Default PPK/S Owners: Advice for A Left handed Guy

I love my reliable little Interarms PPK/S .380. The safty is excellent but I'm left handed. what's your advice on the safest way to carry this thing? I'd like to treat it like a revolver with no safeties to deal with and just carry it chambered with the safety off but that concerns me with this gun if dropped. I'm not talking concealed carry all the time but just in a coat pocket around camp or whatever. Also, I was surprised this great shooting little gun didn't have a half cock, not that I'd rely on that as a true safety. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Hi Wyatt - I've carried mine loaded, chambered, safety off & hammer down for years. Never had a problem. Use just like a revolver, just pull the trigger. Fine little gun - one of the best!!

Hammer down on a live one, safety off. That's how I carry any double-action automatic, whether Walther, Beretta or Mak. The purpose of that "safety" is to lower the hammer. Once the hammer's down, take it back off.

What everyone has stated above, load round, decock carry away.

I don't think using your index finger is wise, if I were a lefty I would swing my thumb around if you carry with safety on. You'll have a better grip on your firearm.

By the way, nice looking Walther.

Love my S&W Walther PPK

Me too. I mostly carry my 6906 these days, but I never worried about my Walther PPK/s, which I often used to carry in a coat pocket, too.

The odds of a true accidental discharge is VERY small.

If it happened, it would be because the pistol was dropped muzzle down, HARD, on a hard surface. So the risk to you or bystanders is VERY small.

There are great many semiautos that lack a firing pin safety, including all of the 1st gen S&W semiautos, past AND current production Browning High Powers, and pre Series 70 Colt 1911's. Many 1911 clones do not have a FP safty, to this day.

Yet, you never hear of people being shot by the millions of these pistols still in use, all over the world.

I had the PPKS. I don't remember that the safety would lower the hammer. Is that accurate?

Yes. And it's very smooth and easy to handle for being so small. If you're right handed.

I just looked at the manual and my memory must be bad. But surprisingly they strongly recommend that the pistol never be "staged" with the trigger only partially pulled prior to releasing to the sear.

Same here, always ready when you need it. Carried a .25 auto that way for years until I saw a show on TV where this guy shot a carjacker 3 times in the chest at point blank range (maybe 4-5 feet) and the carjacker walks over to the guy doing th shooting and take his gun away from him, knocks him down and was going to shoot him but the guys wife started screening and atracting attention so the carjacker jumps in the car and takes off...... cops got the carjacker, all lived ... but made me think about a BIGGER gun. If I ever have to shoot someone I want them to stay down. not take my gun away and beat me with it. Now I have a .380 acp but looking for a .357 mag. As long as you know its loaded, chambered and hammer down and you treat it as such should be fine. Never leave it laying around I keep mine in my pocket 24/7 except when shooting or cleaning.
