Default Anyone know anything about anaphylaxis?

I think I'm getting an education on it....

On the 7th, I went to Wendy's and ate a cheeseburger, fries and a Coke. As I was eating, I was reading our favorite forum on the iPad. I had a meeting across town, so I stopped by the restroom and went to the car. As I sat down, I realized that I had to go BACK to the restroom RIGHT THEN. I literally ran back (made it, thank God), but it was a violent case of diarrhea with some pretty powerful cramps. I started thinking that something I ate didn't agree with me. After a few minutes, the palms of my hands began to itch, then the soles of my feet, and I got incredibly HOT. Not a regular itch, but one that you'd want to scratch with a chainsaw. By now, I was red as a fire truck. After being bent double for a while, I thought it might be good to sit upright for a little while, and everything turned purple and I didn't have the strength to sit up anymore. I wrapped my arm up in the handrail and doubled over again. Eventually, I regained some strength, and saw a puddle of sweat on the floor. I was very thirsty by now. I decided it was time to leave the restroom and get some water, but after I got myself put back together and my belt buckled, I was exhausted. It was sit down or fall down, so I sat back down. Soon, I either gathered enough strength or got thirsty enough to go back to the dining room for water.

A few minutes after I got some ice water and sat in the dining room, I got cold. Not normal cold, but chilled to the bone and shivering uncontrollably. I went to the car, and fired up the heater, and about 15 minutes later, I was better. I didn't have the strength to drive home, but I thought I could make it to my office (about 3 miles). When I got there I was worn out, and it was 4:45 PM. I hung out there and napped on the floor until about 7:30, then went home.

The next day was ok. I didn't dare eat lunch. When I got home, I ate tomato soup, soda crackers, and a cheese sandwich.

The next morning (the 9th), I felt great. I went to work, had a good lunch at a meat & 3, and went home. I was fine at home, but fatigued. I decided that I'd have the same thing for supper, but then I thought that grilling the cheese sandwich would make it even better. It was, until about 30 minutes later... I had another episode. This time, after the first restroom visit, and the onset of the itching; I knew what to expect. I went to the kitchen and took a Benedryl and made a big solo cup of ice water (smart move). I sat down in the recliner to rest (bad move). I got woozy and everything started to turn purple, then I felt the urge to get to the restroom NOW. I didn't make it. I collapsed into the bathroom floor. About 15 minutes later, I had the strength to climb onto the throne, and after 30 or so more minutes, I began to feel alive again. The chills hadn't yet started, but I was expecting them, so I showered, then ran a shallow tub of hot water and waited on them. The chill phase came and went, I dried off, dressed, and returned to the recliner. This episode lasted only 2 hours.

I went to the doctor the next morning. He did a lot of blood work and gave me an antibiotic. I lived off water and a can of soup at my uncle's house after work. I'd wait a couple of hours after I ate before I went home.

On the 16th, I had another 2 hour episode (used the Benedryl again). Unfortunately, I skipped going to my uncle's and went straight home. Called the doc the next day. He was baffled.

On the 19th, I had another episode at my uncle's, but I took liquid Benedryl at the onset. I bought the liquid thinking it might get into my system faster. This time, the storm passed in only 45 minutes.

Called the doc the next day and told him to either shoot me or help me... He made me an appointment with a local allergy center.

I went to the allergist today and was tested for about 75 potential allergens, and I didn't react to any of them.

He is convinced that I had a powerful allergic reaction to an as yet unknown trigger. He told me that the Benedryl is probably the only reason I'm sitting here typing right now. He instructed me in the proper dosage of liquid Benedryl and when to take it, and he set me up with Epi Pens and instructed me in when and how to use them. I have a follow up appointment in 4 weeks, and instructions to call him when/if I have another episode. This is miserable. I have lost 18 pounds since this adventure began because I'm afraid to eat.

The doctor wants me to eat and keep a log of what I'm eating and when.

I know I wrote a long boring book, but have any of you ever experienced anything similar? Any advice on narrowing down the trigger?

This sounds like a really bad case of food poisoning that's lingered. Or you have an allergy or have gotten sick with some bug.

I hope you get it sorted out soon. This sounds really terrifying.

Fast food places scare me. Just looking at who works at most is a sobering experience. Maybe someone there spit in your food or something. Or, maybe you got some bad beef.

What are the symptoms for E. coli disease?

The initial hit sounds too fast for food poisoning, so an allergy has to be favourite.

I have spotted one common factor in your account. You first had this happen at a burger joint where the grill the meat. With your attack on the evening of the 9th, you said you decided to grill the cheese sandwich. Do you oil your grill in any way, and if so, with what. Are you in the habit of eating a lot of grilled food that has been in contact with whatever you put on the grill?

