Default Anybody a guitar collector?

I'm not a guitar player, but my 15-year-old son is. He has about 7 guitars (I haven't counted lately). He is always searching Guitar Center's used section online like many of us search the gun sites. Last night, he found a newly listed Fender Telecaster supposedly signed by Collective Soul (guitar is a 1993 model, or so). The guy that had owned it said that he bought it at a radio station auction in 1995. Probably a charity auction, etc. There is no official documentation, however, so Guitar Center let it go for cheap. I paid $249. We've bought several used guitars and a Marshall tube amp from Guitar Center and have had really good luck with them.

They rated the guitar 4 stars (out of 5 possible) for quality which should mean that it's in decent shape. It's a MIM version, but I figure it's still worth $249, or more, as a player. My son doesn't have a Telecaster.

I have no idea if the Collective Soul signature adds collectability, but I like the band, so I thought it would be cool.

Seems like a good price, especially if it is a Fender and not the lesser Squier brand.

The signatures would detract from the value, in my opinion.

I quite like my Taco Telly.
As far as the whole Collective Soul thing, it'd be worth more to a fan than just a regular Taco Telly. To anyone else, it's a used Taco Telly with a bunch of aftermarket writing on it. If it's clean, you didn't take a hit on it at all. I think every gitfiddlist oughtta have a Telly in his toolbox.

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't figure the Collective Soul thing was worth much, except maybe to a Collective Soul fan. Of all the guitars that my son has, he doesn't have a Telecaster, and the guy at Guitar Center said that he personally went through the guitar and it's in real good condition.

My son just sold his MIM Stratocaster. He has a Stratocaster replica made by Rick Johnson from Yuma, AZ. Rick has made guitars for, I believe, Clapton, Alice Cooper, Keisha's machine gun, etc. My brother traded a gun to Rick for the guitar and we bought it from my brother. It's a really nice guitar, so he didn't "need" the Fender.

My son's Johnson guitar was made in America. I believe a foreign company has since bought the Johnson name out. The guitar says on the neck "Made in America, not Red China". LOL. Rick hand assembles these guitars and fabricates a lot of the parts himself.

I'm not and don't play the guitar but i almost bought one around 1984. This great pawn shop in Fremont, Ca. had a Gibson ES-335 with tobacco sunburst finish (vintage unknown) for $350. I didn't get it. I bought an original S&W Model 24 instead for about $275. I've always felt that guitar was a steal. And the .44 is long gone in a dumb trade of some sort.

For that price I'd bet it was made in Japan. It could also be made in China.'93 it could be either. Not to say that it's a bad guitar but the USA versions bring way more money. You can buy one like that all day long at that price. Hopefully the signatures are real and that should add some value to it. Maybe more in a few years.
Look on it's head stock for the made in where ever mark.

I think it's cool,Rock on blackdeuce Jr.

BTW I had a made in Japan Stratocaster from the same time period. Tobacco Burst with tremelo. Like new. It was a great guitar but my friend liked it more than me so I sold it to him for what I had in it. $100 I said he was my friend. A very happy friend.

My son is always coming up with excuses to buy a guitar. I guess he found a new one.

I checked with the salesman and he's pretty sure it was made in Mexico. He said the serial number starts with M. Doesn't really matter to me. I know it's not an American one.

It very well could be Made in Mexico. I forgot to mention that. Some of the Mex. Strats. are pretty well made and if I remember right they were partially USA. I'm not so sure at this point. I'm not a Fender guy.

Here's a few of my players,

The Hagstroms.

Nice looking geetars. I don't know beans about them, but I'm sure my son would know.

My son's Mexican Strat was actually quite nice. The Johnson is just so exceptional that he didn't play the Strat.

I used to play, but a nerve injury in my left hand sorta put an end to it. I suppose I could still bar chord....not worth it, I was always a hack anyways. I have had some interesting ones, and have had great dealings with Guitar Center. The only one I kept is a 1975 FT350 Epi that is labled Norlin Japan. They never built that model in Japan according to the books, only in Nashville (I think). It sounds as good as any Gibson I've messed with.

I know nothing about guitars but Collective Soul had a lot of hit songs.

One of several.

Tell your son to keep it up with the collecting. It's a fantastic hobby that will keep him entertained for a lifetime.

