Went to the store for some cans of beer for a road trip. 12 pack was 12.99 and the 24 was 14.99. Should I have bought 2 of the 12 packs?

Depends.... if it is for after you arrive then go for the 24 pack. If it's for consumption along the way, don't buy it at all.

24 hours in a day 24 cans in a case, not original but it does make sense.

12 divided by 12.99 = 92 cents per beer. 24 divided by 14.99 = $1.66 per beer. So, buying the 12 packs is the obvious choice.

how about this...
buy both the 12 and 24..
you and two buddies split it up as follows..
sell the 12.99 12pack to buddy #1 for 12$
sell a second 12pack to buddy #2 for 12$
keep the third for yourself and drink 25cent a can beer...
i'm here to help...

That depends...

Are you in car A leaving Chicago at 12:33pm or car B leaving Springfield at 1:45pm, and at what rate of speed are you travelling?

Actually, I'm starting to question my theory. If we are talking about cheap beer, he would be better off buying one 12 pack. This will save him money on aspirin and toilet paper.

Back in my drinkin' days this would have been a no-brainer.

I would have picked up 2 of the 24 packs.......

Years ago when I sacked groceries and stocked in a store at home they would have an item .11 cents apiece or 2 for .23 cents and guess what some people would go for. No computers then.
The beer is a no brainer, I'm suprised you would ask.

I don't know if they have it everywhere, but guys around here are wild about a generic beer called "Beer Thirty". It is a generic, low cost beer in, you guessed it, a handy, dandy 30 pack!
Now you don't have to choose.

I'll bet 90% of today's youth couldn't answer that question.

Sadly,
I often notice that young cashiers at stores have very low mental math skills. I guess that comes from always having a calculator or computer handy. I doubt they did the volumes of math problems and recitations of multiplication tables us old geezers did.
I often play mental math at markets, seeking to beat the machine. If it rings up $1.67, I know I'm due 33 cents from two 1s, or $3.33 from a 5.
If the tab is $2.30, I might hand them a 5 and a nickel so that the only coins I get back are quarters. The nickel befuddles them. I always explain that lets me get quarters only back. I get an incredible look, like- "HOW could he know!?!? I just tell them to punch it in, and it will work. They usually show a delighted smile like I did a magic trick.

Another good trick-
The tab is $10.81.
Hand them a 20, a 1, and 6 cents. When they give you "the look", explain that your change will be a 10 and a quarter because you hate ones and small coins. They won't believe you till they see the screen.

If they overpay when making change, you may have to fight to return some.

I used a computer once to figure the best way to buy to buy cheaper beer. 30 years later I'm still trying to figure out the answer.

I agree. One of the few prices I still remember is $3.18 for a 24 of Old Milwaukee. It was that price for at least 3 years of my undergrad tour. If I could get 3.18 I could have a good time that friday and saturday night.

I used to volunteer with my daughter's Girl Scout troop selling barbeque sandwiches at university football games. I had to teach the MOTHERS how to make change without a cash register or calculator. The girls caught on pretty quickly but occasionally I had one or the other of the mothers in the back helping me clean and move stock around because the whole counting thing was pretty hit or miss.

Heh, long ago I asked the lady at the ice house if she'll take Hawaiian money. She said no, only American money.

Also long ago I was selling my 8 track tapes for $3 apiece. My friend was hemming and hawing so I said I tell you what, 3 for $10 how's that? He bought it.

Normally, if I say anything, it is something like "Here's twenty-one and 6". If they ask why the odd amount, I say "so I can get a ten and a quarter".
If you read the screen fast, I'll be a very fast transaction, since you can drag a ten with your right and a quarter with your left, and I'm gone.
I didn't stop to chat with someone I don't know, so my conversation in convenience stores is usually limited to "Thanks".
If that is too wordy, PM me the name and location of your store, and I'll be glad to avoid it if you prefer.

I had a worker in a Customs Broker's office call me one day and ask what the duty on pharmaceuticals was from Puerto Rico. I told her to ask one of her bosses, while I listened on the phone. They had her fill out and submit all of the formal entry paperwork required and present it to me for approval. This took several days for her to fill out and assemble the proper documents. When she (finally) presented the entry I explained to her that Puerto Rico was NOT a foreign country and that products thereof require no entry documents. She learned several important real life lessons:
Listen to people that know more than you.
College did not make you better than everybody else.
College did not have a class in "Common Sense 101".
You are not everybody's daughter. People will treat you like a coworker sometimes.

There was a story during the Atlanta Olympics, Some dude from New Mexico tried to call the Olympic office in Atlanta who sold tickets. He was told he'd have to go through his Embassy as they only sold tickets in the US.

The beer is a no brainer, I'm suprised you would ask.

"Sadly, I often notice that young cashiers at stores have very low mental math skills".

I'm 78 and that description fits me to a 'T".

My local convenience store had two containers of the same brand of beer.......they wanted $8.19 for the 12-pack, or $8.99 for the 18-pack.

The clerk said they were selling more of the 12-packs.

Default Making change

About 1985 I was on a road trip. I stopped for breakfast at a truck stop in central Oregon.

When paying my bill, which was $6 & change, the hostess/cashier took the $10 bill I offered & laid it on the counter.

took 2 $5 bills from her till & laid them on the counter, then put the $10 in her till

she took 5 $1 bills out & returned 1 $5 to the till

she took 4 quarters from her till, placed them on the counter & then returned one $1 bill to the till

she counted the money now on the counter & was satisfied when I confirmed I had given her a $10

She examined the bill & after much study, picked up the $5 & a $1 & moved them to a seperate pile.

after studying the bill again, she moved the quarters around on the counter, finally placing one in her till & taking out 2 dimes & a nickel

another counting, check the bill, return the nickel & bring 5 pennies to the counter.

with a big sigh, she then counted the $6 & change for my bill & presented that to me rather than the remainder

That's when I insisted on seeing the man in charge!

I remember that guy, he stood at the corner of Broad & Market.
I always messed him up by buying 5 pretzels. He wanted $0.60 and I'd give him a 50 cent piece. Telling him I did not want to buy pairs of pretzels I wanted inDUHvidual pretzels at a dime each. I wonder if he ever got it?

A few years back I was buying a new computer at a particular Best Buy where I think they send the employees that were rejected from their other stores. I handed the cashier eight one hundred dollar bills and she called a manager over, handed him the cash and asked "How much is this?" I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
