Default The oldest gun you use

What is the oldest gun you commonly shoot or hunt with? For me it is my Dad's old Remington Model 11-48 in 16 ga. followed by my Sweet Sixteen both from the Early or mid fifties. Many rabbits and birds killed by those two.

1947 pre 17. Goes with me every trip to the range. Targets or tin cans you can't beat it.

Key phrase in the OP is "commonly use".

I have older guns, but I "commonly use" a K-22, pre-18, made in 1952.

I carry it squirrel hunting and use it for really close shots at bushytails in lieu of my .22LR rifle. It also gets shot a lot at the range.

My 1972 shipped M-19 and my 1970 shipped M-27. Both of which are a bunch younger and in better shape than I am.

The oldest guns that I have and shoot are:

1961 E. German Makarov 9x18.
1969 Ruger Single Six. 22 LR. 5-1/2" barrel.
1970 Colt SAA 45 Colt 7-1/2" barrel.
1972 Smith & Wesson 28-2 Highway Patrolman 6" barrel.

All of my other guns are from the mid to late seventies to now.

The 28-2 is my favorite out of all of these.

1906 Swedish Mauser. Took a nice whitetail with it a couple of years ago.

Edit: Merril, can you post a close-up of what looks like a butt pad of your Winchester 61? I've never seen a 61 with a butt pad.

Default old stuff

For handgun would have to be an old S&W 1905 (third change) target from 1911

shotgun winchester model 12, 12 gauge from 1925 or for lighter stuff a model 12 in 20 gauge from 1916

on .22's for "plinking"/ squirrels an old winchester 1890 from 1929.
If it's something more "formal" then a winchester "pre" A model 52 from 1932

Guess you could say I like the more "vintage" firearms..Oh, and Winchesters

Hunting: Browning Auto Five shotgun made in Sept, 1953.
Daily carry: S&W 1911 made in 2009.
I shoot a lot of guns that were made in the 50's & 60's for fun.

The oldest two guns I have right now that I carry around or shoot with are both from the same year. A gun that I carry all the time is this 1950 vintage M & P.

The oldest gun I hunt with is my 1950 vintage Colt Woodsman that was my grandfather's. This little gun has accounted for alot of game in its life. I have taken squirrels, grouse, a couple of beaver and some other game just since I have owned it.

The oldest gun I ever did hunt with though was an 1892 vintage Model 1873 Winchester in .38-40. I wish I still owned that gun. The oldest gun I ever took any game with was my Winchester Model 54 bolt action in .30-30 from 1930. I killed my first deer with that gun.

I have a Springfield 1903, serial number 810,xxx which was produced about 1918. It was rebuilt during WWII where a new barrel (Sedgley 44) and a "scant" stock were installed after which it was apparently not heavily used. I bought it second-hand from a fellow who got it through the CMP. Excellent rifle. First range trip I fired 100 rds. of mixed commercial loads through it. Average of all groups fired was under 2 inches. The last five shots fired were 150 gr. Win. Silver-Tips... which went into a nice 1 inch group. Very cool. It is a very fine rifle.

I shoot a 1902 1st on a regular basis. One 22 rifle we shoot a lot is a first year production Winchester 67 my Great Grandfather bought new. the shotgun I hunt with is a Hunter Arms 16ga which is probably 1930s production.

I have a take down Winchester m55 in 30wcf made in the late twenties that I take deer hunting every year. Also have a third model hand ejector from 1929 that goes too the range with a 329pd. Then there is the Winchester take down m97 made in 1911 that went on special details before I retired.

If I remember correctly, my Krag was made in 1896. It qualifies as a non gun under Federal law by being an antique. .30-40 Krag ammo is a seasonal offering, but is still offered by Remington and Winchester.

I own and shoot an 1881 trapdoor Springfield rifle...plus an 1886 Martini Henry MkIV..and a couple of BSA MkII rifles made in 1889.

Next newest would be a 1900 made Krag sporter I just got and a 1904 Swedish M96.

Oldest handgun I actually shoot would probably be a Colt 1917 made in 1918...I have older made handguns...but really don't or have not shot them.

I differentiate between "shooting" and "using". I occasionally shoot several late 19th century guns, but the oldest one I actually use is my M1911 Colt (mfg 1918). It has been tuned up for match use and I use it in the .45 stages.
(by "use" I mean having a reason to shoot it other than hearing it go "bang")

1879 Trapdoor

One elk, several mule deer, some antelope, and lots of nuisance critters. Never had to shoot one more than once.

Two original muzzle loaders, one shotgun and a P53 Enfield. I have several WWI mil surps and a 1917 Enfield that was sporterized before I got it. Newer guns are a 20s Colt PPS, a 2nd model 44HE and a 3rd model 44HE made in the late 20s. Also have an old Model 12 Winchester that my uncle, a WWI vet, bought sometime in the dark ages.

CLASSIII, that butt plate is simply a block of wood! Dad was 6 ft 5"s and he did it to all of his long guns for extra LOP. He was a big man when not as many guys as now was that big.

I have hunted with a 1911 made Remington Model 11 shotgun. I have used more regularly some "newer" models of the same gun made in the 40's. The 1911 one is in very good mechanical shape and has a LOT of life left in it, I just have prettier, more versatile ones to play with.

