Default Live near shooting

We live in next townover. The kids shot were getting ready to leave for the Vo-Tech Campus called Auburn Career Center. My daughter is a Senior there and knows the kids involved. It's hard to know what sis really going on as the news reports are behind and he kids information is not very reliable. My daughter heard through her social network that one of the kids died but that is not confirmed. The shooter used an unknown brand .22 auto pistol.

Hopefully all will survive, this is another case that armed staff and teachers could have responded to in seconds instead of waiting for LE.

Thank God this shooter was not as determined/skilled as a terrorist would be, things could have been much worse.

Two college mates (including a long-time roommate) grew up in Chardon. The former roommate still lives there. Gonna be interesting times in Ohio, especially since a bill was just introduced to eliminate the mandatory cop-inform statute for CHL.

My daughter, a senior at the Auburn Career Center in Chardon just informed me that a second student died of wounds from this mornings shooting spree. Unconfirmed but probably true based on her sources. Let's keep praying for students and families.

The media seem to be saying that the shooter showed "signs" of being troubled. Apparently, no one reported anything. Now watch the anti-guns groups froth at the mouth. One thing is clear...the police "practiced" for such an event but all they can do is react to the incident, not prevent it. You have to feel for everyone involved. These events leave no one untouched.

This is a real tragedy, as has been all the other school shootings.

Preventable? I do not think so. There could have been 100 trained police officers there beforehand and they could have done nothing but shoot down the shooter after the damage was done. Damage may be lessened but nothing is going to prevent such incidents, especially making guns illegal. There was a lot of laws broken by the shooter and breaking a few others is not going to bother him.

What sort of penalty can the youth get for such a crime in OH?

This is all in everyone's imagination! Can't happen.
This is a gun - free zone!

Will this stupidity never change?

I grew up in the area. Personally if the gun used belonged to one of the shooters parents I sincerly hope that parent faces charges as an accessory before the act. Simple fact is that if you have a "problem child" and have guns it's your absolute duty to keep them seperated. I also think it's a parents duty to make sure that their children get counselling when they are this far off track.

My wife heard on the news that the kid had made threats against the victims a day or two ago. No one thought he really meant it, I guess.

He was kind of a misfit, and his targets were kids who had been bullying him.

I would agree with you except I have dealt with parents of such kids. My SIL is one of those type parents. She refuses to believe her son does anything wrong (31 yr old, never had a job lasting longer than 6 months, four DUI, still facing a charge of carnal knowlege, married three times, more speeding tickets than can be counted) and she bails him out because it is always someone else's fault. Parents think their kids are either perfect or has been put in a bad light by others. Look at all the times parents go on tv saying their children were just misunderstood.

Scooter, the sad truth in many cases is that the kids parents are drunks, druggies, or mental cases that set the stage for the kid to follow in their footsteps with no adult guidance or anything even close to a decent role model. It's tough enough for good hard working parents, that really care, to ride herd on their teen age kids and keep them from straying into trouble. Kids left on their own will often make very poor choices.

As I understand it, the shooter lived with his grandparents and sister.

Gun Free Zone = Great Place for a Deranged Person to go on a Shooting Rampage.
I really don't understand why folks can't figure this out.

I know this sounds callous but I will continue to buy guns as fast as I can afford them because this type of tragedy is just what the other guys want to take our guns away. Just remember what happened after Port Arthur shooting in Australia.
I live just a few miles from the school. The stories I am getting from the kids is this teen was very intentional and had murder in his heart.
He would have found a way no matter the laws.
I wish the teacher would have enough moxxy to standup for their 2nd amendment rights and arm themselves in the classroom.
It's a sad time in our community right now.

Yes - this is my county - the Sheriff and I frequently chat and we've lunched together.

It was last year, I think, that he and the high school staff went through drills about exactly this kind of scenario.

6 shot - 3 dead - one minor wound - 2 hospitalized but recovering - if not for those drills this could have been much worse.

And from the earliest interviews, it's been clear that this is not a "street gun" kind of community - that the kids are almost all familiar with guns through hunting. Geauga County (the next county east of the county that Cleveland is in) transitions from a bedroom community on its western edge to a rural community as you head east.

Details on the weapon (said to be a .22 semi) and the motivation won't come out until trial, per the county prosecutor this afternoon.

From the bits and pieces of student interviews I’ve seen it seems like the ones that followed the duck and cover plan were targets and the ones that ran were relatively safe. Eventually I hope someone that actually cares about school safety takes a serious look at these events. I’m sure an unarmed teacher chasing the armed shooter out of the building was not on any “plan” but in this case it worked.

It has always been reported in all school shootings that the shooter was a "troubled" kid.
Whether they were disliked or bullied at school,or just unpopular for some reason,or whether their troubles stem from the home environment, there are always signs of mental issues beforehand.
I know. I have had a troubled kid. It's a sad state of affairs but the other students and the teachers are in contact with them constantly everyday.
I know that teachers are not psychologists and should not be expected to be,but there are always signs and teachers should be trained to recognize these signs and recommend intervention by professionals before it comes to a tragic event
like many of these have over the last years.
Parents and teachers should be able to readily see when a kid is not normal when compared to their peers,It's not that hard and there are measures that can be taken early enough to help them, with proper training in recognition of behavior that might eventually lead to an incident of this kind.
Facebook posts, veiled threats, and general discontentment are easily recognized warnings of things to come.
It is a primary responsibily of parents, but in an unstable home environment, it falls into the lap of others to initiate action to get help for these kids.

UPDATE:

From Will gun owner in Ohio shooting be held accountable? - US news - Christian Science Monitor - msnbc.com

The story claims the weapon was a .22lr Ruger Mark III "target pistol". It doesn't mention which actual model of Mark III it was.

The story also goes on to discuss that the owner likely won't be charged in the state of Ohio. The kid stole the gun from his uncle's barn.

Well that's one good thing anyway. Looks like the little coward may be held accountable for his crimes in this case.

Malignant narcissist + unlimited publicity for multiple murders = mass shootings

There's simply no longer any doubt. The more publicity these degenerates get, the more shootings there will be. They LIVE for notoriety.

It's like using bloody fish guts as shark repellent. You might as well be "punishing" Dracula by making him drink blood.

Why would someone keep a gun in a barn? I am not keeping any of my guns in a barn, They stay inside temperature controlled buildings.

Does anyone feel the uncle should have charges brought, if it is true that the gun came from his barn?

I think this is akin to drunk driving, unintentional but criminally stupid, and if you fail to secure your guns from minors, you should be criminally liable.

As far as I know every barn I grew up around or worked around as a kid had a firearm in it. Usually an old single shot 22 or 410 for shooting rats and other vermin.

Another example of a small caliber round having a deadly though not necessarily immediate effect on victims. The media continues to use revolver in describing a Ruger semi-auto pistol. There is no excuse for not securing a firearm at all times. The negligence of the grandfather contributed to the act and he will have to live with that fact for the rest of his life. It's not like the troubled family history was a secret.
