When you are eating out of a can you are down to the dregs anyway.

Thumbs up Manwich? Heinz? Meh...

Both of these are OK in a pinch, but if you want to try the best Sloppy Joe mix out there, you've got to try Jumbo's Sloppy Joe Sauce. It's a little company out of Fargo, ND, but they're popping up in stores all over the upper midwest.

If you can't find them near you, check out their website as they ship nationally.

Sloppy Joe: chopped green pepper
chopped onion
finely chopped garlic
80/20 ground beef.
one small can tomato paste
one small can tomato sauce
chili power

Cook peppers and onions until onions are translucent, add meat cook until meat is about done add garlic, add tomato paste cook together for 10 mins. add the tomato sauce, chili powder, simmer a few mins. you may want to add about a 1/2 teaspoon sugar to reduce acid from tomato.

server on toasted buns or bread with chips, cole slaw and cold beer.

this is the only thing I cook, this and hot water, My wife tells me I don't know how to make ice.

I never cared for Manwich...I always thought it seemed too sweet. I don't know that I ever had the other. As others have said...I preferred what my Mother made!

I don't know if she added anything, but for the spices, she used a McCormick Sloppy Joe packet. Just add the spices to ground beef & tomato paste. She passed about 5 years ago, and I suspect it had been 5 years or more before then that I'd had one of her Sloppy Joes. Haven't had one since. I never did make any myself. Maybe I'll look for one of those McCormick packets, and see if I can make them taste like the ones she made.

I tend to prefer the Manwich, and make it once in a while, cook it up, add a nice thick slice of cheese, and a little hot sauce. I prefer a glass of ice cold milk instead of beer.

My recipe:
Cook 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef with one onion (diced sorta fine), Bell pepper optional. A teaspoon of diced garlic, salt & pepper to taste, a dash or two of red pepper flakes, dash or two of Tabasco or Texas Pete's hot sauce. When cooked, mash with potato masher. Add about a cup of catsup/ketchup, a couple of tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, a teaspoon of Wright's liquid smoke. Serve on a burger bun or sourdough hoagie roll.

Serve with Mining Camp Potatoes or garlic French fries.

Mining camp potatoes:
Fry one pound of bacon until almost crisp (one inch dices). Remove and drain. Slice two Yukon Gold potatoes per person (more if fried potato fiends). Sauté 1 teaspoon fresh garlic and one onion (or two shallots) in bacon fat until soft (I cut the onions large)==toss potatoes in bacon fat until covered. Cover skillet and fry until crisp, minimizing disturbance but don't let them burn. When fried, add bacon and garnish with green onions. Variations include fresh oregano, rosemary, jalapenos, chorizo instead of bacon.

Manwich vs. Sloppy Joe

Had not tried either of them until recently.
Manwich was on SALE! I bought several. Thrifty Hoarder ...

After trying the Manwich I returned the rest of it.
Taste was too much like Ketchup.
The sandwiches I get at the quick stop gas and go place are MUCH BETTER.

Will try Sloppy Joe in the future. (but only one can for a test)
