Do you want the penny?
It happened to me again today. I went to the KFC drive-thru and after I paid the girl, she asked "Do you want the penny back?"
Other times, when I had one cent change due me, they don't even offer it....like at gas stations, etc.
I'm not a cheap-skate by any means...I tip my barber, the pizza delivery guy, even the kid that changes my oil at Valvoline.
But, I have to admit that I find it annoying when asked if I want the penny...I think that employees in stores should just give you your correct change without asking.
I'm sure that this is a generational thing...most of us here probably remember when you could actually buy something with a penny.
Just wondering...has this happened to you and what do you say?

Never happened to me. If it's pennies I usually drop them in their penny bucket for the next person.

A penny saved is a penny earned.
Mind your pennies and nickels, because the dollars take care of themselves.
That's my two cents.

I understand it costs the Govt. more than a cent to make a penny. They are trying to get rid of the pennies anyway. Don't know the answer but the pre 1982 pennies are still worth more than a penny in copper.

I'll always take the penny change.... throw it into a gallon bucket at home. After a while they do add up.

I dislike being asked at a resturant when leaving cash in the tab tray/booklet, if I want change.
I'll tell you we are good when you pick it up, if not bring back the change!

I toss them in a jar in the bedroom and then when it gets full it adds up to a tank of gas (well it did) either that or we use it for my son.

I want the penney, and should't be asked.
What really ticked me off was a restaurant here where the waiters often took forever to return with my change. I think they hoped that I'd get tired waiting and leave without it. Or, maybe they just stood around in the back talking.
It cost them in tips, and I finally quit eating there.
I tip well, but when warranted. And pennies do mount up!

My dad was very conservative. Once he was standing in front of a store talking to a friend, jake the barber and noticed a bunch of pennies on the ground and started to pick them up. Dad wondered where they came from. A young guy was there and said "Ya cant buy anything with them, we just toss em". Jake popped off, "One of these days ya will be back here looking for them!"

I think it's tacky for them to ask if I want my penny. Perhaps they've encountered some customers who don't want the penny back, but if there's any doubt, they should just give the customer the proper change.
Coins? I actually don't use much cash anymore unless I encounter an establishment that doesn't take credit cards. I pay for most things with my credit cards, and I pay the bills in full every month. I could purchase something for $1.29, for example, and that would go on the plastic. That way, I don't have to deal with coins as they're just one more thing to worry about when going through the annoying TSA security lines. Another advantage is that I have a record of every transaction; important to me because I'm figuratively a penny pincher.
I've even traveled to foreign countries without touching the local currency. I carry $1 bills for tips (if the local custom warrants it) and I have yet to find a bellhop that wouldn't take the familiar US dollar, and it doesn't always have to be $1 per bag. The rest of the foreign expenses, including ground transportation to/from the airport, or even departure tax, may even be billed to the hotel in some countries. I still have a cache of foreign coins from past trips and they're essentially worthless: I have no idea where many of them came from, there's no forex for coins, and I don't remember to bring them along when I return to their country of origin.

I've never been asked, but I have been on the other end, telling them to keep the change because I don't want to fool with trying not to drop it when changing hands (them to me), shuffeling it around from my left hand to my right, trying to find a place to put it in the car, or trying to get it into my pocket, etc. Just keep it.
Maybe there are enough people like me in your area that the clerks have learned to ask knowing they can't make everybody happy.

Durn right I want the penny. Save them up a pretty soon they make a dollar.
Itchy and a friend do a lot of walking in the local mall. They never fail to pick up a handfull of pennies that the kids just toss away.
Itchy's split this winter is sittin' in a gallon jar and it's over $30 so far.

When they ask me if I want the Penny-I ask them if they would want their penny if I was the one asking.
Fight back. Use dollar coins .50 cent pieces and two dollar bills.
When the total is $16.27 give them a twenty, 6 dimes 11 nickles and twelve pennys including that nasty green sticky one you pried out of the dried coke puddle on your dashboard. Make them give you a $5 in change.

I don't think it is proper for you guys to wade around in the fountains picking up all the "wish" coins, I hope you take them boots off first.

I dont think my folks ever owned a credit card. Awhile back I was visiting a aunt and uncle and they told me they never had one either. To my knowledge most of my large family of aunts, uncles etc all never had payments or credit cards all lived in their means. Nowdays you about have to have a credit card to call ahead for a motel room. Thats about all I use one for.
I dont consider myself a religious fanatic, but from my early religious teachings I still am affected by old time preaching I heard about a cashless society that was comeing in relation to "666", mark of the beast etc. Supposedly in the end times we get so dependent on credit cards and a cashless society that you literaly wont be able to buy or sell anything without takeing the mark of the beast. Also the way the bible tells it, once you do your soul is lost!
The deal is it will be the goverments way of totaly controlling you at the end times. Think about it. If there is a record of every transaction, and you cant circumvent that because there is no cash to opperate with, they now know every detail about you, where you are and been, every item you buy and sell etc. It all will be on record.

