Default "Do The Work"--Or At Least Some Of It, Anyway

Ran across this: No, You Can't Pick My Brain. It Costs Too Much - Forbes

It reminds me of the posts that begin with "educate me on ------". With the resources available today and a little initiative, how hard is it to get up to speed on basic stuff?

No reflection on good, well thought out topics that others learn from as well.

Having begun my life on cattle ranch dealing with 900 or so mother cows on a daily basis and the last thirty or so years dealing with crooks, I personally have found it wise to listen or talk to at least one somebody who has been there/done that....

Books and other forms of instruction usually offer just enough information to get 'cha in trouble....the "old heads" will tell you "the rest of the story" when and if they think you are worthy..

the answers are rarely a problem to find. but you need to know the right questions in order to find them.
that is the source of many posts starting with "Bring me up to speed on ....."
another cause would be that the topic is just too elegant in its simplicity
they've already asked the question, and found the answer, and just cant believe the answer was as simple as it is.

RE: asking the RIGHT question:

On another forum, I was taken to task because, in response to a question on effectiveness of a caliber for defense, I pointed out that a person in one part of the country might have totally different requirements than someone in another (i.e. western urban areas versus New England areas). My point is that no one can make such a decision for anyone else. I would have asked the OP where he was, and THEN made a comment.

Sometimes it's just the act in itself just to interact with others on here, it's very intertaining when the wife isn't interested in +p ammo!

I don't have a problem with the "educate me on..." posts. Isn't this one of the purposes of forums like this? If someone asks about a particular firearm or accessory and the majority of the members here, who have a lot of knowledge and experience, say it's a piece of junk I'd probably not consider buying it.

Default 'Free'

My CPA, and my Atty, send me a bill when they spend time 'helping' me.
I expect that. Then they ask for info for a DIY project they are working on, or have a gun question. I don't send them a bill, like I should.
I do have a new policy that is working, when I help a neighbor out, or loan them a tool, when they ask 'what do I owe you?' I tell them. It is normally calculated in beers, but it's something.
Be well

The web is a wealth of info and a little searching can educate anyone on anything. On a related note, I'm still amazed at the amount of people who dont think to do a google search. I can't count the number of times I posted pics of a holster and mentioned it was by lobo gun leather and someone asked me for a link.

And once in a while you can even find CORRECT answers on the web. Which is probably why people come here.

I would rather a person ask an "educate me on" question here and get a reasonably correct answer, then run around the internet and get 50 probably inaccurate answers. When it comes to shooting, and handling firearms, it could be that guy down the street who might turn out to be a new good safe gun handler that joins your club.

My favorite is when someone asks a specific question about a piece of gear, and half the responses have nothing to do with the question.

Q: "Where do I find the best price on a Dillon".
A) "Buy a single stage press" or "Try a Rockchucker."

Q: "Where is the best source of info on using an HKS Speedloader?"
A: "You really need to use an auto and Buffalo Bore Ammo because the use of speedloaders is documented as being ineffective."

Q: "Would you rather go to a restaurant for a steak or Italian tonight?"
A: "Yeah, that would be fine."
Sorry, that last one is something my wife would say, leaving me to guess which answer is correct...

I see posts from time to time on the forum that state "This may be a dumb question, but..."

I don't think there is such a thing as a dumb question when it comes to firearms. Dumb actions, yes. Dumb questions, no.

For some reason, I feel quite sure that the link provided by the OP was a reasonable response to a real problem. However, I'm not so sure that it had anything to do with much of what shows up on this forum. Nevertheless, I suppose it can't hurt to Google a topic before bugging this forum.
