Headed back to the Stan
Got a call last week, can you be in Bagram in three weeks?? I am now working on my seventh year of being deployed. The answer I gave, "I did not unpack from my last year trip, I jjust got home last September. The reason I found out for the sudden deployment was the other guy who was going turned up postive for TB!!!!!!!!!!! T

I'd say you've done your fair share!
Thanks for your service and stay safe over there.
It sounds more hairy now in the post-victory-turning-the-country-over-to-Afghans-phase than in the open-warfare phase...

It takes a special kind of American to step up when called upon, and not try and pass off the responsibility.

Say hello to my son, Peyton (I PMed you his info). Take care of yourself over there. My son said he met a cute Puerto Rican Leutenant the other day. A GIRL Lt., that is! I think it was Bagram where he said they have a bizaare where locals sell stuff. I asked him to keep an eye out for any exotic bone big enough for pistol grips but he couldn't find any. Be careful and good luck. Not to mention a big THANKS!

The Army needs to do some hiring. You are doing good things there, but 7 deployments is excessive. Thank you for your sacrifice, and be REAL careful. The brass messed up and they burned some Korans, so folks are reacting with their usual fervor, rioting and shooting people. As Iggy said, watch yer topknot!

Thanks for the kind words and thoughts, I am reading the Army Times and with the upcoming personnel cuts I will certainly have more computers than soldiers to use them!!

Thank you for your service.
Bagram is a nice base, and it had a good bazaar back in 2004-2007.
I was at an RTC in Kunduz for three years.

Peyton, thank you for your service.
“May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.”
And finally, always watch your six.

Got to the airport Saturday morning, threw all the stuff on the conveyor belt and then got pulled aside. "Sir, do you have any ammunition in this bag??" Of course I said no, twenty minutes later after dumping the contents all over the table we found two .327 cartridges taped to a gunsmith receipt!! My wife was with me and helped repack the 50 lbs of stuff into a 40lb book bag!! She gave me the look (you know what that looks like) and asked why those were in the bag!! I claimed "Old Timers Disease". I am in Camp Atterbury Indiana doing the mandatory training before flying Saturday to Kuwait.
The worst thing about the bullets is they would not give them back to my wife when she left the airport.

Got to spend some time with the soldiers that work "at the pointy end of the spear". I was fixing computers for infantry soldiers. While in the shower trailer shaving, I could not help but notice the young soldier next to me trying to do something with his back, his arms were too short to reach what was bothering him. I finally asked what was wrong and could I help, he said one word "Shrapnel". The soldier said a bomb went off close to him and he got "sand blasted by the stuff". I asked if he had the body armor on and he said yes, but it did not provide good shoulder protection. The hospital leaves the wounds open and the stuff works out of the wound.
Our conversation made me realize what brave men and women our nation has produced. I told him to take care and thanked him for his service.
