I started playing guitar in 1965, still have quite a few guitars.
Years back I got into strictly playing bass.
Since our groups played 100% Beatles music I bought German made Hofner basses, same as Sir Paul played.
Heres my 61 Cavern:

62 500/1

63 500/1

Group picture:

The main amp I use is a vintage 1966 Vox Super Beatle:

This is my 1968 Fender Bandmaster with some of my guitars:

And this is my 1970 Fender Bassman 135 with other violin copy basses along with a couple Hofners:

These are more 60's & 70's copy Hofners:

EDIT: DANG!!!I just looked at the original date on this post!! You gotta be kidding me!!! Oh well...here's my two cents worth.

I don't consider myself a collector, but I've been playing in bands since 1966, so I've managed to acquire a few good instruments over the years.

Here's the guitar I played primarily during my high school and college years.

Gibson 1953 ES-175

Then for about forty some-odd years, I played mostly bluegrass music, primarily mandolin. I was privileged to be with some excellent bluegrass musicians with whom I recorded in the 1970's. Most of them were quite a bit older than I was. In fact, you can still find some of our albums at garage sales for twenty-five cents.

Gibson 1921 F-4, Gibson 1985 F-5L

But occasionally I'd play bluegrass guitar.

Martin 1985 D-28, Martin 1975 D-18

Nowadays, I'm playing in a Southern rock/country rock band and usually play one of these.

A couple of old made-in-America Fender Telecasters.

or...a couple of Gibson Les Pauls.

Occasionally, somebody will ask me to play bass.

Fender Precision bass.

Anyway, it's a fun hobby and I've enjoyed it for many years. I used to be OCD on myself, trying to play every lick just perfectly. I think I've gotten smarter over the years and now play just to have fun. If I make a mistake on stage....who cares? Just as long as everybody is having a good time.

I only have one anymore but I think it's a doozie. It's a 1966 Mosrite Combo model. It's the same shape as the more famous Ventures model but it's a thin hollow-body with one "F" hole in the upper bout. I am the only owner since new and it's not for sale. Someone will be pleasantly surprised after I'm dead. My wife and daughter both know it is valuable but not exactly how much. E-pay has them at $3000 - $3200.

Mosrite? Nice! Haven't seen one of those in years, always wanted one but was out of my budget. Loved the Ventures, still have several LPs from the 60's.

The O.P. was talking about his son's collection. My eldest is a very avid player and his collection has blossomed into a some very nice stuff. Here are a few of his...1987 V serial number 57 reissue Mary Kaye strat, his American Standard strat work horse, a Buddy Guy strat with an autographed strap and back plate, 2 Gibson SGs, a standard and a '61 reissue in very rare sapphire blue. Lastly is a Paul Reed Smith Limited edition Custom 24 with a Brazilian rosewood fret board, hybrid hardware and a "10" top that I gave him from my collection this week (one of 500).

Between he and I we have over 40 guitars. It's a pretty cool hobby and something I really enjoy sharing (and playing) with him.

Some very nice guitar pics posted!

In addition to my son's collection, he talked me into buying some as "investments". I've enjoyed doing it and figure that worst case, I could sell them for what I've invested. I've got a couple of guitars that were pretty much bought at retail price, but most were good deals found on Reverb or eBay. I now have a basement full of guitars. LOL.

My son's band has cut an EP and is doing pretty well. It's country music with some Rock influences, but not really like the mainstream stuff you hear on the radio. Pretty good, I think. The band is Nine Miles to Nowhere.

Back in the early '60's, I had a Gibson 12 string, don't remember the Model, but when we got married the wife wanted a stereo so we went to the local Lyon & Healy store and I brought my guitar for trade. When I opened the case and took the guitar out, the salesman grabbed it out of my hand and said " Pick out any stereo you want". We did and we both went away happy !

I have an old Gibson guitar that I acquired quite a few years ago. I recently took it in for repair to the guitar shop in Las Vegas (the one they use on Pawn Stars). The guy there was very friendly and helpful explaining what I should and shouldn't do to keep it as a collectible. Basically the guitar needed new tuning knobs (the originals pretty much fell apart from age) and new strings. Total repairs were around $75. He estimated the current value of the guitar at around $1800. I bought it from a guy that needed a little cash and sold it to me for $25. That was back in the late 60's so, if I do decide to sell, it'll be for a nice profit. Oh, and I can't play any more due to arthritic fingers. Still hanging on to it though because I can't bring myself to part with it.

Beautiful Super 400. I once owned one of those, sold it to Wendy Holcome. I often wonder what happened to it, she died at the young age of 23 from an enlarged heart.
If you have deep pockets and love acoustic guitars, do a search for pre war Martin D-45's. There was only 91 made and they are worth a mint. Martin has been in business since 1833 and they paid almost a quarter million bucks for a beautiful D-45 for their museum.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Resized952016110195161840.jpg

We have several nice Les Pauls, Stratocasters, PRS, etc., but the guitar that is most special to us was custom built by Fraser Guitar out of England. They are sponsoring my son as a musician.

If you aren't into guitars, you'll think it's a ratty looking beat up guitar. It's actually a brand new guitar that has been made to look like a relic.

The guitar was made to resemble an old Gibson bass that my grandfather played (Fraser used photos that my son sent to them). My grandfather had painted a black border around the body and added white markers on the fretboard. Fraser also put his name "Smitty" on the front of the guitar. It has custom hand wound pickups, etc. My son loves playing it. My son refused to tell me what he had chosen as his design because he wanted to surprise me. I was very close to my grandfather, so it was a pretty emotional thing for me.

The photo was texted to me, so it's not very good quality.

This is an Ibanez RG770 in paisley. It was only released in Japan around 1990-1991. If you try to find one on the internet, there are next to none. My son's actually came from Japan. We also have a Violet Metallic and Red RG770 from this same time period. They should all be very similar, but my son says the Violet Metallic is the best playing guitar of the bunch.

We have other Fenders, Gibsons, PRS, etc, but this Ibanez is one of the more uncommon guitars that we have.

Trying to get Photobucket work, so I thought I'd post another guitar picture. Gibson Les Paul in Inverness Green.
