Default Spam Spam Spam Spam....

I really like Spam but my wife hates it. My mom used to put it in spaghetti instead of hamburger. It has a great history starting back in WWII for our troops overseas. Heck, I even keep a sizable stash in case the "Big One" hits. A can will go a long ways if needed and they are cheap. The heck with Sea Rations..oh, they aren't called that anymore. makes for great breakfast fried with eggs.

Anyone have a recipe they would like to share other than tossing the can of spam in the trash?

There is nothing like cooked Spam and macaroni and cheese. Just be careful because the whizpops that come later can knock a buzzard off of a trash truck.

Mom would try to pretend it was a ham. Slice the top and put in the cloves, made a brown sugar glaze, the works. I was little and didn't know any different. It was the food Mom put on the table so it was eat it or don't eat at all.

But I had an uncle who was in Italy with Mark Clark. Spam was not permitted in his home. Said he'd never, ever eat Spam again.

When I was growing up my Mother would fry spam and chop it up and mix in with macaroni and tomatoes and red beans. She called it slumgullion. It sure was good.

I'm with you on the spam musubi - we also called it "spushi". A SGT with the 412th Engineers over in Afghan made it for us and I absolutely loved it, got my wife to send us supplies from the East Coast - a quicker trip for sushi rice and seaweed paper to Kabul than from his home in Hawaii. Can't say enough about it. Also like to add pan-sauteed spam to noodle soups, very good too.

Still a spam lover. Fresh out of the can on toast with cheese and mayo, or fried with eggs. Diced in an omelet, macaroni or mixed with shredded potatoes and cheese in a pita.

Part of my original survival plan, case of spam and a thousand rounds.

Default A national dish

IIRC, Guam natives are in love with the stuff. Our troops in WWII had more than they wanted, as mentioned eariler. I suspect that SPAM is an acronym for Sliced Pressed Ham. I can see if you never had it and then the stuff became very available, it might just be better than fish, coconuts, taro root, and yams. If somebody has better information, please correct me.

I usually just heat it up in a skillet and serve with two (usually canned) vegetables and Dijon mustard.

But now that it's been mentioned, I may try the spam and eggs route, too. I know it's a classic.

I have a Spam story: Some years ago, the cans of smoke-lavored Spam had a scene with Spam and eggs frying in a skillet in a woodsy setting. By the skillet was a Randall Model 3 knife, the usual version with leather handle and aluminum butt cap. Six-inch blade.

I thought there might be a good story behind that, as an ad studio usually wouldn't have a Randall benchmade knife to photograph. So, I contacted Hormel (Spam's maker) and W.D. Randall, Jr., who was then still living. I got a good article from the effort. Bo Randall told me that the knife belonged to the project's asst. photographer, who just happened to like good knives. He chose the Randall because it suited the scene perfectly. But he got nothing extra for the loan of his knife, and Hormal sent Randall quite a few empty cans of the Spam. He eventually gave them away.

Some of you may have read my story in, Knife World. Gosh, that was further back than I thought.

Smoke-flavored Spam no longer uses that scene on the can, but I do eat a fair amount of Spam, usually the sort with 25% less fat and salt. It probably has more preservatives than are really good for you, but if one doesn't overdo, it should be okay. It beats starving if your meat budget is limited!

My son said that the natives on Guam eat a lot of Spam, and I hear that it's popular in Hawaii, where the natives have some interesting recipies for it. I was told this by a girl from Georgia (not the US state), who looked up Spam when I mentioned it, as she wasn't sure what it is. Once she saw photos, she realized that they have a similar canned meat product there.

This topic appealed to me. I think I'll go heat up some Spam, with Ranch Style beans and some potatoes or spinach. Yum.

Which wine goes well with Spam? I suspect that a good Gewurztraminer or a Sauvignon blanc, or Chardonay. The French often serve white Burgundy (Chardonnay) with ham products. It's pretty salty, though. That's hard to get past.

ADDED: I was typing this as another member posted about the Guam connection. My son was there maybe 12 years ago, and they were still eating it a lot. But I feel sure that member mwtdvm is correct; they've probably been eating it since WW II.

