Default Opinions STI Trojan 9mm??

I have a chance to pick up an STI Trojan 9mm, 1911 platform. It comes w/the box, 3 mags and a set of custom grips (factory STI also included) for $650. I know & trust this guy and his guns are well kept - almost perfect (he said I can test drive it before deciding). Aside from what I read on line I know nothing about STI. My plans are to use this as a range gun. EDC is a M&P 340 or a Ruger LCP.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would jump on it just because of the great price!

Never shot a 9MM STI but have shot the 45 ACP models. Nothing to complain about.

I once had a Sprinfield Loaded 9MM and I'm still kicking myself for selling it. I think you'll have loads of fun shooting the STI.

If you don't like it, you won't have a problem selling it.

STI Trojan frames and slides are made by Armscor in the Phillipines (the Rock Island 1911 folks). They are finished by STI (Strayer-Tripp) using all STI internals. I've not looked at one up close, but I assume they are pretty well made, given the reputation of both companies. I don't think you can go wrong.

According to the STI web site:

"A: The GP series of pistols are built for STI (to STI specifications) by Grand Power in Slovakia. The Spartans are built for STI (to STI specifications) in the Philippines by the STI division of Armscorp. All of the rest of our pistols are built right here in Georgetown, TX."

My daughter lives in Georgetown and she got me a private tour of the plant a couple of years ago. I was very impressed with their operation and quality of their product.

Last year I built a put together 1911 with an STI frame, Wilson barrel and series 70 everything else - it made a great .45.

A friend has a STI in 9mm and I have shot it several times. We both think there are better guns for the same money. I agree with others that for that price you might try it out. Don

Armscor supplies the frames, slides barrels and bushings for the STI Spartan models.

I don't know anyone who has an STI, but just about everything I come across in print (paper and electronic) speaks well of them.

STI40.MOV - YouTube

The above Youtube link shows me shooting a STI Trojan .40. I don't have a video of me shooting my 9mm Trojan but both of my guns shoot great. I paid several hundred dollars less for the Trojans than I did for comperable Colts and Kimbers. I don't feel that I got a lesser gun for the money.

I recently got a Spartan 9mm...so far I'm really happy with it. I paid more than you can get the Trojan for, and the Trojan is a higher-tier model. It would be a no-brainer for me----I'd jump on it!

Thanks to all that responded. I ran about 50 rounds through the gun this morning and to say the least I was impressed. The man now has his money and I'm waiting for my next range visit. As an aside it had been awhile since I'd field stripped and cleaned a 1911. Getting her apart, no problem. Reassembly was a bit more challenging but if memory serves it will get easier with practice.

Thanks again everyone, great Forum!

I havé 2 STI one in 9 mm and the other in 45 acp. I love them both. They are the TargetMaster and Range Master. Very tight. You'll like it.

Guy-