All 3 of my kids (all grown now) play guitars and at holidays, we have the darndest jam session you ever saw.

I have a mid-70's Martin D-18 and a 1964 Gibson SG that I love to play. I too bought a tube amp (a '65 Fender Vibrolux Reverb) and it sounds awesome.

It's a great hobby.....

What an interesting day to see this post! My son and I just picked up his first-ever Brand New Guitar, a Deluxe Player Strat in Sapphire Blue Transparent with gold furniture. That makes NINE guitars in the house, several of which are mine, and I don't play! I now have a drum kit (synthetic, leave me alone, I have neighbors upstairs) so our entertainment tonight is pretty well set!

It sure is pretty.

Here is my old Gibson Super 400 that I bought in 1959.
I played a lot before osteo arthritis got the better of my hands . I no longer string this guitar. I also have my 1964
ES 330 which I do still plunk on every once in a while.

That is a great looking Super 400. I noticed the tarnishing of the gold pickups around the pickguard. That's from chemicals being released by the cellulose in the pickguard. A "fingers" tailpiece and for real gold PAF's. They don't make them like that anymore.

teesur, you have a stunning example of when even factory guitar were works of art. Just beautiful.
You may want to have her re-strung, however, if for no other reason than for the neck to have some tension to avoid it warping.

I'm grateful to you that you've continued to hold on to that gorgeous instrument. It SHOULD be looked upon as you do, not just some kind of sale or bargaining fodder. We'll not see the likes of them again, at least not from a factory.

Thank you for the treat of giving us a look at it.

Yeah--I do. This is a 2007 Rickenbacker 360-12, made famous in the 60's by George Harrison and Roger McGuinn. I think they are going for $2400 or so these days. It is one of 5 guitars and 1 banjo that I own.

Wonderful guitar pics and stories.

I started playing at age 11, and coming from a musical family on my Mom's side it was a wonderful expirence.

I have 12 guitars in my collection and used to play most all of them. 3 were regulars on the gigs that I did for years in my own band and other groups that I worked with over the years.

Very sadly, I am unable to play any longer. Three weeks after this video was recorded, I suffered a stroke effecting my entire left side.

I lost the fine motor skills in my left hand and feeling on the entire left side of my body. No sadness, I am still here and able to live with what I have left. For that, I am thankful.

In the video, I am 3rd from the left, playing a 1965 Mosrite Ventures Mk IV. One of my favorite guitars. And for the sound of the '60s it is one of the premier axes of the era.

Listen carefully, and watch as our band plays Del Shannon's Runaway from 1961. Note that you do not see a keyboardist.

The man to my right, Andy, is using a Roland synth to do the organ parts and solos.

A long career in music, along with my job came to an end just about a year ago. No regrets, no sadness just good old rock and roll. Play on boys !

I've been playing for about 15 years now, acoustic and electric. I find that if a guitar makes you happy every time you pick it up, you'll keep picking it up.

About 8 years ago, I traded a Taurus .357 for an Epiphone Les Paul. It's the best sounding guitar I've owned so far. I still think I got the better end of that deal!

If that Tele is a Fender you did great, regardless of whether it was made in Mexico. I don't know what value the signatures would add to it, depends on how bad someone wanted it.

There is a clown out in Vegas that buys cheap Fender Squires and has various bands autograph them. He seems to do a pretty good business although I don't understand why. He prices these things from $1200 and up.

Well, the geetar came today, and it looks really nice. It is a MIM Fender Telecaster (I had a slight fear that it would be a Squire). Doesn't look like it was played much. The strings are old and rusty like they might be the original 1993 strings. I think it will clean up nicely. I'll have my son put new strings on it and play it.

I think the signatures are legitimate. It's the correct names for the members that made up the group in 1995. We found some pictures of other signed items on the internet and the signatures look the same. Who knows?

Anyway, a nice 1993 Telecaster has to be worth $250 with or without signatures. I'll let my son play it if he takes care of it.

My wife found a seller on Amazon (I think) that is selling pickguards signed by Collective Soul with a cheapie Strat replica. He wants almost $500 and it's probably a $50 guitar. He offers to put the pickguard on more expensive guitars.

Starting playing when I was in the 6th grade (I'm 58 now).

I've always played acoustic due to my style and not wanting to need an amp anytime I wanted to play.

