Default 22LR

Been looking at some 22LR and found a few, but am interested in S&W Model 22A or a Ruger Mark 1 and 3. The 22A is around 250.00 and the Rugers range from 300.00- 350.00. I have a Sigma but would like something that is cheaper on ammo. Any comments / suggestions would be appreciated.

Around here, new Ruger Mark IIIs can be had for as little as $264 at Mills Fleet Farm. The lowest price is on a 22/45 with a bull barrel. The plain jane model with fixed sights is $289. Seems like a mistake in pricing to me, but there you are. The prices are the same in the two stores closest to me, one in Minnesota and one in Wisconsin. That is about as nice and cheap a gun for plinking as you will find.

My favorite all time .22 is my Ruger Mark II bull barrel. That gun shoots way better than I.

One that I have heard positive remarks here and other places is the Browning Buckmark.

No experience, just what I read.

The Ruger will far outlast the 22A. Look for a good used Mark II and you can hand it down when the time comes.

I agree with all the rest, the Ruger id the better of these two.

If I was only going to own one .22 LR semi-auto pistol it would be a bull barrel Ruger Mark II. The Mark III is a good gun, but the magazine disconnect messes with the trigger pull and the stupid loaded chamber indicator must be kept scrupulously clean, otherwise it will cause feeding issues. Runner-up status to the Browning Buckmark which has a better factory trigger but isn't built like a tank like the Ruger.

Well I found a used mark II...comes with a case, all the paper work, plus a laser grip. No bull barrel tho...they will knock 30.00 dollars off. Which means it will be...wait for it...399.00. Seems awful high to me.

Seems awful high to me, too.

I don't know nothin' about the Smith, but would not touch a Mark III. I despise guns with magazine disconnects. I've got a Mark I and a Mark II. Truthfully, I like the I better, but that might be because I learned on it. I'm used to using the safety to lock the slide back, and don't have a problem with only 9 rounds in the magazine.

300 dollars seems high for a used Ruger, to me, but then, gun prices have been going crazy for the last few years.

The Ruger MK I & II's have been going high lately as people have realized how good they are. I am not suprised with the price you posted of $399, because it has lasergrips on it, most likely Crimson Trace, and they are very expensive in themselves. Where this is a S&W forum, I'd also recommend some earlier S&W's, although harder to find, the 422, 622, 2206, 2213, & 2214.

"em boys at "get her done" mountain must think nobody looks around when buying a gun. One time I asked what is the lowest you'd take for that gun? "thats it right there, corporate sets the prices". needless to say, that guns still there.

I did some checking and found a Mark II for 350.00 no case, no owners manual and of course no laser grip. I checked online for a price on the laser grip and it is 239.00. So, maybe 399.00 isnt such a bad price. (yes its a Grimson) I asked if they would take some off..he him hawed around and said he needed to talk to his boss. He came back and said it was set at that price because of the laser grip. Once I was about to walk he said he would go to 399.00. I told him I needed to check with my buddies at S&W forum and would get back to him...Seriously tho, I think I am going to go back and buy it. The gun is in excellent condition.

I didn't catch the "laser grip" in your first post. Yeah, with one of them, that price ain't bad. IF, and that's a big if, you want the laser grip.

Yes, if you paid 250 for a gun, and then had to pay another 250 for a laser grip, then you have 500 in it, and you could have bought that one for 4. But if you don't want the laser grip, then you are spending 400 for a 250 gun.

I put one on my Mark II. I play with it, every once in a while, but basically it was an expensive toy. I would not buy another one. It seemed like a really neat idea. Until I got it.

Salesperson said with used guns there is a 60 day period that I can return it if I dont like it. So I wont be out anything, if I dont like it. Which is a plus

I owned a 22A and it was a very accurate gun with a trigger that was less than adequate for my taste. Looked at what it would take for a trigger job and it appeared all the internals were riveted instead of pinned. Put it back together and gave it to my son. I own a MarkIII Hunter and it is a tack driver.
