I do not consider myself a Lever Rifle Freek. However I think they will be around even after you can buy a Phase Plasma rifle in the 40 Watt range...

Just this deer season I carried my 44 Mag Winchester Trapper as my "Utility" rifle durring December and I shot 2 deer with my 1895 Winchester in 405WCF... This 1895 is a takedown and is my most favorite Lever rifle of all time. An 1886/mod 71 rates a close second.

Just a few days ago I spent some time in the woods with a buddies Mod 71 Carbine in 348WCF, on a pig hunt. What a nice gun...

For the Money, a Marlin in 45/70 is hard to beat.

Lever Rifles are an American Icon. Every American should have at least one...

Thumbs up

My first rifle was a Marlin 336C lever action 30-30. I still have that gun, cost me $79.99 back in 1977 and I've taken several deer with it. It's light, handy and accurate. Great deer gun for the woods of PA where the brush is thick and the shots are short and quick.

I make leather for lever guns, I can tell you they are far from dead. For me the Marlins are the most popular. I start with a Pre 64 Winnie, then an 1895 Marlin in 45-70, now a Texan in 30-30. If run across a .357 1894 Cowboy I'll probably pay to much for it. Did I mention I'm in my early twenties?

I'll always have my Model 92 Winchester Saddle Ring carbine, but my Colt Lighting Pump can shoot rings around it.

No lever guns are not dead! Just look at sales!!!

I always wondered how Custer's men might of done if armed with a Winchester Model 1873, and a the Colt Peacemaker???

Anybody else thought about this???

So now we know what the offspring of a Marlin 1895 and a Colt AR-15 looks like. If we are lucky, the spawn will be sterile.

It might be sick, but in the long run, I think Mossberg wants to stay in business, and I think we also want them too. If they can make a few bucks off folks with poor taste, I won't argue as long as they also keep making stuff for me.

"Are leverguns Dead?" Ya gotta be kidding!

I have quite a few, of which this early Rossi .357 Model 92 is just one example.

I think the lever guns are the "assault rifles" of the past, and they still will do just fine today...

I thought this was a (bad) joke - a spoof, someone with a bit too much time on their hands and too much skill with Photoshop, but nooo - it's unfortunately, quite real.

"You did real good, Anthony! Yeah, you're a really good boy! Now, wish it to the cornfield, Anthony. Please wish it to the cornfield, now!"

Anyone who has tried to buy a Marlin 1894C (.357 Magnum, .38 Spl.) in the last four or five years will know that lever gun demand is quite high and still rising for that model. Used prices have often exceeded new prices—MSRP is $677— just because new ones were not being manufactured fast enough. Even used ones coming on the market in increasing numbers failed to meet the demand. The move from Connecticut to New York has also increased the demand and price for used rifles.

Here's a chart I've kept of the phenomenon, these are Average Used Prices :

I will confess to adding a poly Ram Line stock to my other Marlin. I just wanted to dump the terrible and way heavy chunk of wood that looked like a stock carved from a 2x4. That one is the one I take into the woods. I'm also thinking of having it hard chromed or some kind of coating. I just want ease of carry in the woods while not carrying home a rusty gun with wood warped by water or humidity. I'm all about modernizing a lever rifle, but rails and a M4 stock??? Really??? Not even I'm that odd of a duck. I could see buying one for no other reason than to poke fun of it for kicks. If I had the money to do such things at least.

My first rifle was a Winchester 94 in 30-30. My oldest son's first rifle was a Winchester 94 in 30-30. Now my youngest son's first rifle is a 30-30, but it is a Marlin with which he missed his first deer this year. I hunted with the Marlin a time or two this year and was thinking maybe I need another one and give my A-bolt a rest.

I think that your eulogy for the classic Lever Gun is more than a little premature.
I did not forget the BROWNING but its not a classic lever gun in my book, its a bolt action without the bolt and uses a lever.
We will see --- are you gonna buy the new tacticool Mossberg--- if that is the future lever gun, Dead-- Dead--- Dead!!!

Though I have a Winchester 94 30-30 I enjoy hunting with, I'm thinking of getting a 'tactical' Uberti 1860 Henry or 1866 Yellowboy for fun shooting.

I don't think they will ever be dead.We can ask the same question about revolvers and the obvious answer would still be an emphatic NO!
We keep hearing the "warriors"(some of them self appointed) telling us to get into the 21st century. (I'd rather go back to the 19th myself.)
Of course,I own the plastic and a couple of really nice high quality AR's.It just makes sense. But those are not where my firearm affections and appreciations lie.
Holy Moses! I'm finally on a forum with a bunch of old owlhoots like me who appreciate the finer things in life.

they'll never be dead, theres too much history in the old leverguns. i own a couple Browning BLR's, a Winchester Trapper, a Marlin Guide Gun and a 336. they are all great guns and whenever im asked what someone should buy for their first HD long gun, i always push them towards the .357/.44 carbines. simple to use, capable of holding more than enough .38/.44 special cartridges and handy as it gets.
in my opinion this is like asking if the SA revolvers are dead.

