Default Had to put my dog down

Dorie was a fantastic dog. I found her at the rescue nine years ago and she has been a constant companion to me and my two boys. She has been slowing down over the last few months but didn't show any signs of health issues. She came in from the yard and toppled over like she had lost her motor skills and her back legs quit working. Long story short the Veterinarian thinks she has a brain tumor and felt it best to put her down to keep her from suffering. I am so lucky to have had her in my life and I feel good about providing for her for the last nine years. I will always miss my "Fat Girl", Dorie.

Default Sorry

I am sorry about the loss of your dog. I have loved a series of dogs over the last almost 40 years and I grieved over every one of them.
Here is a poem I found years ago. I send it to my friends as they suffer the loss of their "lovesome hounds". I'll hope you like it.
Austin

On the Early Retirement of Dogs

Dogs, in their job of being man's best friend,
die young in human years, retire to
a scent-filled place where well-fed pets attend
and lick the sores of mangy Lazari.
I have outlived, in order: Cole, the Cocker;
Morry, Dachshund; Gertie, Airdale; Jenny,
Collie; Smitty, Ridgeback; I've watched the dogs
of others die: Granny's shepherd Blitz;
Barney, her fox terrier; Aunt Happy's
Great Dane, Inge, a pair of scotties, Duncan
and Fife; my brother's Mike, from Mexico;
a neighbor's corgi, Keesh, who bit my father.
Aging with me now, the bloodhound, Cleo,
and pointer-spaniel, Dotty, who thinks I am
her pup. She watches to make sure I don't
escape, and licks me when I'm near. I'd almost
let her take me with her when she goes.
Her nose is sound enough to find the dead
I'd want to throw my arms around. God grant
me in the afterlife a home with gracious
hearth and grounds for all these lovesome hounds.

Condolences, friend. For some reason losing our dogs can be harder to bear than a lot of other of life's troubles. Be thankful for the time you had, and know that you did right by her.

Sorry about your loss. I know how it feels - I have been through it 4 times already. Every time I go through his I swear that I will not do it again.... but of course I do. We now have our 5th Golden Retriever and he will be 5 this summer. The good news is the love & comfort they give over their lifetime really outweighs the sadness in the end.

When you are ready, and that is something you will know, the best healing comes from a new puppy. The new pup is never going to replace you old dog, but it will be a different dog owning experience.

I am sorry to hear about your pet, you have my condolences.
Its not an easy thing to go through, I have been there several times over the years, but I have always adopted another dog. My life wouldn't be complete with a dog by my side

Sorry for the loss of your Good Ole Dog Pal. Having to put them down is a rough thing to do. But the time to do so does come.

I had to put Zoe (light colored Lab in pic) down almost three years ago. She was 12 and could not stand up or get up. I couldn't do the ride to the vet and have to deal with that. That would have bothered me bad.

So after giving it some thought I did it myself. Zoe never knew what happened and wasn't stressed out from the ride to the vet and having to deal with the folks there and that process...and I didn't either. It was best for both of us.

I'm so sorry, we went through the same ordeal a year and a half ago, it's horrible. We just adopted another 6 months ago, just keep her in your thoughts.

You performed the last, and hardest, and greatest gift of love you can for a pet. You rescued her, gave her a safe and happy home, and then you prevented her from suffering during her last days.

She will be waiting at the bridge for you.

When the hurt gets better, there is another wonderful hound out there looking for a job taking care of a human in need.

Definitely brings tears to my eyes. It's too easy to feel the pain felt all over again when even just reading about your loss. Sometimes I think dogs are the only one that know what true love really is all the time.

Im very sorry for your loss. Thank you for rescuing her and giving her the life and love she deserved. I have a 2 year old American Eskimo/Pomeranian mix who has come to be known as "The Monster" because of her mischievous behaviour. I could not imagine coming home and not having her there! I am truly sorry for your loss. Letting a family member go is always hard. Take consolation in the good years of her companionship and the knowledge that you gave her a valuable and comfortable life that she would not otherwise have had.

You absolutely did what was in her best interest.

Sorry for you loss. I'm on my 8th German Shepherd, the last three were rescues. Never gets easy. They are in a better place. Someday I'll see them all again. "There is only one best dog in the whole world, and every little boy owns him".

I feel your pain. A few years back i put down my blacklab SAM we had since a pup. He was a very loyal friendly dog. We took it really hard. But when they get so old, blind and a diabetic for many years we had no choice. His ashes and paw print are on our fireplace mantle so we'll never forget him.

We just got a yellow lab pup to replace him. I named him MAX thats as close to SAM as we could get. He's another loyal lab.

We tried to get an older dog from a shelter/rescue but they make it so hard. I figured if we rescued one and it worked out we'd get another.

Truly sorry for your loss. I had to put Dusty, my 12 year old golden retriever down almost 2 years ago. It still brings tears to my eyes thinking about him. He was a great dog. I told myself I'd never go through that again and yet, at my feet, is a year old husky and a year old chihuahua/bichon mix.

It hurts because you have a heart and you're good person. If you weren't, you would have never given her a home. Just know that the best and happiest years of her life were the ones she spent with you and your family. Thank you for the second chance you gave her.

These were my babys, Min-Pins. Rudy (Male) and Tinker (Female) I lost 1 1/2 years ago and 4 1/2 years ago.
Now buried between my deck and heat pump, with their own shared headstone.

And heres my replacement Min-Pins, Ginger (Female) 4 1/2 years old and Hofner (Male) 1 1/2 years old.
Both just a spoiled as my first ones !

Ginger liked to scratch the drywall which I have yet to fix -------

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have 3 rescued dogs and I dread that day. So unconditional love, such treasures, and such a hole in your heart when they leave you for good. Sounds like you already know to remember the good they brought, and the love you gave. That's all that really matters. Rejoice for the comfortable life you gave her and the treasured memories you will always have.

The Power of the Dog - Rudyard Kipling

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
But when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years that nature permits
Are closing in asthma or tumors or fits
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers, or loaded guns.
Then you will find--its your own affair
But--you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will
When the whimper of welcome is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You still discover how much you care
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em the more do we grieve;
For when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

You have our deepest sympathies. It is a painful part of having our animal companions and we wish you the best.

Words can not fill the sorrow in your heart, so I will not try.
RIP Dorie.

Thanks everyone, I went to work and had a pretty good day. Had a hard time when I walked in the door since my howling buddy was nowhere to be seen/heard. It is going to take a while to feel better but I can't help but feel blessed I had the opportunity to be her friend. My kids are wearing her tags in her memory. I am sure I will be ready for another friend in the coming weeks/months. Eating dinner without having to wrestle for my plate was an interesting experience, she used to put up a pretty good fight by pushing my arm with her nose. She always got her fair share but I guess I didn't feed her fast enough. Thanks again.

I'm sorry for your loss also. I had to put my black lab, Hoss down and it sucked as bad as anything has in my life. Know they are running where the temperature is just right and they always have a fresh bowl of water and a big bone to chew on.