I suspect you have developed an allergy to some type or types of cooking oil. Back in England my Dad had to stop going to a particular fish and chip shop in our town as they changed something in their recipe that set off his stomach, although nothing like yours. We suspected the oil for the fryer.

Good Lord, Rawhyde! That's awful. Sorry I have nothing but sympathy and best wishes to offer. I sure hope you get it figured out quick. And I would not eat out alone until you do. Seriously. Sounds dangerous.

Good luck.

Rawhyde:

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I hope this gets sorted out soon, and you are back to normal. I think it is definitely something you are eating and/or drinking. Your body definitely doesn't like whatever it is, and it is trying to eliminate it from your body as quickly as possible. I agree the common element seems to be the grilled foods you ate that preceded each incident. What kind of cooking oil did you use when you grilled your sandwich? I'd contact the burger joint you ate at and ask what kind (type and brand name) of cooking oil they use. Also, until this gets sorted out, I'd stay away from the tomato soup as it is acidic and could exacerbate your problems. Your allergist may put you on what's known as an "elimination diet". This is where they put you on a very bland diet (white rice, mashed potatoes without gravy, etc.) and gradually introduce (one at a time) new foods until they either identify the causative items, or clear them all. Your food diary should include everything you eat and drink until this gets sorted out. If you eat a salad and use a salad dressing, I'd suggest writing down the brand name as well as in: "tossed green salad with Kraft Thousand Island dressing". I'm also wondering if it is a peanut allergy - did you use peanut oil when cooking? Did they grill your burger and use peanut oil? When you meet with the allergist, why don't you ask them if they can check you for a peanut allergy first?

I'll keep thinking about this, and hope you get some answers soon. Please let us know what happens.

Hang in there, I know you'll get through this soon.

Regards,

Dave

I don't have any advice or thoughts on what the cause is that has not already been stated.

Just wanted to wish you a quick resolution and peace of mind and body. Sure hope you will be OK.

Ask your doctor about Celiac disease. It is an intolerance of gluten (mainly from wheat products). It is greatly under-diagnosed.

The definitive diagnosis is with a biopsy from the intestines, but if the symptoms continue a three or four day regimen of gluten-free eating can tell a lot. If you are symptom free after the gluten-free days, then you definitely want the biopsy done, as gluten-free eating is a huge burden.

Swelling of lips, tongue or throat? Any respiratory constriction? Can you enlarge on "seeing purple?" Any other visual problems, like severe light sensitivity, inability to focus at particular distances, or hallucinations? Accompanying headaches of any intensity, or located in a specific area (behind eyes, base of skull)? Hypersensitivity to sounds or odors?

Have you been exposed to industrial chemicals in recent weeks? Bought any new clothes? Changed soaps or household cleaning supplies? Made any new friends or enemies? Have you had any insect or spider bites that took a long time to fade away? Do you take any OTC or prescription medications that leave you wondering if they are really doing their job?

I'm one of those guys who don't rule out zebras if they hear hoofbeats in the distance, so I am wondering if this is truly a conventional anaphylactic reaction. I'm not even sure it has to be food-related, despite the seeming association with meals.

Forty years ago I had an episode very much like what you describe. It came over me in early morning soon after getting out of bed. I called it food poisoning just to put a label on it, but I'm still not sure. It was a memorably bad six hours out of my life.

I carry an Epi Pen because bees kill me, and I have been heavily allergic to some pollens and mold spores my entire life. I am at least passingly knowledgeable about allergic reactions and other reactions that may look allergic but are simply reponses to toxic stimuli. I'm sorry to hear about your problems, and I hope answers can be found in short order. Holding good thoughts.

I am using Blue Bonnet margarine in a frying pan to make the grilled cheese sandwich. (our family has used Blue Bonnet since I was a small child) I have also learned that Wendy's has altered their French fry recipe. The last episode at home was about 30 minutes after eating pinto beans and cornbread and about a half dozen garlic olives (I was snacking on them as I cooked). The episode at my uncle's house was preceded by a meatball sandwich from Subway (plain).

I think it is some type of cooking oil or preservative used in processed foods, but nothing certain yet.

As they say - I feel your pain -- Literally

I've been going to an Allergist in Gadsden, AL (about 4 hours one way from here) in desperation - No one around here seems to have a clue.
I put drops of phenol and formaldehyde (!) under my tongue once a day and give myself a shot of something for general allergies once a week --- So far I'm not seeing much improvement. (2 weeks now)
I go back in 2 weeks for a round of food allergy tests (takes two days) so maybe.....

