Default What's the best color wood for a stainless revolver grips?

OK "stocks"
I now it's personal preference but I like most all of them. For a M 66.?

I do like darker woods so could just go with CocoBolo

The Silver Black Dymondwood might be nice but that is a laminate.

I'll guess elephant ivory. It looks great just about everywhere. At least to the folks "in-the-know". Who really cares what everyone else thinks?

Easy question with an even easier answer-whichever color YOU like best.
Thank you-Thank you very much!

As far as grip material-may I suggest a Walrus Baculum? Elephant Ivory is so "rburg"

Someone posted some pics of a M64 with what almost looked like black stocks, possibly Altamonts. I like dark wood on stainless guns, ymmv.

I have a reddish color wraparound grips (not sure of the wood) on my stainless Commander and I think it looks excellent. Someone else mentioned cocobolo and with the right grain or checkering, it looks good on anything, blued or stainless.

I am partial to ivory, but for wood I like Gabon Ebony. One of my Randall knives has a Gabon Ebony handle, and it looks real good.

GOODYEARS!!!!! Ok, ok, stop throwing things! I like contrast, so dark wood like cocobolo, walnut, ebony, etc. The other alternative is elk or stag, both are fantastic on shiney guns!

I have a Gemini 640 but it has rubbers (Pachs) on it. It certainly would look better with wood but not pleasant to shoot.

My 66-3 lew horton came with these. I never have liked light colored wood on any finish gun. But it all depends on what you personaly like. I have never ever bought a gun or anything else geared to what someone else likes. I buy stuff for me! I never have been accused of being a fashion statement!

I have Ahrends on my 66 snub in Paduak. It works for me, but I can see where others wouldn't like it. Don't have a picture, but can put one up if necessary.

I've got some Grashorn CO elk stags, no bark or medallions on my 65... but I'm thinking I need some black Altamonts on my 64-5!

Why do stocks and grips always have to be some exotic ****?

Why not a Tiger or Bird's Eye Maple? How about Black Ash? There are local shrubs that get big enough for grips that have a really interesting look to them too. I'm tired of the same-old same-old, especially when it comes to "custom" work. There are so many species out there, diversify a bit!

I dont know what kind of wood that is. The gun is one of three hundred. I only seen one more and it had the same grips but with a ivory diamound inset. The strange part is the paper I got with the gun says it comes with uncle mike grips?

I'm probably a party of one here, but I like the darker, walnut-colored wood on the blued revolvers, and the medium or lighter, maple-colored on nickel finish. I've switched around grips on my various revolvers just to see what looks best to me. (Don't worry, none of them were "numbered" to the guns. I only LOOK stupid.)

But Caje is right - what ever YOU like best is the final answer.

I prefer a medium.
But you may prefer light or dark. It's your gun.
I can show you a few ideas.
Grips on the 638 and 4006 were purchased from members on this site. So be sure to check here.

I know I have a non Smith, sorry.
I also have a stainless sans wood. I just like the ones that were on it.

I use a little bit of everything but nice walnut is hard to beat. Going to make a pair out of Box Elder Burl this week for one of my N frame smiths.

Ya get around too, eh?

Ditto walnut (lighter English for SS) but I have a custom Ruger with lacewood grips that look pretty darn nice, not too dark and not too light. I do not like light colored grips on a SS gun. I'd post picture but can't from here.

Always wondered why Hogue didn't offer Ebony in their hardwood MonoGrip. I've heard ebony is too naturally oily and doesn't glue well. I think it would look smashing on a stainless revolver.

There's an older lady that sets up at the Tulsa show every year that has a multitude of grips/stocks. I like to buy from her so I can pick through several different colors and grain patterns until I see the ones that I like. Here are a couple, the first is a 65 with Hogues and the next is a 63 with Badgers.

Thanks for all the great pictures. Gives me lots of choices!

Now for the next questions, what size grip? See new thread.

IMO, grips/stocks should contrast the rest of the gun. So they should be darker.

Here is a set of Kurac grips on my 686.

Roy, there's a nice assortment to look at in this post, from ivory to rosewood to ebony.

Altamont grips. Threads gone when you...

It doesn't have to be real dark wood to look nice on a stainless gun. Pau Ferro by Hogue.

I have a pair of stainless Ruger Blackhawks I use for CAS with white micarta grips. I like the look. It is also a good bit more durable than other 'white' stocks.

S&Ws just seem to look right with factory cocobolo though.
