Default Hunt's Manwich vs. Heinz Sloppy Joe

So I rediscovered that I still like this since I haven't had it since I was a kid. I bought the Manwich Original but they had a couple of other options and then there was the Heinz Sloppy Joe. So now that I'm reliving a childhood favorite...

Which one is/was your favorite?!?!?!

I really had no idea how much I would still enjoy this....

Go with Hunt's. The other one puts money into the pockets of the Heinz-Kerry bunch. That's plenty of reason enough for me.

I'd have to check the MSDS first. I agree with DeadAye about making it from scratch.

I may own some Heinz stock in my 401K, who knows.

I've never had the Heinz, so can't compare, but I agree with Paladin. That's why I switched from Heinz to Hunts catsup.

I should have never read the "Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. I have never trusted processed food since. Knew a guy at Wright Patterson who would get on a frenzy and have homemade sloppy Joes for all three meals for months at a time.

I try not to let politics dictate my every purchase , but in the case of Heinz , I will.

Actually , the Heinz Foundation does a lot of wildlife conservation efforts.

When I eat a sloppy Joe, I get it from one of our local BBQ joints. Mucho better than anything from a Ketchup (or Catsup) company. So I vote "gross".

I remember as a boy when things were rough eating just tommatos on toast and that wasnt bad. Mix up a little burger in it and I still wont turn it down.
Years ago I was on the atkins diet where I was eating nothing but meat. I am here to tell you I found out I could eat burger longer than steak!

When in Iowa, I'll eat Maid-Rites (except from that dump on the North end of Waterloo). Otherwise, it's strictly home-made sloppy joes for me.

When I was a kid Mom kinda had a home made recipe that was much better than the canned stuff. It's just hard to beat home made!

I have tried store bought, but not at all tasty to me. Homemade is the best. My Aunt Bud was locally famous for her Sloppy-Joe recipe, which used bottled chili sauce. Tried to make some S-J recently; and the chili sauce is greatly changed from the 50s [what isn't?]. Not to mention using 93-7 beef instead of maybe 75-25.

Regards,

Dyson

Talking

Sloppy Joe's out of a can?

Isn't that something akin to "salsa from New York City?"

Just kidding . . .

With an 8 year old grandson, I am rediscovering some of the "treats" from my youth, too!

I detest ALL "sloppy joe" type sandwiches.

If I can't eat it without fear of it falling on the issue of "Small Arms Review" that I'm reading, I'm not interested.

Open face toasted buns with American cheese, thin sliced onion and homemade Sloppy Joe mix. UHM! UHM!

OK - Y'all don't know me that well, but I can give you my recipe for toast and pizza ---- Oh, and instant oat meal. That about covers it.

I do make pretty good instant oat meal if I do say so myself

I make my own, and the family loves them... and I'll admit that I cheat. I brown about 1 1/2 pounds of hamburger and 1 pound of ground venison. Two of the small cans of tomato paste, then two packages of spaghetti sauce mix, and about 3/4 the amount of water. Simmer that for a bit, then toss in a good handful of quick oatmeal, let that cook up for a couple minutes then slap it on some toasted buns and serve it up with some tater wedges baked with a sprinkling of seasoned salt on them... yeah, buddy, I think I know what's for dinner tomorrow night!

Brown 1lb. hamburger, and drain fat. Add 3tbl. of politically correct ketchup and 1tbl. yellow mustard. Stir in 1 can of chicken gumbo soup. Bring to temp and enjoy on a bun or bread serve with a side of tater-tots and a cold American beer.
Actually, sounds like good "Oscar Party" fare but don't forget the

Central and western PA has a great regional brand made in Tipton, PA. (near Altoona). Del Grosso Sloppy Joe is exactly like good homemade. No corn syrup. Good stuff and inexpensive.

I found a Del Monte Sloppy Joe. No idea if it's Heinz in a different label or what. Cooked up the Manwich Bold last night. It's got a little more spice kick, but that's about it.

I'm confused on the "home made" option. If you still open cans of this, pouches of that, and bottles of something...

Sloppy Joes rank neck and neck with my mom's tuna casserole for first place on my VERY short list of stuff I won't eat. Waste of good hamburger meat if you ask me.

I voted "gross" - #1 rule of thumb is never to shop in the middle of a supermarket - stick to the sides & back and you'll be good.

Not so, as Heinz is owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway in partnership with a Brazilian Private Equity fund.

Guess you'll have to find another target to air your political agenda.

I'd like a #18 with cheddar with a #22 on the side. My wife will not let me share her secrets for either with anyone without me paying a severe fine in withholding. For myself homemade is the only way to go.

I agree with you.
I hate to see a recipe that has "a can of creamed mushroom/celery soup" in the list of ingredients.
If you're too lazy to slice a few mushrooms or celery stalks and heat some milk on the stove, you might as well eat out.
And they taste lousy, too.

Guess you'll have to find another target to air your political agenda.
Maybe you should find another forum to target your Troll threads. Why wake up a 2-3 year old thread for that non-sense...troll.

I've always loved sloppy joes. (But I have this nagging feeling that we called them something else when I was a kid.) Never had Heinz that I remember, so Manwich is definitely my favorite! And scoop up the dropping on my plate with taco chips!

A little marinara, a little BBQ sauce, some hot sauce, throw in the hamburger. Voila!

Actually he is right about Warren Buffett buying H.J. Heinz Co one year after the thread started. But I will not get into any type of political issues as I don't know his but do know what I like to eat and eating it once or twice a year doesn't seem to make a difference to me, I figure my NRA donations will offset any negative effects.

New guys can't respond to older treads seem odd to me.

What seems odder is it seems you can still vote in the pole.

Whichever one, Hunts or Heinz, top it with a hand full of chopped jalapeņos for a "Sloppy Jose". A huge improvement. It's Hunts for me, BTW. The Heinz-Kerry bunch give me the creeps.
