In my pocket is a Benchmade Osborne 940 folder.

Not in my pocket but one of my favorites that is too nice to carry is a Case Stag Lockback, Clip Blade, Canoe that a good friend gave me in appreciation for some Olympus camera gear that I passed on to him.

I startred carrying a poket knife in the early 60s when I was stationed in Alaska. it was a SAK just like the one on the left. I think they called it the 'Personal". When I was in Vietnam I was riding in a Huey, with my butt about 2 inches off the floor and my knees at eye level. It slipped out of the patch pocket in my jungle fatigues. I went back but couldn't find it. My wife sent me another one; the one on the left. In Vietnam I fixed the Xerox machine so well with it, it took the factory tech-rep two days to get it goign again.

I carried it a long time: the scales cracked and it was sharpened so much the point of the big blade stood up from the frame. I was finally forced to retire it when the red plastic wore to the point the edge of the metal Swiss insignia was exposed; That thing is sharper than the blade! I replaced it with the one in the middle which I still carry today, although when I'm out in the country I carry the larger one.

I'm not really happy with the SAKs, all the ones I've carried had very soft, malleable metal in the blades. However I use the tools a lot more than the blades so that's not so important to me. I've considered a Leatherman but they're a lot bulkier than the SAK.

Bob-

That's really nice of you to mention that little Case Copperlock. The front bolster does look like a Canoe pattern, doesn't it?

I meant for that knife to be carried, but if you think that highly of it, at least fondle it occasionally. The stag in tbe handle is certainly above average.

I sure like that OM-1 and spare lenses. I'm going to mount the long zoom telephoto soon and try to get some decent squirrel photos. I have one nice one taken with a 135mm lens on my other OM-1, and think the 150mm will let me improve on that, and maybe get some duck photos at a small lake near my home.

I think the OM-1 is a superb camera, one of my favorites. Thanks again, and enjoy the knife.

Like bettis1, I like my 940 Benchmade Osborne. I have one, very similar, but bigger.

I must confess I don't "get" all the Swiss Army knife lovers. I've had a few, not real sharp, tools are rudimentary at best, thick, heavy, big bulge in pocket, hard to carry anything else there, and, perhaps best described as "clunky."

I have a multitool in my car, in fact I have two of them, but carrying one on me...no way.

As was mentioned, we carry them for the tools, not the blades. I have a larger one blade knife that is razor sharp for cutting chores. I don't find mine "bulgy" or "clunky". I'm usually the only person around that can open a can or turn a screw in 10 seconds or less. I tend to keep a good tactical flashlight in my car, along with a multi tool. I am a firm believer in the BSA motto: "Be Prepared".

TS,

Thanks for reminding me of the "Copperlock" name. "Canoe" was all I could think of and I knew that wasn't correct.

Your post inspired me to get out several old pocket knives that I used to carry and polish them up. My favorites are the Stockman style that my dad and I both carried when I was growing up on our ranch. The spay blades were well used.

A Gerber LST in my left pants pocket and a Gerber Multitool in a belt pouch when I'm working in the field. Otherwise, the multitool lives in my backpack with a sharpener, a nail clipper and an Omega carabiner. I'm not too partial to Swiss Army Knives.

Swiss Army knives have relatively soft steel, but are easy to sharpen, important for most owners.

Also, I've seen some that some idiot used as a screwdriver that had bent tips that would be broken tips on most knives. I bought a used one and hammered the tip back in place. I'm sure it was stressed, but it was restored, and worked until I gave that knife to someone.

The other tools are very useful, but the cutting blades perform well, too. They won't hold an edge as well as some super steels, but aren't bad. And you can hone one in one of those little hand held devices that sharpen a blade as you pull it through.

The price is right, too. Actually, I paid from $3.00-$7.00 for some that a man was selling at a gun show. Those were confiscated at court houses and he somehow bought three buckets of them in several sizes. I spent a lot of time sorting through them, picking out knives that weren't scratched up. I found some that were virtually new. A few, I still need to polish some scratches off of the blades with Simichrome or Mother's Mag.

But those I bought new were reasonably priced, and the Vic. SOS Kit is fine leather, with really good tools in the side pockets. The compass on the little ruler is a real Recta (Swiss) brand. I keep an SOS kit and its SwissChamp knife in my briefcase.

BTW, the saw on these knives works. I cut a few small branches to see.

I do prefer the Vic. can opener to that on the Wenger brand, but both are better than those on Boy Scout knives.

Always a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) of some kind for the past 30 years. For the past 10 years, I've carried a Swiss Army Electrician that I purchased in Vaduz, Liechtenstein, on August 11, 1998. I put it into service in 2002 to replace a smaller SAK. I wanted to switch to a little larger knife.

It usually two....

I've had a Swiss Army Tinkerer on me in a pocket or back pack since the late 80s.

At one point in the early 2000s I thought I lost it. My wife got me a new one as a gift. The original one turned up when we were packing for a move. I only carry the new one daily anymore, the original is a Tad worn out.

The other is an original Leatherman PST Multi-Tool my wife got me as a gift in 1993. It been on my belt just about every day since. The tip of the blade finally snapped off about two months ago.

I called Leatherman and they will honor the warranty but, since its not in production it would be a newer model or I could try to get it fixed under the "sentimental repair" program if parts were available from other warranty returns. I think I'll give that a try.

