Good for the land owners. I don't think much of these shooting at released birds types, but it is legal and on private land. People have a right to privacy and just because you think you've found a way to skirt that right does not give you a pass IMO.

I'm not sure what to say here. This type of stuff always amazes me. If you fly something like that low enough to be legal (below the FAA's legal jurisdiction over private property), then it's fair game (no pun intended) - within the bounds of shooting safety. On the other hand, these idiots may be operating a UAV in FAA airspace - which is a whole 'nother issue. All that aside, I'm getting tired of this group or that telling me what's good for me. Incredible!!

Wonder if they would be interested in sending up a few of those over my "dove field" this fall......I'm not a very good wing-shot but I think I could hit that thing & part of the fun is just getting to shoot at something!!!

Those blades pose more of a danger to birds than a bunch of beer drinking weekend release shooters...

They picked up the pieces of their plane and had lunch at KFC to discuss their next mission.

Save the pigeons? Are you kidding?

Good for the property owners. If they want to shoot vermin OK. Lucky it was only the pigeons.

Spy drone? A blind man in a snow storm could spot that contraption!
Appears to be made out of eight RC motors, a video camera, a broccoli rubber band and some Lego. Can you say "PULL"!

Shot down, eh? Imagine that... What's the bag limit on these contraptions? Do we need a "guns & loads" for spy UAVs thread?

Not a day goes by without some news of some screwball special interest group attempting to meddle with the peaceable enjoyment of somebody's life. Our "land of the free" has plenty of it's own versions of the Taliban, mostly, thankfully, not as violent or dedicated...

So some of you wing shooters help me out here. Do you use conventional lead shot, copper plated shot, or bismouth? What size? Big like #2? Maybe even goose shot or BB? Where do the pellets have to hit to disable that contraption? Just take one through the battery? Will it fly with one or two engines disabled? Just asking. And does that group allow visitors to shoot? Especially at the drones? Could be a good fund raiser for them.

Oh heck no. I'd have had them arrested for trespassing if they set foot on my land to retrieve their contraption. You *might* be allowed to fly it over private property, but you CAN'T trespass to recover it if it crashes.

If you invade the privacy of my property with some kind of camera contraption you should expect that it will not return...and don't bother to come looking for it.

Knowing many of these "good old boys" from Erhardt, I am surprised that they only shot the helicopter!

I wonder if its insured for #8 shot? So that is what Vegans consider stealth technology? It looks like something you would use to videotape elephant porn on the Serengheti.

Seems to me like there should be some aspect of castle doctrine to cover trespass of airspace.

Just for the record, nothing in the article said that the camera drone was flying over the private property of the shooting range.

I'm more interested in whether they used #7.5 or #8; and did they need a modified or modified/full choke? I would think that Skeet or Improved might be a tad wide.

To kick it out on something that flies like that........those blades would fall to 8 shot. Helo blades are VERY fragile, while tough at the same time. Toy helo blades are just fragile. But, to get a solid hit at 50-60 yards, #2 thru T shot, 3" magnum will put it down, most instantly.

Glad they straightened this little problem out.

Here the odds would be pretty good that the SHARK people would be charged with interfering with a lawful hunt, assuming the flying machine would spook the birds. I'm still trying to figure out what they wanted the Governor to "step in[to]," given that the hunt was lawful. (Resists urge to make provacative comment about Nikki Haley's looks....)

It's a pretty safe bet. That's no RQ-170 and effective shotgun range is 50-60yds at best.

I belong to a upland hunting board and this same group pulled the same stunt at the club of a fellow that posts on that board. This was in Pennsylvania.

The thing came down and the group sued them. What they didn't know was that one of the club members was videoing the helicopter as its operator flew it into a tree, thus saving someone a shell.

"An animal rights group says it tried to launch a remote-controlled aircraft to take videos of a pigeon shoot in South Carolina, but the aircraft apparently was shot down."

Was this supposed to be a joke or am I missing the serious note in there somewhere...?

I think #4 buck and as many times as you can before it hits the ground. Once it hits the ground you probably have to stop shooting at it unless one of those blades are still moving.

I'll bet you could sell tickets to that at my club! What a hoot!

"We decided to send the copter up anyway. Seconds after it hit the air numerous shots rang out."

Good shootin' boys.

They might want to try something that flys a little faster next time just to make things sporting. Maybe hook the camera to an actual pidgeon?
