Wood vs Rubber - No contest
I've posted my Mag-na-port custom Charter Arms "Backpacker" before. I got it with the original Pachmayrs and swapped them for a set of the new boot grips that Charter is putting on their snubbies. Now, thanks to forum member slowburninsteve, I have a set of wood grips that fit and feel great. Even in the 21st century, for all of our advancements, nothing compliments steel like wood.

Current production Charter Arms boot grips-
New wood grips-

Now, aren't you ashamed of ever having any thing besides wood on that revolver?

I use whatever suits the role the gun will be used in the best, sometimes it's
wood, other times rubber and have come to see the beauty in functionality.
I do prefer the looks of wood so I feel lucky when that material fill's the bill!

Agreed! No contest! But why does the word "geezer" come to mind every time I see how much better the old school wood grips look?

I totally prefer rubber for shooting. I kept the wood for this 547 but the Hogue Bantams saved my knuckle from the trigger guard. I also have them on 686P 2-1/2" and a 19 2-1/2 inch, and had on a couple model 36s that I owned. Uncle Mikes on my 642. There may be prettier grips but for shooting, I prefer the rubber.

These were the Ahrends on a Model 10-5 I used to own, I just ordered something similar to replace the buggy bumpers on my 649.

I've got rubber on my 3" 65 currently. I haven't found what I want in wood yet.

After quite a few of grip changes, I found that Ahrend's combat finger grooves to be the perfect balance of the look of wood but the shooting comfort of rubber. I never liked the look of rubber grips and never could get used to them on a revolver (I have Hogue's on my SIG P228, and they are perfect for that auto), however, recoil on full .357 loads make you re-think looks vs. utility. I never liked the finger grooved combat grips, but thought they were designed like rubber in configuration, but used wood, of course. They are the most comfortable grips I have ever used on a revolver and in particular, a magnum. I routinely shoot hot magnum(european) Fiocchi loads out of my 619 and I get no bite, no flat spots driving into my palm, great follow up control and they fit my hand as though custom made (of course, it could be very different for others). And to my surprise, they turned out to be fantastic looking, which I didn't think would be the case. I think these are a great compromise of the utility, control and size of rubber grips, with the look and balance of wood. Can't say enough good about Ahrend's, they will always go on my RB S&Ws.