I too, carry the dinky Swiss Army Knife. A middle-aged man should never be without a pair of scissors to trim a few wild hairs.

Okay, I guess my life is lived differently than you guys with the Swiss Army Knives. If I need to open a can, I go to the can opener and it seems to work really well. I can't remember a single can that I have wanted to open anywhere except in my house and almost all of those in the kitchen. I even quit carrying my P38 about 10 years after I got out of the Army in '68.

If I need to trim hairs or cut something, I generally pick up a pair of scissors. I have them in the kitchen, garage, my reloading room and in the little hidden compartment of my Pathfinder (along with a multitool, Craftsman needlenose pliers, screwdrivers I'd actually use on my firearm or something else.

I do have one knife with a blade, screwdriver, awl, and can opener, but it lives in my garage with other rarely used tools.

But, if you can stand a knife clipped in your pocket, a SAK in the pocket, change, wallet, gun in pocket holster, speedstrip and other stuff, good for you.

I still don't get the need for the SAK, but, as I said, I probably live differently than you. (Now if I was going on a camping trip in the wilderness with tents and stuff, maybe....).

Bob-

I'm sorry that you don't appreciate SAK's, but you raised a good point: if one has a lot of stuff in his pockets, don't carry a knife there.

Keys, Chapstick, coins, and other stuff tear up a knife handle, scarring it badly. If you carry a pocket gun, wear the SAK in a belt pouch. They sell some (Swiss Army Brands) or various retailers offer good plain Cordura pouches that don't shout "knife" to an observer.

The only thing that goes in my knife pocket is a handkerchief!

I have a Gerstner quarter-sawn oak toolchest full of Kershaw, Benchmade, SOG, Al Mar, Cold Steel, Spyderco, Puma, Buck and others, but it's an SAK that's always in my pocket, regardless of what else may be there.

case lock back with stags made in the 80"s. If you don't have a case in your pocket you might as well leave your pant at home.

Well, maybe I've been a little harsh on SAKs. Here's another of my problems with the ones I've seen besides thickness and bulk.

The screwdrivers, the flat heads, are just general bits and I probably could do as well with a dime. A dime held by a set of needlenose pliers would, I am sure, work better.

If someone made a SAK with a quality set of flat head and phillips bits, I might be interested.

I bought one of those Wilson 1911 screwdriver, and other implements about 15 or so years ago (whenever they came out), but it was worthless for most anything but a 1911 gun.

Other than duct tape, an essential item for most emergencies, quality screwdrivers are the next most essential thing along with pliers and a blade.

Find an SAK with good tools, not general use, not real high quality ones, and I might be a buyer-might even consider carrying it, though it would probably go in my car.

Bob

Bob, you can usually turn Phillips-head screws with the small screwdriver on the Victorinox can opener blade. And a Phillips-head driver is an option on many models.

Not all SAK are thick. The Executive is quite thin, and the screwdriver works on all Phillips-head that I've tried. The large models with pliers also work. Coins are usually too thick on screws.

Granted, a larger set of pliers is better, but I can't carry pliers and the other tools in my pants pocket. The basic Spartan model is amazingly versatile. The Camper, which adds a saw, is the thickest I ever carry in trousers. Thicker SAK go in the briefcase. Carry in a glove compartment may damage the handle pieces in hot weather. Also, DO NOT EVER leave binoculars in a glove compartment. The heat in summer will vaporize the rubber seals and fog the lenses and prisms.

I have a Buck Tool in the glove compartment for tasks requiring larger pliers.

I do have a SAK Tinker in a zipper pouch with maps, a tire pressure tool, flashlight, etc. under the car seat. Summer heat has not been a problem.

I prefer the either the Soldier, Electrician or Pioneer Rancher models.

Spyderco Byrd Wings and a Buck mini trapper.

I used to carry a Victorinox Tinker. I had one, broke the blade on it doing something stupid, then bought another. I sent the broken one to Victorinox 10 years later and they sent me a new one. I have that one in my Racquetball bag.

My daughter and SIL gave me a Buck folding Hunter for Father's Day a couple of years ago. It is always in one pocket or another -- usually right hip, but sometimes in a side pocket of my usual denim jacket if I'm going to be in and out of chairs for a period. Before I came into this knife I had a smaller Buck knockoff that I got just because I needed a knife one day and took what I could find at the local hardware store.

Never had any SAK. Guess I should look into one.

My knife today? A nice Case Camping knife. We are about to run the Easter Egg Hunt at the Church. I'd doubtless need it for the whatnot jobs that come up at such events. Otherwise... my Benchmade Auto-Presidio would be clipped on my pocket.

Somehow, I tend to lose knives clipped to a jeans front pocket, so mostly it's a cheap folder, but there is always a small leatherman in the bottom of a pocket. That gets me by on work days when anything more dangerous looking will get me in trouble.

A Leatherman every day, also, depending on mood/destination, a Case medium stockman with stag grips, or a Kershaw 1560, or a CRKT M-16.

Today I put my CRKT M21-14SFG in my pocket. I won't do that again soon. It's pretty big and heavy, over 5" closed and almost 9 1/2" open.

S&W Border Guard has become a virtual appendage. On my person 99% of the time.

My favorite Swiss Army Knife is the CyberTool. It is in my computer case, not pocket, but I use it nearly daily as well.