I shoot my own bunny fart .38 specials through this Model of 1905:

I forget when the thing was made but it's seen better days before someone bumper chromed it and then chewed on the steel some. But I still love on her and keep her well fed.

Oldest gun I actually use is this .30-40 Krag (deer hunting.) Serial number puts it 1898 mfg date.

I've got some other old guns I shoot occasionally. I actually use the Krag.

Winchester Model '92 chambered in 38 WCF; made in 1926. Iron sites, octagon barrel, half tube. The last deer l took was shot at 14 yards. (l fell asleep in my ground blind and the doe woke me up. I removed her pet collar and tag before l took her in to the check station! )

I guess my oldest would be my Colt New Army Model 1894 in .41 Caliber, mfg. in 1904. Like someone before mentioned, I shoot a lot of the old Savage pistols. Wonderful little marvels with no screws and almost as old as my Colt.

Not as old as some of the guns in the thread, but my everyday carry gun is a 1965 Model 27.

I regularly use my wife's grandfather's Remington Model 10 on the trap range.

The old Krag sporters probably still take more deer than most people realize. I'm on my second one after missing the first one I'd traded enough that I decided that I needed one again. The first one had been used by a gentleman in Wisconsin to shoot his yearly deer well into his 80s. Oddly enough I traded it to a forum member in Wisconsin where it once again is a (back up) deer rifle. I sometimes think that it must have wanted to go home.

I suspect that a lot of elderly Mosin Nagants see use too, some dating back to the Czar's days.

This year I used my made in 1950 Winchester Model 94 in 32 Special to back my buck in Wisconsin.

I also have a made in 1951 S&W Combat Masterpiece (pre-15) that I shoot on occasion.

I've got a S&W M 1905 H/E and a Colt Pocket Model M - 1903 in .32 ACP from around 1915. They both work FLAWLESSLY which is more than I can say about some of the new stuff my shootin' buddies bring down to the Range.

For regular use:

1. Original Pennsylvania caplock rifle, made about 1850 to 1860, .41 caliber. Fiddleback walnut stock with raised cheekrest, German silver buttplate, patchbox, trigger guard, escutcheons and thimbles. All original and in very nice condition. Patched .395 ball over 40-45 grains FFFg for about 1400 FPS. Very nice for snowshoe hares, blue grouse, turkeys, and ptarmigans. Any meal eaten that was taken with a 150-year old rifle tastes better than any meal bought at the store or restaurant.

2. Sharps 1874 rifle in .45-3-1/4" Express chambering (shoots .45-90 Winchester just fine). Seems to like the 405-grain RNFP cast bullet at about 1300 FPS, with which it will shoot nearly clean through an elk from end to end. A little heavy to carry all day.

3. Springfield trapdoor rifles including 1873, 1874, 1882, and 1884 variations. The oldest was found in the attic of a house I was renovating in the 1970's and spurred my interest. Lots of these old classics still around, and they are much fun to shoot with appropriate loads. Took a bull elk with the 1884 rifle about 25 years ago, uphill shot at the bull angling away from me, entrance wound just behind the left side ribcage, exit wound through the right front shoulder (about 4 feet of penetration). Mr. Elk dropped like a sack of rocks. 500-grain RNFP-GC bullet at about 1100 FPS.

4. Once a year or so I like to take two old pistols out for a few rounds. First is a US 1860 Colt Army .44, manufactured in 1862 and still working like new. Second is a Remington Navy model .36 caliber that will do anything today that it could do in 1861 when it was new.

5. Winchester 1886 Takedown in .45-90. Lovely old rifle that I enjoy very much, but it is just too dearly valued anymore to take out into the woods.

6. Winchester Model 55 Deluxe Takedown model, made around 1932, caliber .30WCF. Also very enjoyable, but too valuable to drag around the woods these days.

7. Winchester Model 62A, made 1940 and obtained in original condition with box and papers from the original owner. Perfect little .22 rifle for just about any use.

8. Winchester Model 1892 carbine, originally chambered in .32-20 but rebored and chambered for .357 Magnum about 1970 or so. Won it in a poker game about 40 years ago and still have fun with it from time to time.

9. Colt Model 1911 US Army, commercial model manufactured in 1914. Once per year it gets a couple of magazines run through it and has never malfunctioned in any way.

10. US Model 1911A-1 manufactured by Union Switch & Signal Corporation in 1943 (the year that company went bankrupt and stopped delivery on the War Department contract). This one was obtained from the son of the original owner, an employee of US&S during the bankruptcy and was taken in lieu of unpaid wages. I also have the payroll record showing the pistol given for wages due. Incredible bit of history there! (Yes, it still shoots just fine).

Some of us old guys like old guns.

I have a 1842 Harpers Ferry .69 musket, built in 1845. I use it in North-South Skirmish Association smoothbore matches.

I still shoot my great grandmother's .32 hand ejector.
Use it mostly for dog training. It's the first handgun I ever fired when I was 8 years old. Circa 1917. (The gun,not me)

Ditto here on my own Model 1903 hand ejector, made in 1916. It is one sweet shooting .32 S&W Long.

Since it is underpowered for centerfire revolver class, I shot it in an area steel match back in the fall, in the .22 rimfire class where you just have to hit the steel plates and such.

No objections, since the recoil of my .32 is more than the folks shooting .22s. I handily won the match too, with that sweet thirty-two!
