How does a Hi-Power compare with a Colt 1911? Sonora

Any idea when yours was made? Your number is some 4000 earlier than mine. All I've been able to find out is mine is pre-63, because of the internal extractor.

Also, does yours have a gouge in the left grip? I've wondered, since I got it, if there was some kind of plaque there, that was removed when it was surplused out. But I've never met anyone else with one to ask. If yours also has the gouge, then it makes my plaque theory plausible. If yours don't, then I've just got a buggered grip.

I recently read 8,000 of these were sold by FN in 1961 to the Buenos Aires Police dept. Not sure if this is accurate but I would guess the guns mostly date to 61 or a year or two earlier. Anyone chime in here... My grips are not damaged but I don't think they are original.

Like yours, mine says Police Province, BS Aires - 61, but I figgered that was like a police precinct, more than a date. My number is in the 6000s. I notice that yours is polished and blue. Mine is gray/green parkerized.

I gave the MKIII .40 S&W at the top of the photo to our son for Christmas. The bottom is my 1973 model 9mm that I have owned since 1980.

Here are mine; both in .40 S&W

Both are the cream of the crop in autos...I just give the edge to the HP as it fits my hand better and is a softer shooter...1911s have better triggers on average but I'm pretty happy with the 4.5# trigger on my HP from Jim Hoag....

Why, normally one would put them in the same location Browning specified when they had Pachmayr produce the rubber grips you see in the picture with the .22. But then, who said anything about normal - right?

Here is my Armand Swenson built Hi-Power.
About 30 years ago I was talking to some of the Elders in our gun club about which 9mm pistol was the best. One of the fellows goes out to his car and comes back with a briefcase and 100 rounds of factory ammo. Inside the briefcase was a Browning Hi-Power, S&W 59, S&W 39, Beretta 92, 1911 Colt in 9mm and a Walther P-38. He let me shoot each pistol so I could make up my own mind. I fell in love with the Hi-Power that day. It fit my hand better then the others and as I had a 1911a1 Colt already, it just seemed to make sense.

I really need to come to terms with what I'm doing with her. I haven't even told myself I'm fine with tearing out that horrid mag safety. And the stock sights are that old style from when men must have had 20/15 vision since they are next to impossible to see. Add a sunny day at the range and the sights may as well be invisable. So she sets as a safe queen. I need to either get off the fence and have some decent Novaks installed and rip out that mag safety or just sell her. I just can't figure the direction just yet. She is crying for some nice Spegel panels though. I should at least do that for her.

Installing sights on that gun, if it is hard-chrome finished (appears to be), is not going to be much fun. It may be best left alone, for that reason.

As to the mag safety, anyone with a brass punch and a few minutes can remove that and it does help the trigger pull, sometimes greatly. I was a bit disappointed when I took it out of my Mk III. Good improvement in trigger action, but I expected that also to cure the annoying bit of the magazine staying in the gun when the release is pressed. Unfortunately, it didn't.

The magazine is a Browning mag, but I think it is too big for the grip-frame, so I need to get a couple Mec-Gar magazines and try them. I have heard that may cure the problem. I am not fond of the factory "mousetrap" magazines, but I guess after the Mec-Gar, that would be the next step - or else some careful whittling on the inside of the mag well.

My BHP is stainless and has a brushed finish. It's not that old, but it is at least from the time when they were both made and put together in FN's Belgium plant. I don't like the feeling of chopping her up since for all I know they didn't make a million of these and she may be a little rare. If that's the case then I think I may sell her. But as she is, I love her and yet I can't stand her. And my mag doesn't fall free either.

I'm not a big fan of them either, except for the fact they just plain launch an empty magazine clear. I don't much care for gadgets, but this one seems to function.

Your gun is not stainless. Never made the Hi-Power in stainless. You probably have hard chrome.

A simple Google search just backed you up in spades. I would have sworn up and down it was stainless. And the double slap comes from the fact that I have always wanted a hard chrome finished gun. Now that I know that's what this is, I am in love with this finish and will be sending some thing else off to have it done very soon. I freaking love this!!!!!

Bought this guy nine or ten years ago from a local Deputy. He'd sent it off for several mods to Novaks . It took so long...he lost interest in it.

I like the Heinie sights, and the gun has been accurate as well as 99.9 % reliable.

Few guns seem to feel as nice as a BHP in my hands. I ALWAYS seem to have one in the collection as a shooter. This one will not leave the safe until my Will is read. LOL.

I currently only own 2 (I used to have a .40 S&W model as well) High Powers; a 1952 Belgium formerly of the Jerusalem, Israel Police Department and a Canadian Inglis High Power circa WWII. They both shoot quite well considering age; all I did was clean and lube them the to the range to shoot:
