Wink Crime is down, some place

Last Sunday right across the street from the prison I work at there was a double shooting with one dead and one badly wounded, a few months ago a police officer shot himself in the foot by accident with his S&W M&P and just before that in the same spot a man was shot and robbed of 3200 dollars at the same gas station as all the other shootings. ( he was meeting a nice man from craigs list to buy a car at 11 pm).

Now 8 police officers are on desk duty for illeagal cavity searches but crime is down in Milwaukee just not in the neighborhood I work in. I am pretty secure inside the prison and when I leave the parking lot I don't waste much time driving to the highway.

I am hoping Gatorfarmer plans on moving back to Milwaukee soon he can find a lot of material for a new book.

I have a rental house nearby. A good neighbor hood also. But the tenant called me last week, they are moving because the shed in the backyard was robbed. Chain saw & a winch was stolen. Door was locked but they got in thru the large doggie door. Must have been kids. They asked if I had insurance for theft. I told them they had to buy renters insurance themselves. Crime is all over now with the drug problem & unemployment. I'm going to put a sheet of plywood over the doggie door. Change door locks & clean carpets next.

Cavity search? But I already went to the dentist...

I used to live in St. Francis. At the time is was pretty quiet. There was a nice little neighborhood bar that I forget the name of, a Pizza Hut, and a Walgreens, along with the post office within easy walking distance.

At the time the woman I was living with was an assistant district attorney (ADA), though she just handled misdemeanor cases.

Later on, she went insane. I still maintain that I wasn't the proximate cause of that, though my wife thinks I drive people crazy. Shrug. Anyway the ADA tried to slit her wrists with a steak knife, a dull one, which didn't work very well. Apparently her dead mother's ghost told her to, or something like that. She also talked about running off to a nunnery (convent) but hesitated out of a fear that they'd take her teddy bear, Mr. Cheese, away. Shrug. Convents are a rough place like that I guess.

I ended up selling both my prized 7mm-08 Remington Model Seven and my Springfield Armory M1A to fund an unceremonious move back to Lansing.

Just as well, I ought have known there would be trouble. The ADA's favorite place to go was Applebees, and I hate Applebees. As one of my prison pen pals (from lovely Chowchilla in sunny California) observed at the time "the only time I'd have gone near an Applebees was if I was planning to rob the joint". Well said.

I still miss the fact that in Milwaukee you can get a free beer AND a free piece of cake with the dinner special. Greenfield News and Hobby was also great - you could buy toy soldiers, a 12" DML/Dragon soldier and your Fortean Times and gun mags all in one place!

I never did get all my GI Joes, my favorite painting, or my virgin wool Italian overcoat back (those folks in Italy must have trouble leaving the sheep alone...). Thus I stayed in touch on and off with my ex g/f there for a while, listening to her stories about crying alone in her car, trying to entice me to drive there in the middle of the night for bad touching, how she ought to die etc. Being the considerate sort that I was and am, I'd always suggest not using a steak knife but using a gun, and going into the shower, turning the water on and closing the curtain. This contains the mess and is something that the landlord will really appreciate. (I know, I was a slumlord.)

Anyway, she said that St. Francis went down hill as time went on. She blamed an influx of illegal Mexican immigrants, but I have no idea if that was the actual case or just her perception. Apparently there were knifings, and someone was murdered within yards of where I used to live.

I guess the confusing alternate side street parking that was the bane of my stay failed to deter the scoundrels.

It was illegal, a misdemeanor, to carry a concealed handgun in Milwaukee at the time. I had a prelock 337 that was quite light and vanished into a pocket holster, my back up gun from earlier days in Michigan... and Milwaukee was a rough place even then depending on what you were used to. More people were shot and killed annually in Milwaukee alone than in the entire UK and that was if Milwaukee was having a good year. (Deliberately left unsaid is whether I carried said 337 on my person. )

I wasn't overly worried by Milwaukee, finding the positives (in terms of artery clogging edibles) outweighed the crime problems. (And I forgot to mention... free tours of Miller brewery with free beer... and you could take the tour as many times a day as you wanted.) But I was used to living in nigh on apocalyptic conditions in the drug corridor of Lansing anyway, so it was a downright pleasant jaunt.

I think I'm getting old, the snow wouldn't be much fun these days and I'm getting used to the roaches that must be killed with a nine iron. Though... I always did want to investigate the mystery of the Milwaukee kangaroos (kangaroos keep turning up in the area and unlike most mystery animals have been caught dead and alive). There is also the Beast of Bray road to hunt and werewolf hunting might be even better than Sasquatch hunting. One of these days I'll get around to visiting again.

Ed Flynn is always on TV as well as the County Sheriff fighting about funding. After the state park and 4th of July madness it was quiet for awhile. But we have had quite a few killings in Milwaukee. As far as the Kangaroo I recall a man ran one over and called the Sherriff's department and the DNR and they thought he was drunk. When they finally responded he took them to his freezer and showed them the dead roo. No fine no ticket because there is no season on roo's in Wisconsin. I beleive he had it stuffed.

The Beast of Bray road is another matter altogether. When I worked at the old prison we had inmates on work release at Bray road and some of my staff refused to drive there. Some smart Illinois man rented tour buses stocked them with Coors and took the adventerous on a tour in the middle of the night looking for the beast. Called it the Silver Bullet tour. I think he charged $30.00 a person made a bit of money.

Around the prison I did work at there was a woman who kept wild animals had a license to do so she had a wolf, raccoon monkeys and the like. One her monkeys bit the mail man. The husband was hiding his beer in the window well the monkey found it drank a few and decided he didn't like the mail man and bit him.

So don't ever believe Wisconsin is boring.

I would never think of Wisconsin as boring. I live right next door, and go there often, even though it makes me a little uneasy. After all, Wisconsin did give us Ed Gien and Jeffrey Dahmer. On the other hand, Sconny gives us Ellsworth Co-op cheese curds and Spotted Cow, so it all balances out.

I know one thing I always found odd, was that in summer when it really gets hot for an extended amount of time, the low lifes in Milwaukee's inner city seem to shoot each other up. I guess when it gets real hot(95+deg) their tempers get hot. Does this happen in other cities too?
