I was at the range
and the guy in the next stall was producing a lot of smoke. I looked over and he's shooting a cap & ball gun. I looked at his target and they were on the money, deadly accurate. His gun has a pretty long barrel, I would guess 7-8". Interesting piece of history.

Yup! No one ever said those Cap & Ball revolvers were not accurate! I used to shoot Cowboy Action Matches (SASS) with a few Guys that would always use Cap & Ball Revolvers. They won quite often!

My Uberti 1860 Army keeps em in the black all day at 25yds. How can they be so dead on with just a small bead and a notch filed in the hammer. A real joy to shoot. 7 and 8 inch were normal barrel lengths.

There is no choice except to be on the money with blackpowder because it's not practical to reload quickly.

When I started to carry concealed, I was told repeatedly to carry what I shot best. I thought, "Great, now I have to find an IWB holster for my 1858 Remington!" Sounds really uncomfortable while seated.

I have surprised many guys I know that are into the "tactical" end of things when I used to shoot either my Uberti Walker or Pietta 1860 Army. They could not believe how accurate those two guns were out to 25 yards.

The original Colt black powder pistols had sights regulated for 125 yards using full charge loads with round balls. I had an 1861 Navy Colt that was very accurate, and a joy to shoot. Still have a Colt 1851 Navy in new condition, have not fired it, but it, too, should be accurate. The 1861 Navy looked like a scaled down 1860 Army, and was, to my way of thinking, the most elegant of the Colt black powder pistols. It was stolen a number of years ago, I do miss it.

You guys are makeing me want to drag out this old original remington new model army. I havent shot it in around 30 years. It was very accurate as I recall. It was reblued before I bought it and has a old king red insert post front sight and the rear hog wallow was filed square. I also used to own a ruger old army 40 years ago. If I recall I used to use speer ,457 balls in both. I recall on the ruger I had trouble with the lever dropping down some.

The Plains Indians were accurate with their Bows & Arrows too (no sights on them)!

When I lived in california years ago I knew a archery club that challenged a muzzel loading club to a shoot and outshot them!
When you consider how long it takes to reload a single shot muzzel loader maybe a good indian with a bunch of arrows wasnt at as much disadvantage as a mountain man in 1830 as we might think!