We still eat Spam on occasion. In fact, for the longest time my kids called it canned bacon! Slice the Hickory Smoked Spam thin and fry like bacon, served with rice. Mmmmmm.

Well..you are from WA so I take it that ya know what the "Big One" is. It's not a big poop...it's the big 8 or 9 on the rector scale(earthquake) and all stores are closed or sold out within an hour or two. If ya need something to eat....just let me know...cause I'll have a ton of SPAM to share!

The ONE TRUE way to cook Spam.
Cast iron frying pan on an open fire. Charred on both sides. Leaves enough grease behind to fry the hashbrowns and the eggs.
This along with the other classic camping fare means people at work will leave you blissfully alone for the rest of the week!

Last time I had left over Spam I gave it to the cat.
She sniffed at it, and then went and ate the dry catfood instead.

Make up a box of Kraft Dinner per the instructions then mix in a can of corn. Slice the Spam into six slices and fry it on both sides. Arrange the Spam slices on edge, spoke fashion, in a casserole dish. Fill in the spaces between with the mac/corn mix. Sprinkle liberally with parmesan cheese and bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

And then you have food.

Aloha,

Hawaii is the Spam eating Capitol of the World.

When Hormel wants to test a new Spam product, Hawaii.

Spam is made a Lot of different flavors. Even Hot n Spicey. For

Guam and Maybe Florida.

There is a dedicated Spam Museum in Austin,Minnesota.

Believe it or not, Spam will go bad. Can Will Swell badly.

I know, because I keep several Cases on hand for Emergency here

in Hawaii. The swollen cans were at least 9 years OLD. I told

Hormel and they sent me a bunch of coupons for Free Spam.

My Wife(from Minnesota) never ate Spam until she married me.

Now she Loves the stuff.

I love the Smoked Spam variety - da bomb! We use it as a substitute for bacon. Microwave it until crispy. Good stuff. Mac & Cheese with Spam is also a favorite.

A few years ago the wife and I went to "Spam Fest" in Austin, TX. It was a hoot! Lots of odd balls at that event. Plus, all the Spam you could eat and a gourmet Spam cook off (these were all excellent). We had a great time.

I like mine sliced about 1/4" thick and fried in an iron skillet until it's almost BLACK. Serve it up on some honey wheatberry toast with Duke's mayo, lettuce, tomato and a few splashes of smoked Tabasco. DON"T GET MUCH BETTER!!!

Edit: We also keep a case of low salt, low fat, low taste at deer camp (Wal-Mart had it on sale about 10 years ago), just in case nobody gets lucky on opening day of deer season. We may have to rotate our stock.

Reading from a book, I believe "War and Civilization", credited the introduction of spam to the Pacific islands and New Guinea area stopping the local cannibals from doing their thing. Seems it tasted so close to the "real" thing they thought it was.

I grew up on brown beans, cornbread, and fried potatoes three times a week. Toward the end of the week mom would splurge and open a can of spam. That was eatin high right there.

Growing up I was always told the only thing they didn't use off of a pig was the bunghole and the oink. After opening my first can of Spam and hearing the distinctive sound it makes as it slides out of the can I have come to believe I was lied to about the oink getting away!

My dad worked for the railroad, and didn't make a lot. Mom would run the spam through a blender then take it out of the blender and add sweet relish. So every time we went to the beach we had relish and spam spread on our sandwich's. Words cannot describe my memories of the Spam Museum in Austin, MN. Spam bowling shirts are available in the gift shop.

Yep. And quite possibly one of the reasons I learned to cook at a young age!

I love spam, cold or hot, by itself or in something else. I live in the home state of spam. I have a spam hat. I actually have a friend who would take a can of spam to a local cafe so they could make him spam sandwiches when he ate there. Spam, it's whats for dinner (sometimes). I have often wished I had the guts to serve spam like it shows on the can, cloves and all for a major holiday dinner. That would probably solve the relative's "Who's having Christmas dinner next year?" question.
