volunteer tomatos
I have several volunteer tomato plants coming up will they produce fruit or should I get rid of them and start new plants?

I have that happen on occasion and they produce just fine.

What did they volunteer for? Sounds like pretty stupid tomato plants.

They come up frequently in chicken and rabbit manure. I transplant them and put them where I want them and they do fine. A few plants I don't have to pay for.

Volunteer tomato plants
My father was frugal to say the least and he would get the "dried sludge" from the sewage treatment plant and use that for fertilizer. He saw how well it worked in Japan..
Besides the big white rubber bands that were present, there were always volunteer tomato plants and they were always cherry tomatoes. Apparently they have the hardiest seeds to make it all the way through the GI tract and still sprout.

They will produce but are much more suseptible to introducing disease to the rest of your plants. They may not carry the same strain if bred to be like a "Beefeater" for example. They will be OK if none of these are a concern for you. Commercial growers would not want any volunteers near any of their gardens.