Henry Carbine .22 here as well, with the large loop lever. Would LOVE to be able to get one of the little .38/.357 short carbines of some manufacture to set next to it in the gun cabinet.

Are leverguns Dead?
No,,just unappreciated by some I guess.
I don't have any plastic guns and don't feel left out.
It's what ever a person likes.

Some of their calibers, especially the older ones are considered obsolete by many.
I don't know how a bullet going down range and connecting with a target is obsolete,,but leave it to marketing.

I'll take either of my '73 Winchesters in 44-40 anytime.
Marlin 97 22's get a workout, but they're SdVel only.
A Winchester 94 Deluxe TD rifle w/PG in 32spec shoots well.
I restocked it,,need to finish & checker the wood yet. What else is new.
Experts tell me the caliber is no good. Only a wall hanger I guess,,the bullet must bounce off of the deer made these days.

A Winchester 92 SRC in 44 needs wood and a Savage 99 in 300 was left for dead with 9 extra holes in her receiver & no butt stock.
Those two are in rotation for some resurrection work.
Worth doing?,,I think so.

Dead? They ain't even sick yet.

Knowing how expensive the levergun addiction can become, I have moved cautiously in this field so far. A couple of years ago I let myself have a modern Marlin 1894 in .44 Magnum, which I soon realized is more gun than it needed to be. But in my future lie a couple of slightly larger frame rifles with somewhat smaller bores. I have wanted a Winchester 1895 ever since I read African Game Trails. I suspect one is coming my way within the next year or so.

I've always hunted with the Montgomery Ward version of the Marlin 336. Boy is that gun fun to shoot. And for quick shooting, nothing can compare to working the lever action. Some actions may be quicker but none are more fun!

I love the Marlin 336, 30/30. It's a slow bullet, and it lobs more than it throws the bullet, but it hits with authority to 130 yards with soft points, and out to 200 with LeverRevolution ammo. I enjoy it immensely, and for brush work, the 170gr. bullet is like 200 times better than a 5.56/ .223.
There is a bit of heft to the rifle; something the new AR platforms are yes better in that regard. But then again, it's a steady shooter for the weight, and it is well balanced. And the recoil is really manageable.
A great gun, no doubt.

I'd sure like to see some of the members' .32 WS lever-guns.............I hope the hint for pics wasn't to subtle.............. Actually, any calibers one might consider non-mainstream such as a .40-82 or .50-110, etc. And gotta love the .38-55. Come on guys and girls, I'm jonesing here........

I have about half as many as I'd like, but these are keeping me happy for now. 22LR, 357, 44 Mag, 218 Bee. There are also a couple 30-30's, a 375 Winchester, and a 45/70 knocking around here as well. I prefer the Marlins to all others.

PapaJohn; the 2 in the middle with the scopes set forward- are those pistol scopes, or something different with long eye relief?

They're listed as Pistol Scopes on most websites, but they're actually Intermediate Eye Relief scopes, eye relief is 10-12", which works great on Scout Rifles. I currently have six or seven Scouted guns, and will probably add a few more before I'm through. Not everyone likes them, but I have always been a fan of Jeff Cooper, and jumped on the Scout Rifle idea long ago. Optics Planet sells these NcStar 2X7 scopes pretty cheap, and I've had good luck with them.

NcSTAR Pistolero Rifle Scope - 2-7x32 Pistol Scope / Blue / Ring FREE S&H SPB2732B. NcSTAR Pistolero Riflescopes, NcSTAR Riflescopes.

I hope lever guns are dead, as that means I'll be able to afford more of them as they get so much cheaper.

So they hold the zero pretty well??? I am looking for low power glass for 'yote hunting medium short range. Already have a 600yd gun, want to expand the AR legs because of the inexpensive ammo.

I hope they are not dead as there is something really special about the action of a lever gun. I dig my AR but it doesn't have the same fun factor as the ole cowboy gun. I'm not tacticool but I do dream of dropping some bad guy over a beautiful lady in the saloon.

I've got the same scope on all seven Scouts, and none have moved a whisker in all the time I've had them. That includes several thousand rounds through the 44 Mag, half that through the 375, and several hundred through the 45/70 since I got it in August. YMMV.

They are becoming more "lively" for me all the time. Today's purchase:

A 1964 Marlin 39A with vintage Marlin Micro-Vue 4X Scope.
