Strange serial number
Came accross a Browning BDA with a serial number listed as ATF7760003. Never seen a number like this. BDA serial numbers always start with 425 followed by two letters and 5 numbers. Anybody have any idea or input on this?

I have a Remington 600 action that had been apparently damaged and then overpolished before I got it. ATF provided me with a serial number to be stamped on the action since it didn't appear to be an intentional defacement or removal of the original serial number. An agent inspected the action to insure that the new serial number was indeed what they had authorized me to restamp the receiver with. Your BDA could have had the original serial number damaged, or maybe recovered with the serial removed or partially removed. ATF will issue a new serial number in some cases where the original serial number has been damaged and this is undoubtably what has happened.

I worked on a 1st generation Colt SAA for a customer that had an 'ATFxxx' serial number.
He said the gun had been stolen and then recovered many years later and finally returned to him.
The original number had been ground or filed from the frame and a few of the small parts. The BATF issued the new # and it was stamped onto the frame as the 'new' serial number.
He wasn't going to argue,,just happy to get the revolver back.

Somehow, the serial number was altered at one point (likely during the point of being stolen) and the BATFE issued their own serial number.
