When I was about 19, I passed on a smoking deal on a '69 Z-28 with just about every option they had, including, as I recall, the rare folding rear seat. It was in great condition, but my buddies and I turned up our noses at it because, hey, it was only "stock." I'm still kicking myself.

I was/am a country bumkin so I didn't want or need anything with speed. My Holly carb was a on 67 International Scout top speed without having to stop at every gas station was about 45 MPH. That thing could climb a tree though. This old scout 304 V8 had a whine that I will never forget.
I remember one time this kid from Iowa IIRC kept teasing me and giving me grief about my old scout, he had a big foot want to be type truck. I waited until there were several of us guys together and right on que he started given me grief. I challenged him to a hill climb and of course he couldn't get out of it as he had a big mouth. He took off made it about half way up lost traction and had to back down. I went up the hill turned around and came back down. Stopped in front of him with all the guys around and said maybe next time I might even put in 4 wheel drive. That put an end to his bragging about his truck.

I do not doubt that story at all. I have a fair amount of 4x4 driving experience, and I have had 2 buddies that had International Scouts, and I went deep into Mexico once in an International 4x4 Travelall.
Those Internationals will go places, that a helicopter could not fly a 2 wheel drive pickup truck over...

The old cars definitely have more character, but these days the base drive train on the $20k stripped minivan I took for a test-drive has 283hp and a 6 speed tranny.
In general, carbs can give fuel efficiency or performance given the conditions they were set-up for. FI can do both under any conditions, but its not just fuel injection doing that, there is ignition mapping, the ability to rev higher, down stream engine monitoring, and a million other things to break. That is one reason I like my Corvair, there is just so little to go wrong with it.

I remember flipping the air cleaner cover over on my mom's 455 '73 Pontiac Grand Prix to expose the element so we could hear the howl when the secondaries opened up.
Eventually I had wheels of my own, but not too many photos have survived the last 30+ years. Here's my '67 Plymouth GTX, these were taken in '79 I think - 440 "Super Commando", 750 Holley, headers, glass packs dumping at the rear axle, music to my ears!

Is there any way I can sue my deceased parents? My hot rodding consisted of straping a small stovepipe on the back fender of my bike, shoveing newspaper in it and lighting it. Then pedaling it through the village so the other kids could marvel!

I like everyone else I knew wanted the biggest carb I could afford to bolt on.
However years later I read a article in a car mag quoting Carrol Shelby where he said ("I could have made the Mustang Cobra run smoother, burn less gas and maybe produce a bit more HP. With a smaller carb. But everyone wanted the biggest it could handle, so thats what I gave 'em".

The first time I was stationed in San Diego (1975) I picked up a 1966 El Camino that I powered with a Chevy 427 L88 engine out of a drag boat. Sitting on top of the manifold was a 1030cfm 3 barrel Holley. It worked fine, but the high rise with 2 750's worked better!
Man that thing could eat the gas like nothing else. When you are young and dumb you just have to hear those secondaries all the time!
I eventually sold the engine out of it and went back to a much milder 327, but still fast enough.

That's true. Street cars are typically way over-carbed. When you consider that today a Sprint Cup car can make 850+ horsepower with only 830 cfm, or, even more impressive, the Truck series make 650 hp with only 390 cfm, you quickly realize there's no way a street engine making only 300-400 horsepower really needs anywhere near 1000, 850 or even 750 cfm. Everybody wanted to bolt on a 750 double pumper (or, even better, two of them!) and look like a race car back in the day, though. Who cares if it actually killed performance somewhat, it looked and sounded cool.

They didn't quite sound right until they got squirted up the tailpipe with the garden hose.
I used to purposely drive through crowded parking lots and romp on my 86 Mustang to see how many car alarms I could set off.
The kids thought it was funny for a while. Then it just embarrassed them.