I like my change back. I don't mind at all picking up pennies, done it all my life.
Too late to change now.
I hate the restaurants that you pay at the table, they always wind up getting more money for tips and such. They figure people won't wait or bother. Just a nitpickin dislike of mine.

And when you do you better hope the electronic register will tell them how much to give you back, 'cause sure as heck they won't be able to figure it out.

I have replied "only if it is rare" before. Most of my pennies go into the change tray next to the cash register. You see a lot of those in a State that doesn't have sales tax. I don't see them when I travel.

My nephew (Charlie's Son) always gets $2 bills so that he can confuse cashiers. Some have to call a manager to tell them what to do with a $2 bill.

I save all of my change. Usually there is about $70 in a full pint size mason jar. I save up several pints and then I have money to fill up the gas tank on the Harley several times. I could go a lot farther a few years ago than I can now. Maybe I'll move up to quart size jars.

My dad used to say, "If you save a nickel here and a dime there, before you know it you have fifteen cents."
I enjoy giving the cashier dollars and coins in such a combination that I get back fewer bills and coins as change, say, I'll get a quarter back, or a five dollar bill back as change. It really confuses some folks.

You wouldn't believe how many times I've seen someone walk out of a convenience store and dump their change in the parking lot. I have no problem picking up pennies, nickles, etc. I put in my "save for ammo jar"

I always pick up pennies.
I will usually give the exact change amount if I have it, or at least the pennies to round it off.
They are about worthless and should be stopped. That would make my old WHEAT pennies more valuable ( I accepted $40.00 of them , all rolled, for some reloading supplies in 1989). We use them when we play tripoly.

As long we are on a rant..how about waiters who ask you if you want change after paying the bill? Just bring it back and I'll decide what to leave!

I always get the penny back, but I'm a bit of a coin collector, so I want it back to check it out.
It pays off from time to time. I've gotten a few rare bills worth more than face value. Of course, gotta know what you are looking for
The other stuff? Into the change bucket at hone. When it fills up, I cash it in. Last time it was over $200

How about the delivery guy? When you give him a 20 for an eighteen dollar pizza, and he puts it in his pocket and turns around to walk off.
Makes me want to jerk a knot in his head.

Only reason I like change is to find the old stuff, which has increased the last few years. If it's a panhandler asking for .15 or .25 cents he gets my .2 cents worth every time.

what aggravates me is when they ask if you want to round up for a charity. Giving to a charity is fine but I do not like constantly being asked. Wally world on the weekends is the same thing, there is always someone looking for a donation.
Don't get me wrong I give to all the kids sports and fund raisers but it just is a pain constantly being asked for a donation. They ask you on your way in the store and again on your way out. Just put your sign and bucket out there and I will give, but I do not like constantly being asked.

Last summer, bought a coffee and when I got my change, I heard the sound of silver coins in my hand. Looked down and saw two silver quarters. Immediately pulled out a $10 and asked for change in quarters.
Walked out with 7 silver quarters that day. Cashier thought they were "aluminum or something"
With the economy in the tubes, I find a lot of silver quarters dimes and even nickels ('42-45) in change recently. Seems everyone is digging through those old cookie jars.
With that going on, how can you not want change back?

My brother once threw a penny in the street in front of the small town grocery store and my uncle made him go get it when the traffic slowed.
My brother has never forgotten it and grew up to be very thrifty.
Now for the new pennies, I have drilled holes in a few and used them as washers. A washer the same size costs about 7 cents.

I once knew this ol gentleman, he was a millionaire many times over, this was back in the day when a million bucks was sumthin.
This same man kept tellin his coffee drinkin friends bout he was gonna build this here park for folk to come and picnic, with little rides for the youngins, etc...
All at a dime a head. Everyone laughed and made fun of his idee.
The Monday morning after his litt'l grand openin he rolled a wheelbarrel full of dimes into the local bank...
They said it took two tellers three days to count them dimes.
He carried a load of change to the bank every Monday for the next fifty years.
I've personally saw this feller pickup lost pennys at every opportunity.
Yeah, I want my penny!
Su Amigo,
Dave

Or as J G Bloodsucker would say, "It's your money and I want it now!"

I may not pick up a penny but will run across 4 lanes for a wheel weight.

Years ago, in leaner times...if you can believe that, my wife and I would take on extra jobs to help pay the bills. One of those jobs was cleaning a laundromat after closing each night. We would collect jars of change that folks left in the washing machines and we picked up every penny that was left on the floor. Sometimes it was as much as we were getting paid. Today we will still stop and pick up every penny we see. My son thinks we are nuts.

But, but without pennies what would I do for 500 meter targets?

Who is exaggerating just a bit, his range only goes 300. ;->

Having a penny for every transaction you ever made in your lifetime would be a BIG PENNY PILE.

My previous job used to entail working on the highway.
The space next to the curb were a great space for change to collect, especially the left lane of the highway. I used to take a stroll at lunch and get $5-10 worth of change every day. Helped pay for coffee/lunch.
Also, the drains from highway overpasses were great for collecting paper bills...especially after a rain. Would routinely find $1 and $20 in there.
How do you lose $20 out the window on the highway??