GOOD LUCK! I hope that your doc can help you!!!
This is NO fun.

You can reach a "tipping point" where your body reaches a point where it says "OK Fool, enough is enough", and reacts violently.

My wife developed an allergy to corn. She went into shock out on the ranch. It was fast and exciting trip to town including slowing down to let a Highway Patrolman to catch up and get ahead of us to escort us into town and the hospital.

Over the years with a little descretion, she has overcome it.
I have the same reaction to wasp stings. I give them a lot of room.

You can probably determine what it is with a series of allergy tests.

It is normal for your body to develop an allergy if you use something way to much for way to long.

Its been said before but to reiterate... In the journal write down everything even the ingredients you are using. Keep in mind that allergies are not always food related but can even be something as simple as the shampoo that you car detailer used on the seats (Thats just a random example)

So make sure you think about everything you are exposed to on a daily basis and everything that you touch, wear, breathe as well.

Yes your episodes have been hectic but definitely not the worse possible. That Epi pen should become part of your regular carry items... Gun, wallet, watch, keys, phone and EPI PEN!

I know the thought of injecting yourself in the thigh with a big needle is scary but a worst case scenario attack may cause your throat to swell shut and you can pass out or die.

(Don't mean to scare you but want to be honest so you know how to react and prevent it)

Also, Don't be afraid to call 911! Having worked in the healthcare industry for a while now, I see a lot of people abusing the emergency system. The reactions you experienced are a perfect example of when to call 911.

I'm happy to see that you've come a long away from being to weak to stand to now being able to share your experience! I wish you the best of luck in getting through this.

Alcat testing is used nowadays. When I had a food alergy I went on a diet of rice, rice cakes and water for one day, and added foods until they found the offending food (eggs).

Google: Alcat testing.

ALCAT - Food Allergy / Intolerance, Chemical & Gluten Sensitivity Testing, IgG & Casein Test, Chronic Fatigue, Arthritis, Asthma, Diarrhea & Obesity Treatment

I am surprised the doctor did not take a stool sample and test it for the bacteria that causes food poisoning.

Testing a stool sample is the only way to confirm food poisoning.

True....
If it is bacteria in the food, the reaction time is usually 12-24 hours..

If the food has been chemically contaminated.. ( somebody spilled bleach in the ground meat) or the food is just rotten, the odds are you would not get it past your nose..

I'll go with an allergic reaction..

either way.. get well soon.. and get to the cause..

My 11-year-old son has anaphylaxis. He has been extensively tested for allergies by a very good asthma/allergy doctor in Lincoln. We even spent the time and money to take him to National Jewish in Denver for a week. Their conclusion? They had no clue, but complimented our physician in Lincoln for his thoroughness.

He carries an Epi-Pen everywhere. His episodes are random and often occur at night. We've only had to use the Epi-Pen twice.

It's incredibly frustrating to not know the cause of the problem even after spending thousands of dollars on testing.... Maybe your situation will turn out to be something simple. Good luck with it.

And gluten. Even cheese cubes are often packed with flour to prevent them from sticking. And flour is used as a thickening agent on many sauces. And Burger King put wheat flour on their french fries to help them keep crispy--but I think they stopped that.

Gluten intolerance (Celiac) will explain the gastrointestinal issues, but not the allergy symptoms.

See a gastroenterologist.

Have you considered poisoning from pesticides? Some of the chemicals accumulate in the body, especially in body fat (and don't get filtered out and eliminated by kidneys). Several exposures in a short period of time could gang up on you.

You mentioned several meals prepared in oil, or highly processed. and the olives are particularly suspect. Chemical contamination of foodstuffs at fast food restaurants is not unheard of.

I have had milder but still startling reactions to some nuts exported from China. I am pretty sure it is pesticide residue, especially pesticides banned in this country. The same type nuts from California cause me no reaction.

Please look up "Organophosphate poisoning" and see if it sounds familiar.

BTW, margarine is not as healthy as real butter, in fact it is one molecule away from being pure plastic.

Wow. I hope it's not Organophosphate poisoning. That is rough on its victims. Some of those symptoms are familiar, but I always have severe itching of palms and soles during an attack. (sometimes the itching spreads, but it always begins and ends with the palms of my hands and the soles of my feet)

Thanks to all you guys for the well wishes and suggestions. This has beem a harrowing experience. Thankfully, I have made it through another day without an attack. The allergist gave me some pre-measured Benedryl liquid to keep in my pocket and an Epi Pen.