In 1979, I picked up a Guild import from Japan. The name the guitar was sold under was the Maderia line of cheaper guitars, adjusted, distrubuted and sold by Guild. I had hot dots (electric coversion you can't see) put in mine when I picked it up. The model is a A-30M, a gorgeous blonde maple. That old guitar and I have been many miles together. I found another 2 years ago and bought it as well, it was like NIB. And, last but not least...I had to have an electric for the fun of it. I picked up an American Standard Telecaster in natural finish with a maple neck. Yeah, I love em'.

Sixgun's & Six Strings have been a way of life for me for over 45 years now.

Earlier this week I was hangin' out at a friend's Drum Shop where we were discussing a "fake" Ludwig floor tom that a customer had brought in. There was a drummer in there who heard us and mentioned that his guitar player had recently purchased a chinese made "Gibson." I can't remember the model but know it was a hollow body.

He said that the guitar player wanted to re-finish it to a color he preferred and when sanding it down he found that the body was made of partical board. He added that everything thing else on that guitar was a cheap knock-off and that the most "valuable" part was probably the Gibson nameplate, which looked exactly like the real thing.

We pretty much said, and he agreed, "What did the guitar player expect from a guitar made in China?"

This new Deluxe Player Edition is apparently Mexican-made, with American parts, as far as we can tell. He's wanted this model since he first saw it, and two or three years later he finally got it. Now if I could just get him to sell off a few............no 19-year-old needs NINE guitars! I am betting most of the older ones don't get played much from now on.

Ain't it beeyooteefull? I like how you can see the wood grain through the transparent finish.

Very nice guitar. I also like the transparent finish.

My son just sold a guitar, so he is down to 8 guitars. He's to the point that he'll probably sell, or trade, some of the guitars that he doesn't play before acquiring anything new. His latest purchase is a bright yellow Ibanez from the mid 80's. I thinks it's an RG of some sort. Apparently, it's a desirable guitar amongst guys playing metal. I don't know much about them.

I didn't intend to be a collector, it just happened. I ended up with a bunch of basses and some acoustics. And a Les Paul!

My guitar affliction is the main reason I don't have nicer guns.

I wondered who around here plays too. That is a good price for the Mex Tele. A new mex would be at least $400, and double or more for an American made one. The M in the serial # will verify if it's Mex. The weakest link is the pickups. If you replace the pickups & wiring harness with American ones found on ebay, it will sound as good an an American Tele. Most folks who grew up with vintage Fenders do not like the feel of the newer ones, because the necks are 1/16" wider, and have a flatter fingerboard radius.... has some benefits, but makes a Strat not feel like a Strat, to me.

I've been playing since 1975, and I guess collecting too, since I have approx 14 instruments, including the banjo, and bass.

I have a few Fender and Gibson electrics from the 60s and 70s, a few Martin acoustics, an Ibanez, Ovation, & Kramer aluminum necked bass. Have a couple of tube Marshall, Vox and Fender amps. Played in several rock bands, wedding bands, acoustic duo, etc. One of my bands did Gel, by Collective Soul during the 90s. Doing alot of fingerpicking around the house these days. Most recent tune I learned a few weeks ago was Emerald Eyes, an instrumental from the Jimmy Page Outrider album.

You Tele guys would love my friends B Bender. I think he wants to sell. I played it once when he got it. I'm not a Tele player but it played real well. I'd buy it if I didn't have more guitars than I play. I've been thinning the herd and am down to a few that I couldn't part with.
My old Vox Hurricane is been through Hell and back. When i got it the bridge was ripped out of the wood so I routed somd hard wood in and installed a Leo Quan Badass. with Seymor Duncan pickups.
My Hagstrom Viking pictured in my previous post is worn out and was butchered long before I got it. Oddly,The Hagstrom played the best for so many years. Great necks on the old Hags!!! Nothing like them.
Acoustics? Wow, I see some nice ones posted here. I have a Takamine. It's a keeper.

With only one I'm not a collector, but I think I may carry the gene. I still can't play the one I got last July worth a damn, but already I'm thinking that maybe there is room for more than one in the music corner with the Victorian pump organ and the kit virginal that I don't play either, though I keep them in good repair in case unanticipated skill should break out. I bet a good instrument is embarrassed to be played by a mediocre or even poor performer; if there are others to share the misery, any one guitar won't bear the brunt of the humiliation.

