Default Your fav-o-rite country song

I got them ten forward gears and that Georgia overdrive...Dave Dudley, Six Days on the Road

So, I got to thinkin', my fav-o-rite music is country. Specifically, classic country.

What are some of your favorites?

Mine are:

-Six Days on the Road

-El Paso, Marty Robins

-Johnny Cash

-Hank Williams Sr., Jambalaya/I saw the light

-Nashville (on the AM)

-Conway Twitty

I think we all got a lil' Country in us

Songs by Eddy Arnold are all good

How 'bout Kiss an Angel Good Mornin' by Charlie Pride

or - the Statler's singing "How Great Thou Art"? Knocks me to my knees everytime I hear it.

1. Crazy written by Willie Nelson, sung by Patsy Cline
2. El Paso sung by Marty Robins
3. Lovesick Blues by Hank Sr.
4. Big Iron Marty Robins
5. Leaving' on Your Mind Patsy Cline
6. Picture of Me Without You George Jones
7. Waitin' For a Train Jimmie Rodgers
8. It Don't Hurt Any More Hank Snow
9. New San Antonia Rose Bob Wills Tommy Duncan
10. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry Hank Sr.

I could easily come up with another top-ten list from Johnny Cash, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzell, The Carter Family, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Ernest Tubb, etc. Nothing much after 1970. Very little after 1960. It is a shame they stopped recording Country Music. There are some good songs and good performers, but what they are doing ain't country.

"I've Been Everywhere" and "the Golden Rocket", by Hank Snow...and "Thank God And Greyhound" by Roy Clark.

The Roy Clark song marked the completion of my education in that phase of life. I'm very fond of it, play it now and then for old times sake.

I grew up listenin' to the Sons of the Pioneers and around so many men that were described in this song, that it and those old bunkies are forever imprinted in my mind and heart.

You have to have growed up on the desolate prairies of Wyoming to understand the call of the mountains like the Tetons and Davy Jackson's hole.

I'm originally from Nashville, so it's hard to come up with an all-time favorite. A short list of things not mentioned yet:
  • Orange Blossom Special - Charlie Daniels and Papa John Creech (Jefferson Airplane), at the Exit Inn on Elliston Place, 1972. 20 minute breakdown.
  • Will the Circle be Unbroken - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and others.
  • Wildwood Flower - A.P. Carter and the Carter Family.
  • Foggy Mountain Breakdown - Lester Flat, Earl Scruggs.
  • Uncle Pen - Bill Monroe.
  • The Ride - David Allen Coe.
  • When You Say Nothing At All - Keith Whitley, Allison Krause.
  • Fire on the Mountain - Marshall Tucker Band.
  • Long Black Veil - The Chieftains with Mick Jagger. Go listen!

Just a few,

Buck

I like Rock, Country and Gospel, which of course means I'm a huge Elvis fan. He did a bunch of good ones in all three categories.
Others I'm partial to:
El Paso by Marty Robbins
Pancho and Lefty by Willie and Waylon
Note: the above two were ones I sang to my three kids thousands of times to put 'em to sleep.
Blue Side of the Grey by Atlanta-(Check that one out on Youtube, it'll make you cry)
Bed of Roses by The Statler Brothers
Almost anything by The Oak Ridge Boys
A Simple Man by Charlie Daniels
The Gambler by Kenny Rogers
Sink the Bismarck by Johnny Horton
Ghost Riders in the Sky by Johnny Cash
Lots more will probably come to me later, but these will do for now.
Jim

I could easily come up with another top-ten list from Johnny Cash, Ferlin Husky, Lefty Frizzell, The Carter Family, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, Ernest Tubb, etc. Nothing much after 1970. Very little after 1960. It is a shame they stopped recording Country Music. There are some good songs and good performers, but what they are doing ain't country.
Great list, and I couldn't agree more about your comments on today's "country music." In reality, it is nothing more than this era's pop rock music. The music industry's insistence on calling it country music is a travesty to real country music. It's all about market demos, and the new country music is the pop music alternative to urban rap music. I call the new stuff "red neck rock..." To make things even more strange, you still see some more traditional country music artists lumped into the mix; kind of a mess really...

My father was a big country music fan, grew up raising horses, etc. so I appreciate the old time country guys, many of them listed in posts above. I like all sorts of music, but something relaxing about listening to that simple old-time country music (30's, 40's, and in to the early 50's). Hank Williams Sr. came along at the tail end of that era (or, did he start the new era...?), and I like him a lot. Don't care much for Hank Jr. Hank the III is interesting... Marty Robbins had an incredible voice.

When I was young, I really liked Johnny Cash, Willie, Don Williams, Merle Haggard, and Waylon Jennings. Saw some of them in concert when I was young, and actually met Willie at a Farm Aid concert several years ago (nice guy...).

I suppose the cool thing about music is that there's something for everyone...

I also really like Ian Tyson; he covers the Northern Range beautifully. A guy back in the 60s going by the name of Johnny Western wrote up the original "Have Gun, Will Travel" theme music. In his prime he had a great voice. His rendition of "The Searchers" theme song and "Rolling Dust" will put chills up your spine...
