Stocks numbered to revolvers
Revolver questions...
What year did S&W stop numbering their stocks to their revolvers?
Was it the same year for all models?

Is this really a dumb question? I thought I heard/ read that they stopped this practice sometime ago. Anyone?

Not a dumb question, I think it is a tough question.
I don't think anyone here on the Forum can give a definate answer unless they worked in the S&W wood shop. If I had to guess, I'd say that Magna grips stopped being numbered in the early 80's.

i think it was somewhat hit and miss...i have older guns with no numbers, while many are numbered...as mike ^ above mentioned early 80's seems to be the cutoff

I have wondered that too.
One thing I find interesting is on my 4" M624. The target stocks have a date, July 8, 1985. Never seen that before. It's especially interesting because that was my parents 25th wedding anniversary.

One reason for question...
I just bought (2) Model 19-4's from late 70's. Neither of the stocks are numbered to the gun. I am (almost) sure that the 98% one is original. It came with box and has either never been fired or very few shots fired. They are the correct stock for the period. So it sort of matters from a collectors standpoint. (Which I am.. albeit new )
I can't tell if the 2nd 19-4 has original stocks. They also are not numbered. But are the correct stock for the gun and they look aged appropriately for the guns condition. I guess in this case it doesn't really matter because I bought it as a shooter with no box and plan to put combats on it... or maybe some of those pearls I've been seeing!
So would it be safe to say if the guns are pre 70's they would definitely be numbered?
