If I were law enforcement, I'd carry both.
Urban or rural would determine which was primary.
It would not be at all unreasonable for a deputy to have a 44 mag wheelgun at his side. It's more likely he'd be dispatching a large and damaged critter in his duties.
Urban ... say .. Chicago PD ... I'd quit the first day if I couldn't have something belt fed.

You are correct sir. But, one must be there to understand what transpires in one. I digress. Training as you mentioned is 99% of the problem. One must train more than once or twice a year and many Cities, including my former employer felt that " qualifying WAS training. When informed that they were liable for their lack of training things improved. Additionally, the individual must desire to improve him or herself on the range and in any potential conflict or incident. You owe it to yourself and your loved ones to strive to improve your abilities and train as often as possible.

In case anybody is wondering, that pic of me with the Thompson, Mod. 58, and bloodhound (his name was Judge) was taken around 1970. Actually I think Louisiana Joe (my brother) was the photographer. Not sure. A friend had given me a couple of cases of Lake City 45 ACP and I checked the Thompson out to have some fun at the range. It had two drums and two stick mags and the barrel was a little warm by the time we were through with it. I won't mention the friend or where the ammo came from as I'm not sure the statute of limitations has expired. As for the original thread, I felt quite comfortable with a 686 plus that I carried until we were issued the Glock 22 around 2004. I didn't really like it until I killed a couple of deer with it.

Mickey,
The little key is a Smith&Wesson Cuff key.
No lock on this 686.
