If I was so inclined to hang out where the grizzly's live, at the very least insofar as a handgun is concerned, I would carry a Ruger Alaskan in 454 Casull.

I love to trek around bear country in the winter up here in the Great Northwest. In the higher regions, lakes start to freeze over long abouts October, and that is a perfect time of year to go foraging in our forests.
I have come to the conclusion that the best possible bear defence for that time of year is a can of peas and an ice saw. You see, what you do is, while foraging around a frozen lake, is go about 20 yards offshore and cut a hole in the ice, then open the can of peas and space them evenly around the opening. Bears are famous for being attracted to the little canned vegetable. If there is one in the area, it will head straight for the bait. When the bear walks up to take a pea you kick him in the ice hole.........
BADABOOM!

In a more serious vein I would go for a Ruger Alaskan .454. I dunno anything about bear country, but I figure in a close encounter I don't want to have to cock an SA.

Well, there are small bears and big bears. There are small calibers and big calibers. You do NOT want to wound a bear as they can get pretty nasty attitudes as a neighbor here found out the hard way when he shot one with a 22.
On the mountain, I want as big a caliber as I can get on the off chance I encounter a big big bear with an attitude.
My experience with bears, however, is they just want to be left alone.

I don't often travel in bear country,
but when I do, I prefer Smith and Wesson .460 Magnum...

When I was stationed in Alaska in the '60s, I carried a 458 for a while, but it was heavy. I switched to a Remington 760 pump carbine in 30-06. Loaded with 220 gr Silvertips, it seemed perfetly adequate for close up encounters with any bear I might run across. I still have the orignal box of 220s, with only a few missing. The 10 round magazine was much more comforting than the original Remington 4 rounder.
