Another conversation heard at Wal Mart. Red State gun sales
I went to Wally Mart to buy some light bulbs, few aisles away from sporting goods.
Some guy was going to by a rifle, when asked where he lived he was of course a Snowbird from Illinois. The clerk pointed to a chart/map and said No, that is a RED State and we can not sell to you. She called manager who confirmed this.
So what is this RED State Map?, Must be a Wal Mart rule???
Of course California is one of the others, I can not remember what other States.
Only thing I can think of is these are States where WalMart will not sell firearms/ammo??

Just as a guess, if the home state has some sort of ban or requirements on rifles they wont sell you one.
In my state we have rules on features, pistol grip, collapsible/ adjustable stock, detachable magazine, flash hider, and bayonet lugs. You cannot have some of these features and the gun would be a felony to have. To play it safe they just wont sell you a gun if you are from one of these places. Its to difficult to know all the laws of every state (at a Walmart level)
I dont think its a bad thing. If you dont know and buy something simple like a M&P15-22 in florida, your a felon with it in CT. You can buy a CT complaint version. The average/ first time buyer might not know of some of these laws and are often surprised when you tell them. Yes, even the 22 rifle can be an "evil assault weapon"
Stupid, yes, playing it safe, sure...

At my Wal-Mart, there is a map on the wall behind the counter.
They way the clerk explained it to me was that Wal-Mart will only sell to buyers from states that share a border with Missouri.
Then again, tomorrow this clerk may be working at the paint counter or ladies lingerie.

Federal law says you can buy a rifle or shotgun from a dealer in any state, AS LONG AS IT IS LEGAL IN BOTH STATES.
For example, I live in Florida and I can buy a rifle in Mississippi. It is legal in Mississippi for someone from out of state to buy a rifle, and it is legal in Florida for me to buy a rifle out of state.
However I could not buy one in California because California does not allow non-residents to buy guns. California also does not allow their residents to buy guns in other states, so somebody from California cannot buy a gun here in Florida. Must be legal in BOTH states.
Apparently Illinois does not allow its residents to buy out of state, or if they do, Florida is not on their "approved" list.
This is not a "Walmart thing". This is a "Federal Gun Law" thing.

As a former Illinois resident..
Illinois requires the purchaser to have a F.O.I.D. card.. Firearms owner identification card. They do not register guns, just the owners. There is also a "waiting period" for rifles, one day, IIRC, and three days for hand guns. You can not posses or purchase ammunition without a FOID.
Glad to be south now. Don't miss the winters either!!
Hope this helps.