I can bend a couple of notes on a Blues Harp, but not good enough that anyone would pay me to do it. Or even sit still while I tried, for that matter.

Here's July's axe, a Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman that I gave myself as a birthday present. It's sounding better when I pick it up, but under my control it still looks way better than it sounds.

Wow. Did you get it from him? I'd love one of his mandolins. Of course, like both of your mandos, too. I guess for now I'll have to be content with my Santa Cruz.

I'm not a collector but I've owned a lot of guitars over the years. I currently have only one, a Taylor 814CE. Unfortunately, due to an arthritic condition, I can no longer play. Here she is.

My latest electric guitar purchase (last week) is a 1958 Gibson Flying "V" reissue. Korina wood. Between my son and I, we also have a Gibson SG Standard in Heritage Cherry, a few Strats including a Classic 60's Reissue, several Teles (two Standards, one Blacktop with dual humbuckers), a couple Les Pauls, a Peavey Raptor, Fender Jazz and Precision Basses, an Ibanez bass, and a Yamaha steel-string acoustic...

Amplifiers? Let's not even go there....

A guitar collector... yes, I guess you could say so

I love 'em all, but the Music Man Axis is just such a sweet guitar - desert island pick would have to be the natural Axis...

Oh, missed the acoustics...

Takamine EAN10C pictured, also have a Tanglewood (something or other) as a backup.

Glad to see this thread is still going strong. Some great guitars shown. I had posted a picture of my old Gibson Super 400 earlier and see the post is gone, but the very nice compliments are still here. Thank you both very much.
Here is my other old workhorse, Gibson ES 330 that I bought new in January, 1964. The fret bars are gettin kinda worn on this one.

I really wanted to see that one. I was at the Hard Rock in London and had the privilege of having my picture taken with a few nice guitars: a 1954 Strat onced owned by Duane Allman sn 0003, Jeff Becks early Esquire, Joe Walsh's '56 Strat, a Pete Townshend custom Les Paul and the Flying V that Hendrix played at the Isle of Wight. The only guitar I couldn't touch? Elvis Presley's Super 400.

I think we'll need photo-verification of this one!

I'm not really a collector but I do have one beauty. It's a 1966 Mosrite Combo model that I bought new. I must admit that I am missing the original Mosrite strap but the instrument shows very little wear and is all original and electrically fine.

Thanks Thiokol!
It was posted Tuesday during the problem period. I posted once, it looked like it posted, then it went away. I tried to delete to re-post and I did it again with the same result. Then I started getting the error messages. I could not tell what was going on and figured the whole thing wound up in never-never land.
Thanks again,
teesur.

I once had a mid 60's Mosrite Mark II. Like a complete idiot, I traded it for a used-up dirt bike in the late 80's. Sure would love to have it back, had a great sound. Looked just like the blue one shown HERE.

Well, since someone has to drive the bus while you pickers "moon" the crowd, here's my Gretsch 125th Anniversary jazz bop kit made in Ridgeland South Carolina (the arm has since healed)

And the "Mothership". Noble and Cooley CD Maples made in Granville, Mass.
N&C has been making drums in the USA since 1850.

We're headed to guitar lessons tonight with a new instructor. Several years ago, my son learned the basics from a guy that leaned toward folk type music. CCR was heavy metal for him. My son likes rock, so he lost interest with the 1st teacher and started teaching himself via DVD's, YouTube, etc. The kid can play some impressive riffs (Van Halen, etc.) and I have no idea how he learned the stuff. He's pretty motivated, so I think it will be fun to have him schooled by a professional that can teach him the kind of music he likes. My son definitely seems to have the skills (I don't).

cant say as I collect guitars per se, but I do play and have a few.
Since I play in church fairly often, and I am the most skilled of the guitarists in that venue, I am often asked for recommendations. So I find myself test driving guitars from time to time.
What cracks me up sometimes is when Im walking out of a shop and the proprietor says "Come in any time and jam out, we'll even plug you in " with enthusiasm.
Am I really that good ???

figured I'd put up a recording of some of what I did with (or perhaps to, depending on your point of view) my Martin acoustic.
mostly noodling around. I figured I should get on tape so I can torment myself with it later by trying to develop it a bit.
A bit long. If you get bored drag the slider to about the 2/3rds mark and ride out a little Satriani piece.
