especially over-pressure rejects.

Lawyers would have a field day, and many folks would be new "lottery winners".

If anyone has reservations, just contact the manufacturer, they will give you the real skinny.

The closest thing I ever saw to "reject" ammo was patrol turn-in ammo from Israel that was available in the 90s. This was grungy, stuff turned in by field troops and range leftovers from training. The importer cleaned it in a cement mixer, and sold it in 30 cal ammo cans.

It was very cheap, and all went bang, no problem. But the importer was totally up front about what it was (real surplus, no guarantees). I shot several thousand rounds of the stuff and may have tossed less than a handfull of it due to huge dents.

Multiple reports from people who teach a lot some of whom have a lot of rounds (well over 500K) go downrange in front of them every year. Had some myself a few years ago and sold it when I was between jobs and short of bucks. The buyer (medically retired Marine) used it for varmint control hunting and said it was very hot compared to anything else he had shot.

According to the folks at Federal I have talked with, Federal Eagle .223 and Federal XM193 are the same cartridge. One may have a polished case and the other not, but its the same bullet, same powder, and loaded to the same specs.

Just what I've been told. I buy Federal 100 round bulk, 20 round XM193 and XM193 on stripper clips in a 30cal ammo can at WaldoMart and it is generally the cheapest Federal I can find. Good ammo.