I know the Benedryl helps decrease the duration and severity of an attack, but I'm really dreading the next one. I don't yet know how well or how quickly the Epi Pen works, but the doctor assured me it was very fast and very effective. Both are with me at all times just like my watch, gun, keys, pocket change, etc.

When the doctor told me "You're damned lucky to be alive." and "You probably wouldn't be here if you hadn't started using Benedryl on your own."; it really stuck in my mind.

This ain't something to mess around with, but we still haven't figured out what the trigger is. The only way is to let another attack happen, then analyze my food consumption log. I'm working to make it easy by having a Boost in the morning, a pack of peanut butter & cheese crackers for lunch (or vice versa), then eating supper with my aunt and uncle. I just don't eat alone. I'm no captain fitness or anything, but I've lost 18 pounds since this has begun about 3 weeks ago.

I recently developed eczema on my pinkies, right index finger and right knuckles....doctor couldn't figure out where it came from...I tried steroid creams...helped a little...then I gave up milk (since I'm a bit lactose intolerant anyway)...once I got rid of dairy, my fingers got much better.

First, I don't for a moment doubt that you were very, very sick. Someone was watching over you.
I go with food poisoning. I have had a reaction to food poisoning similar to yours withing 20 minutes of eating the contaminated product.
I have had anaphylaxis before. I am violently allergic to seafood. If I accidentally ingest any, the first symptom is an itching in my ear canals. About 3 feet down. Next is an iron band around my chest that stops all breathing unless I force myself to breathe. No more Primatine Mist available, I'll have to get an epi pen.

Rawhyde, I got this today from my friend who is very up on this sort of thing due to her children's allergies.

"Dave, I will forward to my friend who is. Nutritionist. If she doesn't know no one will but in the meantime he should get some very strong probiotics and drink lots of water with sugar free electolites- I use ultima replenisher from wholefoods. He is going to be very dehydrated. I will let you know what my friend says ASAP"

I'll post as soon as I hear back....

Thanks a million, Sip.

I had a mild to moderate attack today after lunchtime. My entire intake so far today was a Coke, a pack of Lance Honey Peanut Butter Captain's Wafers around 10 AM, and a Boost Drink at 12 PM. The attack started up with diarrhea. A few minutes later, I had another bout and the itching began on the palms of my hands and soles of my feet. I walked into a co-worker's office, and she said that I looked red in the face and asked if I was OK. I told her that I thought I had an attack in the beginning phases and took 50 mg liquid Benedryl as per my doctor's orders. I decided to give the Benedryl 15 minutes to work and was sitting on ready with the Epi Pen. Within 5 minutes, I could tell a positive difference, and 15 minutes later, I was ok but a little drowsy. I wrote up the entire list of ingredients for everything I ate in a file on my iPad and called in the episode to the doctor's office. I took off a little early from work and went to my uncle's place to hang out for a while. I am beginning to have confidence in the ability of liquid Benedryl to act in a decisive manner against these attacks.

Funny thing is, I've been drinking the Boost for about a week now, and there have been no problems with it until now. I have been eating a pack of Lance Crackers each day as well, but I usually eat the orange crackers with peanut butter instead of these particular ones.

I'm pretty sure it isn't the peanut butter causing this, because I have been eating it all along. I think it is some barely pronouncable trace ingredient in these processed foods that's the cause. I hope I can identify it soon and learn to avoid it, whatever it is.....

Good job rawhyde. We are all rooting for you!!

Definitely save the epi pen for an instance when you are feeling like you are going to black out, stop breathing, can't move etc. Pain and itching is not enough to jab your thigh with a needle. Lol.

Have you considered consulting "Doctor House?" To the best of my knowledge he's never been wrong. LOL.....

Rawhyde, I'm bringing this thread back because it feels a little like an unfinished tale. Did the attacks stop? Did you ever identify what was likely to be causing them?

I see you are still posting, so if problems still exist they must be less serious than a lot of us once feared they might be. I hope you are well, or at least a lot better than back in February.

My daughter has Celiac. My son has several food allergies. He is allergic to peanuts, all dairy, and all fish. Once he touched a piece of catfish to his lips and did not put it in his mouth. His lips swelled up.

The advice about the food diary is a good one. You can eat something for years and get to a point where you body reacts to it. My son eats only lean meat cooked, not fried. He also eats a lot of veggies. He is 35 now and his total cholesterol is 124.

My daughter found out about her problem at the age of 35. She now eats where gluten free menus are available and does OK unless she ingests something with gluten in it.

If I had the problems that we are discussing, I would try a gluten free diet for a while just to see if it works.
