Honestly, I have no idea why I like multiples. One for each hand, I guess.

I liked my duty gun so much I bought two more just like it. Some things are worth having duplicates of. This way I can take my daughter and son shooting, and we can all enjoy a Model 64 without having to share!

I agree. Criminals should not have access to high quality weapons. The more Smiths we get off the street the better!

They are much better off in our safes.

J frames and K frames were both available in models ranging from 22 rimfire to 357mag. Guns at those extremes have totally different "personalities", and are used for quite different purposes.

Simple really. The K-frame magnums were the finest revolvers to come out of S&W. There won't be any more as nice, so I purchased enough to last me. Regards 18DAI

I always try to get one nicer than the one I have the thought being that I will sell the lesser one. That's how I ended up with nine M1 rifles. When it comes time to sell I just can't do it. I think I have one of the smaller collections here. 14 S&W 3 Ruger 3 screws 1 Colt 1911 2 Colt peace makers 3 Uberti black powder revolvers 12 assorted rifles 1 shotgun and 2,000 rounds of M2 ball ammo for the M1. Think of it this way, we are helping to keep guns off the streets and if we can save just one child by keeping these evil guns off the streets it is worth it. With the M1 rifles I tell my wife I didn't by another rifle dear I saved a piece of military history for future generations to look at.

Well this was informative. No I don't have the trained eye so thanks to those for the lesson.

To those that think I don't get it. Collecting isn't for me I don't feel the need to have more than 1 or 2 of the same model. so good for you and your collecting.

I thought of collecting one each of model 19.
But, as I started collecting, I began to realize how many guns are involved to get a complete set of each one, and gave up

Gosh, I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe I'm just nuts about pre war 22-32 targets. They just attract me. Show me a S&W & I'm attracted no matter what caliber.

J Rich

That is a perfectly good question.
Some guys like to collect "one of everything". Nothing wrong with that...

However my answer is, I am not a Collector, I am a "User".

So, I have, over the years identified, what I want/need to use.

For me it is mostly 44 Mags. So instead of having say 5 different S&W's, in 5 different calibres, I prefer to have 5, 44 Mags... As those are the S&W's I USE. OK I need/use other calibres as well, this is just an example...

There is nothing wrong with being a "Collector", and there is nothing wrong with being a "User", or a combination of the two...

Bottom line is, just get the S&W's you use/need/want.

I'm not a collector, but there came a time during my years of using/carrying guns that the concept of having a "pair and a spare" of your primary self defense handgun seemed to be a good idea.

Depending on climate/mood/lunar phase, I can be found with either a 5906 or a 908 close by. Using the 5906 as an example, one of them I have is used/carried quite a bit.

My second one is a "backup" to that first one, and is identical. This second one is in case the primary one breaks, or is at the shop, or for whatever reason I may not have the first one around at the time.

The third one is my "spare", and spends most of its life as a "safe queen". This one is also identical to the other two, and is on stand-by in case something horrible happens to the other two (you never know!).

(OK, I actually have a fourth 5906 as well, and doesn't really fit into my "pair and spare" theory, but that one was offered to me at such a good price I would have been a fool to pass it up )

Same principle with my 908 - I have a primary, a backup and a backup to my backup.

Do I really need all of these? Well, realistically, probably not - but it is my money and I'm having fun so what the Hell, why not?

Come to think of it, I do have a little extra cash, and the LGS does have a nice looking 5906 in the display case - hmmmm....

Thumbs up

All these fine and well stated reasons for various multiples
boils down to something simple.

Most of us are insane but functional and we can act on our impulses and desires to satisfy an addiction.

Pretty much like the rest of this planet, and relatively harmless.

Beats the hell out of hard drugs or wanton women, at least as far as survival rates.
